I wholeheartedly agree with Rebecca that Jane Eyre indeed was one of the strongest women characters I have read of.

Carol Dobson | 2738 comments I was surprised to see many of the books on the Penguin Classics list. It seems unlikely that many people would read them. I suspect that many are on study courses and sell for that reason. There seem to be a lot of 19th century Russian authors- Gogol, Dostoyevsky etc. but nothing a bit later. I don't think anyone would pick up The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer for a read- however, many students of it obviously do. Was surprised to see Lady Chatterley's Lover by DH Lawrence there. It is definitely not one of his best. Most of the books appear to be European, although I noticed Nehru's The Discovery of India.
