Claudine | 163 comments What would you get?

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments ... only one? *greedy*

How about a nice leather-bound copy of Lord of The Rings. :)

message 3: by Claudine (new)

Claudine | 163 comments Ok, more than one then! :).

message 4: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I want the Parasol Protectorate Omnibus, but sadly even Amazon doesn't sell it directly.

message 6: by Claudine (new)

Claudine | 163 comments Ah, I was expecting something along the lines of Harry Potter from you Lu. You know, I've not read the series yet. I have the first two printed copies here. Maybe I should just get off my butt and read those.

I think you should! Get past the first 3 and you will be hooked :)

message 8: by Claudine (new)

Claudine | 163 comments Are they that bad? :D The only thing I know about the books (besides the movies) is that my mother inlaw's cousin (who is a lay preacher) detests books like that. In fact, after the first few were printed and the first movie was made, she launched into a rant that would have done that wacko preacher of the Westboro Baptist Church in the US proud, the one who protests at soldier funerals.

Oh no not bad at all! I love them!
They are just younger than the rest, and for first time readers they might seem too young.

But that is also part of the charm, because while you're reading and Harry is growing up the style of the books also matures. I think the style of the last book wouldn't have fit the first book and vice versa.

I want it!
I've got the little blue one...

Harry Potter is one of those gems that transport you to another world. I read the books before seeing the movies and in my mind I created the whole Harry Potter World. When I watched the movies it was like everything just coming alive. They also helped me start to read again. I agree with Barbara, Harry and the style of the books mature more with each book, and that's just how it should be. It would have sucked if JK had written the first book as she did the last.

message 13: by Claudine (new)

Claudine | 163 comments That's certainly true. Still haven't bought any of them. It's good to know she lets Harry mature along the way, that's real growth of characters then.

I have so many on my wishlist now I have no idea which to get and which not to get. Sigh.

I'd buy this one: Lord of the Rings or this one.

Ooooooooh Pretty!!!!!

message 17: by Claudine (new)

Claudine | 163 comments Very pretty indeed. I have so many copies though. Granted none of them look like those.

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
Well at that price you wouldn't actually dare to read it. Just look at it. I see over here it goes for something like R1700.

message 19: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Very pretty, although I'm not nearly enough of a fan to even re-read the series, let alone spend that kind of money on it!

Yeah, well it's a hypothetical situation. I'd never really buy anything like that, but boy would it be nice to look at.

message 21: by Claudine (new)

Claudine | 163 comments I've just introduced my two kids to the movies. When they are old enough to understand the things in the books, they can read the many copies I have of them.

R1700!!!! Ja ok well um...no! Can't justify spending that much money on a book. I need it for my next tattoo.

I'd mount it in a glass case and keep mumbling my precious my precious.

If you want to read a truly interesting book about the Karoo, then you can't do better than look for 'The Plains of Camdeboo' by Eve Palmer. If you find on ebook sites, let me know. You can't do better as a South African reader wanting to know more about this intriguing and ancient desert. Delightful writing and fascinating reading.
