A Discovery of Witches
discussion
Who would you like to see play Matthew in the movie, if one were made?

Matthew is described as exceptionally good looking, tall, and French. And he's in a 37-year-old body.
Gilles is hot, tall, and he's actually French. And he's 36. By the time they get around to filming anything, he'll be 37! He's absolutely perfect!

He is perfect. Tall. Pale. English/French (I assume). Oh and beautiful.

And for some reason, the male witch that threatens Diana throughout the beginning (I can't remember his name or find my copy) always appears in my head as Professor Slughorn from Harry Potter.

Oh my!! It has been so long since I read the book (or at least it feels that way.) so Matthew is kind of hazy in my mind. But I clicked on your link and it was like I just read the book last week!! Totally agree with your choice!!

YES - Aidan Turner could definitely play Matthew - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2636108/

Well helloooo, Aidan Turner... *bats eyelashes* ;)
He fits the Michael I imagined in my head pretty well, though I have no clue who he is.
Also, when I see Alex O'Loughlin, I can't picture him as being graceful like I picture Michael. He's too much of a guy's guy for me, like he belongs in cargo pants and just doesn't look right without either a surfboard or a weapon. I'd even expect him to use a surfboard as a weapon. He's too manly. Michael, while not feminine or anything, feels refined and elegant while radiating an aura of power.
I've also been drinking and should not be allowed access to a keyboard because I'll ramble like I'm doing now. Shutting up now.

Movies never do their books justice and this is something we all know and accept. I don't see how a movie could ruin a book for you. If anything, books ruin movies... I think there are quite a few good movies that I no longer enjoyed after reading the book that was so much better.

I must say, I'm most concerned about Diana's torture. It can go any of 3 ways.
a) It can be tastefully done, instilling the appropriate sense of dread, fear, sympathy, and anger.
b) It can go the other way and be a bloody torture-porn nightmare that belongs in a Hostel movie.
c) It can be completely white washed and turned into something more worthy of a Goosebumps novella.
I loved the torture scene in the book (though I didn't want her to be tortured) and I think Deborah handled it perfectly. She made me run the gamut of emotions and I love her for it. I only hope the movie can do the story justice. I know things will be different from the book, but if it strays too far, it'll be a serious disappointment. The story is what I care about more than whether or not the same dialogue is used or if Diana's napping is properly represented. =)

Clive maybe - Schaech - definitely not - not enough gravitas to pull it off.

That would be my pick too."
That was who I pictured while reading. He is so gorgeous....

While reading the book, I immediately pictured Henry Cavill. He's my go-to guy for tall, dark and handsome. I loved him in The Tudors. I could also see Joseph Morgan, Klous from Vampire Diaries.
It's wasn't until I finished the book, that I started to picture who Diana could be. I picture Emily Vancamp from Revenge.
This book is easily my favorite that I've read so far this year. I feel I should create a special shelf for it.

@Katherine..no no no not Emily Vancamp..she seems to have only one facial expression...deer in the head lights thing..wasn't fond of her in Brothers and Sisters
Henry Cavill is good!

As for Michael's brother, is it weird that I didn't really picture him as anything past an "angry male"...? I was so engrossed in Diana's torture and Michael's freaking out that the brother's physical appearance meant nothing to me. He could have been described as emo-punk with pink eyebrows and I would have been like "Whatever, go save herrr!!!"
