Olivia (deer50) | 35 comments I don't remember If he did the crime or not. Setting was somewhere back in the 1960s-70s? He was african american and was called a "pig" in the court room.
His mother came and visited in the jail and tried to get him to eat food. He wouldn't eat it because he felt to was pointless, he was going to be executed anyway. Someone comes to the jail and tries to give him hope. Says something about he has to be a symbol to everyone. And he'll die a hero. or something like that...

HeavyReader | 450 comments Could it be A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines?

Your description is very familiar to me, but it has been many years since I have read any of the books written by Ernest Gaines.

HeavyReader | 450 comments Ernest Gaines also wrote A Gathering of Old Men, which has a similar theme of an African American man being accused of a crime. I can't remember if he ever made it to court or not. You might want to check this one out if A Lesson Before Dying is not what you were thinking of.

HeavyReader | 450 comments Near the title of the thread, there should be a link that says "edit." Once you click that, you should be taken to a page with a drop down menu of folders for this group. Use that to find the right folder, probably "solved-fiction" or something along those lines. Be sure to save.

If you look on the right side of this page, you will see a link for "bookshelf" (under "group home" and above "discussions"). If you click on that link, it will take you where you need to go to add your book to the shelf. Make sure you get the appropriate shelf, not sure what all the options are.

Let me know if you need help. I hope my directions are ok.

cheers!
