I recently read It was inspired by The Scarlet Letter and features a world where "criminals" (in quotations because the crimes of which one can be convicted include things like abortion) are not imprisoned, but have their skin dyed a color based on their crime.
Has anyone else read books that were inspired by, or are re-tellings of, a classic?
There is The Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys which is the story of the first Mrs Rochester (Jane Eyre). On a lighter note, "Bridget Jones Diary" is an amusing modern version of Pride and Prejudice, although unlike the original, I could never figure out what Mark Darcy saw in Bridget Jones.
