ABANDONED. Two guys meet running track, wealthy one goes to live in woods, other leads normal life while watching friends downfall

I don't remember much- I read it in 2009 and it wasn't written long before that. It was fiction, told in the first person from a normal guy who meets a rich kid while running (track I think). They become close friends, the rich boy is very contemplative and philosophical...he ends up going to live in a cave in the woods while the other boy leads a normal life, visits from time to time, brings food, and witnesses his friend drift further and further from reality. The guy in the woods ends up dying- found face down near his fire pit.

That's all I remember. I really REALLY liked this book and I need to know the Title/Author so I can read it again. I read it while I was on a medical mission in Guatemala, and was nearly finished with it when I was robbed at gunpoint...they took my bookbag and that was the last I saw of the book! THANK YOU TO ANYONE WHO IS ABLE TO HELP!
