Am I the only one who would like the podcast as a video podcast? Also would like to watch live! I know it would not add much substance, but "watching" Tom and Veronica interact would be enjoyable.

Actually, on this week's show, I thought it was a bit too distracted/inside baseball at the beginning. The type of discussion up front is why I stopped listening to TWiT (TWiT became a 2 hour inside baseball laugh at stuff that isn't funny fest that included maybe 20 minutes of tech talk). Thankfully, once Tom and Veronica settled in and started talking about books, the show got back to its normally excellent form.
I have no objection to a video podcast but most of the time I listen while I'm doing other things so I'd probably not see most of the video even if T & V went that direction.

If it ever went all-video, I might stop downloading (not saying there's any plan to do so...just noting).

Not sure I follow on how it would hurt the audio experience.
Nick wrote: "Not sure I follow on how it would hurt the audio experience."I (and this is totally personal) can't stand it when people laugh at jokes they've made that aren't funny. A lot of talk radio people do this and it drives me nuts.
My experience with podcasts that record in video and provide audio is that they end up doing a lot of jokes/comments that relate to something that is visible if you're watching. But if you're just listening, it just sounds...well, to me, irritating. I do think people get distracted with the video aspect of it and they end up talking less about the subject matter of the actual podcast.
As usual, this is just my opinion and experience. For me it's a pet peeve and is why I stopped subscribing to many podcasts. But a lot of people like it...they must, else these things wouldn't continue.
I'm a major film buff, as well as a major audio listener, and a major book reader (more in the past). When I'm watching a movie, my visual takes over my auditory. I look at the cinematography, the nuances in the scenes, the actor's subtle body movements. The most important thing about the sound is the music and sound effects that contribute to the visual. I do listen to what the actors are saying, but it's secondary to the visual that goes with it. If what they say is important, then it sticks. Otherwise, the sound supports the visual, for me. I gotta add that. For me. LOL
I'd stick to the audio version if there was a choice.
A two way Video skype makes for a boring visual experience.
Plus the technical issues are not worth it for no added value.
If it was a full production studio podcast with regular guests, I could be tempted.

That is annoying. I listen to a lot of podcasts as a way to fill in long boring 12 hour night shifts.
I prefer podcasts that are audio only for the reasons you mention.
I miss a lot of what TWiT and other Tech podcasts are joking about/referencing because they are video as well.

Video makes sense for a how-to podcast like Tekzilla, but when it's just people sitting around chatting it adds nothing and, worse, can detract from the audio version when the hosts start playing to the camera. I want podcasts I can listen to while doing other stuff, and video podcasts don't allow that.
I say stick with audio only, since I listen to my podcasts when I'm out and about, so it's not convenient for me to be looking at my phone when I'm listening. I am really getting sick of podcasts that gone video spending long stretches on stuff that doesn't make any sense if you can't see what the hosts are looking at.
I would only vote for video if Tom and Veronica put on appropriate costumes :) Now someone will suggest Veronica should don the obligatory chainmail bikini.. but not me. Ooopppps what am I saying :) I will leave it up to the ladies to vote for what Tom should wear. But seriously, I agree with most of the people here that listening to only the audio of a video podcast can be a bit annoying. So I vote for audio only.
I don't care, as long as they keep coming. For me, whether I get the audio or video depends on the subject matter. I'll listen to pretty much anything, and that's how I consume most of my podcasts. Even if I get the video podcast, like TNT or Tekzilla, I'll listen and not watch for much of the podcast. Where the media under discussion is primarily visual, a video podcast works better, like Framerate or Game On. Then there is something like the NSFWshow, where it really is best consumed with video, live, while in chat with at least a half dozen windows open, but that show is as much interactive performance art as a podcast.
Like so many else around here, I listen to the podcast while doing something else, mainly while at work and not on the computer. So I can't see a video, while the audio version goes along in my mp3-player nicely. So the video wouldn't add anything for me, and I prefer the audio only podcasts.
I don't like the idea of full eps in video, but some kind of spin off in short 5 min videos might be cool. Things like interviews would be awesome in video (google hangout or something like that)

