I don't know why but from the moment I started reading about Matthew, my initial thought was 'Christian Bale', although there are some really good 'suggested matthew's' in this thread! :)

Richard Armitage is absolutely the perfect person to play Matthew Clairmont. Watch him as Sir Guy of Gisborne in the BBC series 'Robin Hood.' You will see that he is made for this role. Here is a picture of him as Sir Guy, perfect: http://bit.ly/13LMFz6
Wow! I kept picturing him as the academics I grew up knowing... none of these men fit the bill. Too pretty and dashing.

I agree with the Richard Armitage suggestions as well. He looks just like I imagined Matthew would look as I was reading it and, as an actor, I think he could play the many levels/sides of the character.

I just hope he keeps to the book. Everytime a book gets adapted into a movie the screen writter ruins the movie.

Phoebe wrote "Tom Hiddleston"Tom Hiddleston would be perfect! He grew up knowing the Oxford campus since his Dad was at Oxford! His skills in foreign languages are superb, and his Shakespearian training as an actor would be put to good use as a Clairmont who lived through that period as well.
Richard Armitage- He has a quiet confidence about him. Can play Matt through any period in history. Not only is he a great actor-he also all the physical features and appearances of Matt. The fist time I saw Richard I said to my sister that if they ever made A Discovery of Witches into a movies it should be Richard, he looks like the Matt I envisioned. One and only choice. As for Diana- maybe somebody new.

Richard Armitage, would make the perfect Matthew. He definitely has the looks and the height not to mention the perfect age, to play a 1500 year old Vampire, as well as the demeanor needed for this role. He is the only one I pictured in this role as I read the book, anyone else, and I would have to have second thoughts about seeing the movie.
It's funny, but although I can see Richard Armitage playing Matthew, I think there are a number of actors who would be as good or better.
like who? I think there are others -- there always are -- but the others would end up redefining the character. Matthew has to be cold and harsh, yet at the same time warm and tender (not to mention hot), with a scorching intensity. There probably are others who would be acceptable, good even. But I cannot imagine anyone being *better* than RA. The ONLY improvement I can think of would be . . . does he speak French?
Oh, and he also has the capacity for humor. He's got it all. If I were ever to see him in person, I'm afraid the result might be a restraining order.
I think ANY actor shapes the role, redefines it even. This is as true of Armitage as it is of anyone else. Richard Armitage isn't Matthew Clairmont, but an extremely talented actor that many people see as having the potential to pull off a complex romantic lead. Who else could pull this off? A number of talented actors. This thread has listed several. I have actually become a convert to the notion of Benedict Cumberbatch because I absolutely think he has the right appearance and talent to do it. I picture Matthew as looking younger than Armitage. Ultimately it will probably be neither but someone else.
I'm still making the case for Richard Armitage. He has it all ... he's amazingly handsome, tall (6'2), he has long, elegant hands, and mesmerizing eyes. Did I mention that his voice is like rich, melted chocolate? Listen to his voice alone and you'll be sold. Oh, and here's another picture: http://bit.ly/Yooh3l ツ

Faydra wrote: "I think Gaspard Ulliel would be perfect for the role...and he's french as well."Oh my, I would just swoon!
I picture Mark Strong as Matthew with Naomi Watts as Diana. He has a commanding presence and she can pull off fragile yet strong.
jackie wrote: "If I was the casting director - Matthew would be played by Jim Caviezel."YES!!! He would be perfect!

Wendy wrote: "There is no more perfect choice than Francois Arnaud."I find him to be too young for Matthew. My first pick is Richard Armitage, but if we are going for a Frenchman, how about Grégory Fitoussi. Saw him for the first time on the new PBS series "Mr. Selfridge".
Richard Armitage is my vote also. He just looks like the descriptions of Matthew Clairmont in the book and he can act moody without being only an ornery bastard. I enjoyed the first two books in spite of there being too much Twilight flavor to the romance and very much because of too much detail about Elizabethan history, literature and the history of literature, science and the history of science, the history of witchcraft and sorcery, and... yes, so on.

All the history, science, etc. was interesting in it's way, but an author has to be very careful with stuff like that and has to weave it into the plot almost incidentally and not just toss it out there in conversations, internal or external. Also agree about RA. :-)

I think it takes something away from the story, albeit interesting in and of itself..I kept think "but what about Matthew and Diana" in some places. I am a huge Richard Armitage fan and he has been my pick since picking this book up. I kind of like Naomi Watts for Diana.
Jason Isaacs. As much as I love Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnon they are too old. Matthew was or looked to be in his thirties. Jason Isaac would be great, British, broody and he plays evil really well so when he needs to be dangerous, no problem. Anyone not familiar with Jason Isaacs, think Lucius Malfoy!
I never thought of Jason Isaacs, but love him and have seen him in many British shows/movies. He would be good. I still like Richard Armitage, but Isaacs would be a close second.
Jason Isaacs is a very good actor and a gorgeous Lucius Malfoy, but there is not so much difference in age between him and e.g. Colin Firth. My first choice is still Richard Armitage, but I agree, there are others who could be Matthew. Just to throw a new name in the discussion: what about Craig Parker?

I never thought about Craig Parker but he has a certain look about him, but I am sold on Richard Armitage over all so far. Just has the complexion, stature, old world feel.
There is only one Matthew Clairmont for me! Richard Armitage! www.armitage4clairmont.com There are good things happening with the campaign, and powers of persuasion are kicking in starting tomorrow with WB Wednesdays. For anyone wanting to support the campaign, check out www.facebook.com/armitage4clairmont tomorrow for more details (or now if you want to see lots of good Richard Armitage as Matthew photos and quotes). They are on Pinterest, Tumblr and YouTube as well. All the social media links are on the main RA4MC site.
I wasted a lot of time looking and drooling over all these awesome actors. I like Matt Bomer, but I think he's toooo "american." I think out of all of them Michael Fassbender would be terrific since he's hot and very well known. However, I was trying to figure out a closer match. I ended up choosing these guys. - Henry Cavill - British - http://images2.fanpop.com/images/phot...
- Raphaël Personnaz - French - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0675521/
- Matthew Goode - british - http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com...
- Alex Pettyfer - british - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1641117/
- Liam McIntyre - Australian - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2553987/?r...
Out of all of them I really like Matthew good & Raphaël Personnaz
