Alex Lol. Half the people in the orchestra claimed they were Greasers, so I asked them where was their leather and motorcycles and cigarettes. They had none of that. One top of that, they all lived with me in the rich part of town. They said Greaser because they wanted to live free.

message 305: by K (new) - rated it 5 stars

K I read it in Grade 7 for English class.

message 326: by Jerry (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jerry Stogsdill HA! I remember distinctly the deal we struck with our 8th grade English teacher at Livaudais in Terrytown, LA about 1984. We do well on this certain test and he'd bring the AV rack in and let us watch The Outsiders as a class. Of course, within the first few minutes of the movie there is a little bit of grabassin and a lady's skirt gets flipped up and Mr. Barbera's face went bright red as we laughed. Loved that guy. He is one of the reasons I became a book nerd.

Melissa I did, we also watched the movie.

Lee Lipps I taught middle school from 1979-1991 and The Outsiders was required reading for my English classes.

I think the world of young teens as described in the book was a lot more real to the teens then than it would be to today's kids in the same age group today.

Imagine a world without cell phones, video games, desktop computers, and helicopter parents.

However, the class discussions were always intense and spirited.....and timeless. Junior high/middle school kids today would get just as wrapped up in them today as they did then.

And, now that I think of it, a discussion of how the technologies of today might have affected or effected the outcomes in this 1967 novel might be interesting. In fact, I could even painlessly sneak in a short English language usage lesson (affective v effective) and a brief discussion of the concept of anachronisms and how they are used.

Of course, I'd have to google them first.

My 7th graders in 1980 are about 45 years old now.

No doubt some still bear the psychological scars from having been in my classes (I had most of them for social studies as well).