Even though Video is coming, I prefer audio. I had to give up on some TWIT podcasts because I feel left out (Net@Night, now The Social Hour, is a TV show.) Tom is particularly good about remembering the listeners (Frame Rate works except for the intro) but other shows are too video-centric. It is no fun listening to people laugh and comment about something mysterious they are watching.I always intend to catch the video shows but it takes more time to watch. I listen at work. I can't pretend I'm working while watching TV!
If there was a video podcast a la TWiT network stuff I would probably never download it. If the audio version started devolving as much as the TWiT ones do, I'd stop downloading that too. I'd stay a part of the forum here but give up on the podcast. I've done that with a few podcasts in recent years.

A podcast I can listen to while doing other things, a video takes all my attention and I cannot do it at work :(

And there went 30 minutes or so down a beautiful rat hole. Thanks for posting that link to Anne's ukulele videos. She plays quite nicely.
Definitely not video. I have seen other podcasts disappear from my ipod because they went the video route. I tend to listen to while I am jogging, at the gym or doing housework. Video kills that.
I would prefer video podcasts be limited to special episodes like live recordings. I listen on my way to work.
Audio. I listen on my way to work as well. In addition, memory space is starting to be an issue on my iPhone
I'm of a mixed opinion. I really appreciate that Sword and Lase. As a fan, it really meant something watching Veronica's jaw hit the floor on game on 2 weeks ago. It works fine as an audio podcast, and part of the charms is that they produce it on their days off, wine in hand, with their feet up.
On the video side of things I'm half expecting Tom and Veronica to do a episode from the Twit Brick House out of sheer convenience at some point. I think it would end up being a bit over produced if that happened though.
However if Veronica is in the chainmail bikini I want to see Tom in an equally revealing leather mad max outfit.
Joshua - Just curious: were you going for "convenience" there, or "connivance"? Slightly different shades of intent!
*cough... quickly edits post to remove all evidence of embarrassing lifelong reliance on spellcheck... cough*I meant convenience.
I would watch the podcast if it were for a special reason like being recorded live from a con or a winery. Sometimes visuals like screenshots of games mentioned, book jackets or fan art of characters may help.
Heather wrote: "I would watch the podcast if it were for a special reason like being recorded live from a con or a winery. "Live from a winery, I like that idea. Perhaps Tom and Veronica can play the GRRM drinking game, every time his name or something connected to him comes up they have to take a drink :)
I'll put my 2 cents in (even though it's a dead currency here now) and echo terpkristin in that a video podcast is of limited value to me. I really don't watch many (video) podcasts with any regularity and see limited value add for a bookclub podcast (as I enjoy it).I also agree with the assertion that some of the podcasters and podcasts in certain 'clicks' have become filled with too much inside baseball/jokes and that I really hope S&L keeps focus. Time will tell.
Joshua wrote: "However if Veronica is in the chainmail bikini I want to see Tom in an equally revealing leather mad max outfit."Do an image search for Tom, and you can see him as a shirtless Dothraki horse lord ... or a photoshop of his head on Harry Potter in an Equus poster if you are more literal minded.

Sorry you feel that way, good thing we still have an audio show as well.

I think its awesome to have a video show. I can only imagine the much work you two have now. Audio and video version of the same show. Me? I am looking forward to both versions. Thanks.
So, while I agree that video adds little to nothing to podcasts and most of the time they are actually hindered by it, I am stoked about this show. Tom and Veronica have both said this will be IN ADDITION to the audio podcast so I don't see why there is so much animosity. It's EXTRA content. If you don't have time for it, that stinks. But they shouldn't pass up a great opportunity to bring Sword and Laser to the masses because it doesn't fit the way that some people consume their content.
We're all nerds here. We don't want to be that guy at the record store who can't listen to any band anyone else has heard of. Besides We are missing out on some major sexy. I am all for anything that gets my eyeballs a chance for some more Tom.
And if you're worried about the success going to their head, I think you can rest easy. If it hasn't gone to their head yet, I think we're safe. ;)
