Who would you like to see play Matthew in the movie, if one were made?

Benedict Cumberbatch could certainly pull it off, but I hope he has enough sense to decline. He does speak French, by the way.
I know he's American, but Joe Manganiello looks the closest to what I envision Matthew to look like. I tried to add a picture, but don't see an upload button. I would so love to see this series made into a movie!
I'm supporting the Richard Armitage fraction. He's perfect for Matthew. Gerard Butler would be ideal as Gallowglass!
I sort of see Alexander Skarsgard as Gallowglass, mainly because he physically fits...very very tall and blonde. I can picture him saying "auntie" (if you've read the rest of the series). I picture Alan Cummings as Hamish ( who is small and very Scots). Gerard Butler would play a good Fernando from The Book of Life.
I dont know who this is but I think he fits Matthews character perfectly. Wish I knew who he is.https://s-media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/...
Gerard Butler is one that comes to mind, he is such an amazing actor, and I tend to drool at the sight of him. Hubby seems to think that if he is on TV...that the TV needs a tongue guard :P LOLhttp://www.imdb.com/name/nm0124930/?r...
Stephanie wrote: "Yeah, I agree as well, Richard Armitage does look just like how I pictured Matthew too. Funny. Never heard of the actor though, is he good?"He's excellent. Check him out in BBC's "North and South" adaptation. I think he would be incredible :)
Deborah Harkness must have thought of Richard Armitage, too, when writing the Book of Life! Matthew plays cello! :-)

Obviously Benedict Cumberbatch is Matthew. Karen Gillan is Diana. Charlize Theron is Mathew's mom (she's his age or younger).
I like the idea of a movie based on this book. If it could be better than the book that would be the only reason to make it.
I think only Michael Fassbender could pull off that pale intensity that is Matthew Clairmont. Question is, really, who to play Diana Bishop?
Licienne wrote: "I was thinking Richard Armitage or even Joseph Fiennes would be wonderful at Matthew"Yep, exactly so, Richard Armitage!
Several good suggestions (a young Pierce Bronsan is my pick, or Pierce himself - after all, Cary Grant played leading men well into his 50s and Matthew is an older Vampire). I think Richard Armitage is my favorite in the list (sorry Barrowman), and *The Hobbit* movies have wrapped, so it could work. Christian Bale is another good possibly - and he is Welsh, not American, tho' he often plays American characters. For Diana I'm thinking Nicole Kidman (assuming she can handle an Massachusetts accent), other possiblities - Jennifer Morrison (if she looks OK as a redhead), Marcia Cross (Desperate Housewives), Jennifer Lawrence (if she's available after The Hunger Games), Emma Watson.
With both Diana and Matthew I think it's important NOT to cast too young. Matthew's a 900+ year old Vampire - he should have gravitas. Diana's a Yale professor - a teenager would NOT be convincing, imo.
Sarah and Emily - One could easily be Penelope Wilton (Doctor Who, Downton Abbey); the other Dame Judy Dench.
Marcus - some of the younger actors mentioned above, imo, would be better as Marcus.
Matthew's Mother - A classically trained French actress!
The entire time I was reading 'A Discovery of Witches' (I just finished it), I could not picture anyone else portraying Matthew except Tom Mison! It must be Tom Mison! He is the man that portrays Ichabod Crane in 'Sleepy Hollow'.
Jill wrote: "How about Joe Manganiello? ...or Eddie Cibrian? :-)"I could see Joe Manganiello as Gallowglass. Big guy, has to play the heavy quite often. He'd be excellent.

Although Joe Manganiello is an excellent actor, Gallowglass is described as Nordic, blonde, blue eyed, tall. Manganiello is dark and brooding. Alexander Skarsgard could get away with the looks and he is use to playing a vampire. Just an opinion.
ohhhh k.....just watched The Holiday and OH MY found the perfect Matthew....Rufus Frederick Swell.....!
yeah I could see Henry C. (superman) as Matthew. However Matthew is supposed to be a really big guy which of course brought to mind Joe Manganiello, huba huba, he looks like he could carry the weight of plate-male.

He..."
I agree about Interview with a Vampire...they picked too well known actors for the box office and they really didn't fit the parts they played in my opinion.
