Jim Caviezel was the first person I thought of too. I think he's perfect for the role.

I think Matt Bomer would make a good Matthew, although I don't really know if he is tall enough. But he definitely has mesmerizing eyes. I think he could be made to look sinister.
Alan Rickman. He has totally been the voice of Matthew in my head as I've read the first two books. Such a velvety voice, and I think he is the master of the cocked eyebrow thing.
Victoria wrote: "I think Hugh Jackman would be a great Matthew :)"I would love to see Hugh as the Scottish Lord Maccon from Gail Carriger's books - a bit more wolfish to me.

Jane wrote: "And I think Gwyneth Paltorw will be perfect as Diana Bishop."I think she would be great.
What does anyone think about Ysbeau? Merryl Streep? Jodie Foster? Philippe - Sean Connery? Am I way off?
I pictured ysabeau as much younger than someone like meryl streep I think it describes her as young in the book somewhere but somebody mentioned Emily van camp as a possible Diana perhaps she would be more of an ysabeau or louisa

I like Christian Bale. He has a dark side...like Matthew and the look is right.
Yes i would love to see it as a movie too great story and that is a vampire with a witch how awesome will it be.

Christian Bale would be great - Dark, sexy, seductive, strong. I can see him in this role.
Henry Cavill ... He already has the acting experience from the Tudors to do well in the follow-up. :)
Heather wrote: "For some reason Matthew McConaughey springs to mind for the role of matthew, although I'm unsure whether he would be able to do the voice"I thought Mathew McConaughey would make a lovely Marcus. :)
Clive Owen. I don't know if the audiobook influenced me differently than reading it myself would have, but that's the closest to who I see. Still thinking on Diana.
Faydra wrote: "I think Gaspard Ulliel would be perfect for the role...and he's french as well."If he were older, I could see it. But Matthew was almost 40, and Gaspard looks like he's fresh out of adolescence.
I looked up many of the suggestions, and I have to go with Matt Bomer. He is what my mind pictured as I was reading. He looks a bit younger than my mind imagined, he is 34-- not much younger than Matthew... I bet with make up they could make him look a bit older and more distinguished.
Hands down...Gilles Marini. Google him if you don't know who he is. He's a French born actor turned recent American citizen. He is 36 and fits Matthew's physical description down to the smoldering eyes, build and accent to a tee!
Honestly, I can't see Matthew in any of the suggestions. I don't think his 'ideal' exists. I think it might be worth making the movie using realistic digital animation like 'Avatar'. Only then the real Matthew can be captured. The suggestions thus far have either been too old, too young, nose too small, nose too big, face too wide. If we could combine a few of them together we'd have him. That being said if it's not digital, best to have completely unknown actors play the roles!
OMG! MICHAEL FASSBENDER YES! I can't believe other people feel the same way. He truly is an amazing actor, he is mysterious, sexy, romantic and dark. He has this insistent pull with his eyes that will go perfect for a vampire. Yes Michael all the way!!!! ;D

I can picture Matthew in my head but nothing so far I have seen fits the bill. I am hunting the net to see if I can get a pic to post to show exactly what the image is in my head of him. Not much luck thus far, but I'll keep trying!
YES to Benedict Cumberbatch. I always imagine him. The physicality is not the same as the Matthew described in the book, but the personality is so, so right...and dear god, that man's voice sends chills up my spine. And for some reason I always imagine Michelle Dockery as Diana. Or Rachel Weisz. Neither are right based on the description in the book, but what can I say - I just love a good brunette, and I can't picture any blue-eyed blondes in the role (except for maybe an older version of Emma Watson?). Also, a Dockery/Cumberbatch love scene just sounds crazy hot to me.
Henry Cavill is a gorgeous man, and so are Jim Caviezel and Joe Manganiello, but none of them have the right charisma for the role, IMHO.
Clive Owen 10 years ago, maybe. I'm thinking of the character he played in Gosford Park. He hasn't really done anything that interesting since then.
Luke Owens....I want to see more of him before deciding. He does have that bad-boy look going on. I just think he's too young.
Linda wrote: "What does anyone think about Ysbeau? Merryl Streep? Jodie Foster? Philippe - Sean Connery? Am I way off?"Tilda Swinton?
I LOVE Cumberbatch if not for just his name..OK only kidding..he is GREAT and I have watched everything he has been in. Clive Owen to old .Definitely a brunette for the female role but need to research your suggestions. Is anyone concerned that we spend way too much time on something we have no control over?
@Linda....sorry I think you are way off on all of them.. I am almost 63 and don't picture any of those actors in this movie..Ok maybe the aunts can be older...
Matt Bomer was actually one of the first to come to mind, but I quite like the sound of Gaspard Ulliel and Michael Fassbender too...and I'm a huge fan of Alex O'Loughlin too, but dunno if he'd be right. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens...
I was thinking Stephen Moyer, I just seemed to picture him the entire time I was reading both books. However, I LOVE Michael Fassbender and could see him in the role easily. I was thinking Nicole Kidman for Diana but sadly I was thinking of her circa Practical Magic.
This picture of this actor is what I imagine him to look like without the stubble. Although this particular actor is too short and his accent would be very wrong. Also his head on shots don't quite have the maturity I invision his face to have but he's rather close. Mixture of him and Fassbender would be perfect.http://www.listal.com/viewimage/2115792h
Actually the older he gets the more he suits the part. If you search 'rodrigo guirao diaz 2012' in google images, his more recent and mature pics look better suited.
Anne wrote: "It has to be Michael Fassbender. That's all I could think while I was reading the book. He'd be perfect."He's who I pictured the whole time too...
I've never seen Fassbender in anything so can't comment but I think the person who plays Matthew has to be older then Diana...she seemed to be in awe of him..definitely an age difference is needed....
For some reason, I had Nathin Butler in my head while I was reading the book, therefore, I choose him. :)

What part would you want to see him in?

I am thinking Phillipe, Matthew's vampire dad. I don't know who I would want for Ysabeau, but maybe Bjork for the evil Louisa, and Sting for Marcus. Or does Marcus need to be young? All my favorite actors are old, like me!
This is who I pictured reading from the start... and his accent would be a great addition!http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0899681/

Wow, I think he's my fave out of all the choices so far.
Maybe a Baldwin to play Baldwin? Hahahaha
