This Is Not The Michael You're Looking For

It doesn't always work because the pages are not direct translations, but rather information about the same topic in the alternate language, but in some cases it can be really useful and if you're going to fight with language editions its not a bad place to start.

Thanks Michael! I've managed to sort out most of Tamora Pierce's books now, but am left with a list where I wonder if she's really the author, or if we're talking about some other Tamora Pierce:Airborne
Elkhound
Deciphering Learning Domai CB
Extra/ordinary Objects 1
Klinische Pathophysiologie
Praktikum der Hundeklinik
Vegetarische Küche
Especially the last three, as they ONLY show up in German.
Can anybody help here?
Rivka, you added the author "a" to the master "Help please" list, but there's another one mixed up with it: the author N.
Rivka, this is in reference to the "authors who are actually publishers" thread. The name of the "Disney" publisher that you linked in the thread has been changed to "tk." Is this intentional, or was it a mistake? I was hesitant to change it back in case it was done on purpose.
Ok, I'm dumb, I can't figure this one out. I found this book:http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18...
over at the Library of Congress website:
http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebre...
It says "Intro by, designed by, compiled by, edited by and conceived by" different people. Which of those people is the author? I'm thinking it's the one who "conceived and designed" it.
I would put the one who "conceived and designed" it in author slot #1, "compiled and edited" in slot #2, and that entire description in the description box.
The compiler and editor should go in Author1 while the designer in author2. As the editor actually worked on the book itself rather than simply conceiving of it.As for the Michigan reprint series. Try using Worldcat.org Type isbn: and the details should come up. Worldcat is a great resource.
There are only a few left, but I couldn't figure out the rest of the books by author Xxxxx.Edit: There's also one book each by authors XXXXXX, XXXXXXX, XXXXXXXX, XXXXXXXXXXXX, and XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Jane Austen seems to have something strange going on. All of the novels have about 200-300 editions each, most not combined. While it is possible that they are all unique, it seems somewhat improbable. Is there any easy way to check, or does someone have to look at every single book?
That's perfectly reasonable for such published books. Of the 470+ editions of Pride & Prejudice, only about 15 lacked an ISBN, and a couple of those were legitimate anyway -- bookclub editions, alternate covers, etc. I deleted the others.
does someone have to look at every single book?
Yep.
does someone have to look at every single book?
Yep.
Could it be? Is the Michigan Reprint series... done?Well, no; there are still 9 books there, but a cursory glance through Google and WorldCat turns up nothing. Hooray!
Michigan Reprint Series...not any more! I was inspired by only having 9 left (there will still well over a hundred last time I looked) and finished them off :-)
Roberts is mostly done; there are a few left I can't dig up, because it's a beautiful day and I'd much rather be outside than still at work. So my focus is, admittedly, a little distracted. However, Nora Roberts could use some help from someone more patient than I.
Don't claim impossible (the challenge is too tempting).
*makes note*
Ok, looks like the ones that are left are: Martin (66), King (28), Wright (20), Stewart (21), Moore (32), Brown (31), Jones (27).
That should keep y'all busy while I finish Pesach (Passover) preparations and celebrate the first few (computer-free) days.
Have fun! ;D

Rivka, Have a good Pesach. (I found some organic Kosher for Passover whole wheat matzos. The only ingredients are whole wheat flour & water. Yay!)*makes note* Rivka: ☺
Michael, You're amazing. (I get discouraged much more easily!)
John White http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...This seems like a case of "one of these things is not like another" - Christian fiction and self help, and gambling tips, tree ID guides, and jazz crit. Anyone up for some deeper exploration?
I kind of like the idea of a Christian writer giving out racing tips. Just in time for the Derby! And here is another author with a similar (although not as amusing) problem: David Moore
I got one of the Kings - the one about Maryland basketball, but it is still showing up under the general King listing. Will this clear out eventually?
Yes, it usually takes a little while for books to drop out of an author list after a name change. If you go to the "Show all books by this author" it won't show up there, nor will it show up on the combine editions page.
Gary Ezzo is a fun one. He wrote some Babywise books. Originally published by Multnomah, and then republished by Parent-Wise about ten years later. The subtitles changed with the new editions. So he has many many hits, but for a smaller number of actual works.
http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...John Williams currently has 170 works. Many are the John Williams who does scores for movies made from books. Many are sheet music that GR users have rated and/or reviewed thinking they were the original book.
So, Super Librarians: For those, copy & paste the description, ISBNs, etc. useful information, change the author to the author for the book, combine the "book" with the other edition(s) of the book, then delete the item and then add back the item with all its information, including the NOT A BOOK and sheet music, or whatever, in the hopes that people won't go to that edition in the future if, in fact, they want to rate the book.
I did this with one example and I hope that's the way to handle these.
Rivka? When you're back... Or any other super librarian?
Lisa, I agree that that is the way to handle these situations, and is basically the procedure I've followed for similar cases, except that it never occurred to me to immediately re-add the problematic ISBN rather than waiting for the Amazon feed. It certainly makes more sense than hoping a librarian will find it once it reloads before another random user makes the same mistake again.
Yeah, I add them back with ISBNs and beat Amazon to it because if we let Amazon do it, there's bound to be more ratings/reviews attached to those "editions" by the time librarians find them. Makes more work. And there's plenty to do as it is.
I really hate to do this, but it just wouldn't be any fun to keep them all to myself. If it's not already obvious from the names from last week, virtually any even mildly common first or last name is likely to be in the GR DB as an author due to external (e.g., Amazon) DB errors. These can be tricky to find since searching for the "name" will lead to any author with that same first/last name. Sometimes, however, one can find sets of them through chaining or finding a series of books with the same common error. I stumbled across a series of these an hour or two ago, realized it was simply too much to take care of as they were encountered, and started copying the links. Most of these are fairly short lists, but some are a bit longer. While I couldn't be bothered to prune the repeats from earlier posts, I did alphabetize. And Be Warned...there Will definitely be a lot more since I didn't even finish the edits I was trying to make which led to this list...Ackerman

;-) Michael, That did take up most of my update feed on my home page.Oh joy.
It is endless but thanks for pointing them these out. Yes, I'm sure that there are many more. I'll start taking a look at them soon; I'll probably have some time a few days next week.
Edit: You know, some of these are new: I found another Michigan one.
Amazon is going to keep bestowing these on OUR/Goodreads's database.
I do think that these incorrect authors/items will provide endless work, so I do think that librarians & super librarians should concentrate on editing & deleting items/books that will have the most positive impact on the Goodreads site and for Goodreads members. That means, that in my opinion, we should pay particular attention to items that have multiple ratings/reviews, and a lot less attention to those items/authors that have no or extremely few ratings.
What do other librarians and super librarians think about this?
