board games (duplicate thread)
I like the more "brainy" types of board games, such as Trivial Pursuit, Apples to Apples, and Scattegories.Monopoly is a favorite from childhood, but people are always surprised to see the capitalist dickhead side of me that comes out during that one.
My wife is one of the sweetest, most gentle people that I have ever met. A few years back at the in-laws house I witnessed her "bitter rage" side during a game of Life. Evidentally something about living in a trailer park with five kids just sets her off. To this day she still gets aggravated if I bring that up. It is very interesting that board games can arouse such seldom seen emotions in people.
I played the Redneck Game of Life recently. Do NOT let your wife play that game, Tadpole.I absolutely love board games, and cardgames even moreso. Apples to Apples is a great one! Last weekend, I learned a new game that's really similar to Carcasonne, only you build railroads instead of cities--it's neato. Imagine Iff is a fun game to play with a group of friends OR strangers. You get to "Imagine" how you would react "if" you were another member of your team and you get points for answering correctly.
Some more games I love:
Yahtzee
Hearts
Phase 10
Gin Rummy
Dominoes
Set
Asshole
Rummikub
Games I hate:
Monopoly
Scrabble
Poker
Risk
Trivial Pursuit
I wonder if a person's like or dislike of board games is inversely related to their level of competitiveness. I'm not at all competitive. When I play, I want to make sure I do well, but if I lose, I don't get bent out of shape. I honestly enjoy coming up with a good strategy, and I don't give two shits if I win. (I give about a quarter of a shit, I think.)
Mandy, I love Set! And Phase 10. And Skip-Bo. And Gin Rummy.
Well, I love games. I hate Monopoly and Life because they take too long, but I love most others. Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit are great (but when we play Trivial Pursuit, we let you get a pie on any spot, not just the pie spots). I love Scattergories, Apples 2 Apples, Imagine Iff, and Catch Prase.
I don't know about your theory, Mandy, because I'm pretty competitive and I love games. Also, my friend Marie's family is HUGELY competitive and get all bent out of shape, sometimes, but they play more games than anyone I know.
One of my favorite games to play is Compatibility. http://www.amazon.com/Compatibility-G...

Games I like (or at least tolerate):Clue, Life, Farkle, Jenga, Trivial Pursuit
Game I hate with a passion:
Monopoly
My Monopoly hatred stems from the last game of Monopoly I participated in. The year was 1995 and it was the summer after high school graduation. With some friends, I played in (and won) a game of Monopoly that lasted SEVEN HOURS! The reason it lasted that long was because after he was eliminated, the banker kept passing 500's to people in an effort to beat me. Haven't played a game since.
No but this particular method of cheating at Monopoly is probably called the Paulson method in some circles."Did you lose?"
"Yeah. The banker Paulsoned me again."
We've been big into The Settlers of Catan lately. And Sequence.
On holidays we always play Taboo or Pictionary. Apples to Apples is also fun.
In general I really like to play games, especially the kind where people jump up and down and get silly excited.

One reason my girlfriend and I left her family's Thanksgiving early yesterday was because they're all hyper-competitive when it comes to boardgames. The aunt that was hosting Thanksgiving still holds a grudge against my girlfriend from a game of dominos about three years ago.
Yeah, I agree, you can see the anger emerge when some people lose at board games. I can't bring up the word "Othello" around one of my best friend's wives because she and he got in a big fight about a game of Othello, like, twenty years ago. I'm SO tempted to bring it up, too. I'm immature that way.
Haha! Dominoes! That is one nerdy grudge.
It's a MO thing, Montambo. I know a few old guys that wouldn't hesitate to pop a cap in someone's ass for cheating at checkers...;)RA: You should definitely bring it up the next chance you get. I promise that any trouble that you get into will be brief compared to the fun, hence my mentioning of the "Life debacle" to my wife at least once a year. Yes, i'm immature that way also.
I hate Jenga. I just wanna karate chop that damn tower down! I don't know why...Flashback to my childhood: I loved Hungry Hungry Hippos. LOVED IT!!! My brother and sister and I wouldn't just sit on the ground and play a friendly game. Oh, no. Instead, we'd kneel over the board, crouch down, pinpoint sights set on the field of marbles, fists poised above the hippo-butt triggers. And then WHAM! Go time meant a frenzy of 3 children pounding our fists on those damn hippos as hard and fast as we could until evenutally their heads broke off. Holy shit, man. That was some great fun. I wish I could beat the crap out of a hungry hippo right this minute.
Hungry Hungry Hippos was also the game that taught me that an oral fixation could be a dangerous thing. I loved (and still love) putting things in my mouth and those Hungry Hungry Hippo marbles were PERFECT! Until I choked on one while my grandmother was sitting on the living room couch beside me. Afraid to get caught with a marble in my mouth, I ran into another room and prayed to whatever gods existed that I could cough the damn thing up. Thakfully, my prayers were answered. But I was embarrassed so I could hardly face my family for the rest of the night. I couldn't have been more than 5 or 6 years old. Good lord, my mother would have killed me if I'd choked to death on a marble.
Farkle's a dice game I just recently encountered. It's similar to Yahtzee. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farkle
We play the high stakes version and when you farkle out, you have to ring a small cow bell and say (or shout) Farkle. Alcohol enhances play.
I don't think of dominoes or cards as board games... No one I've socialized with in a quite a while plays games of any kind. (Of course, I don't socialize a lot, so that may be part of the problem.) When I have been at parties where people played board games it made me highly uncomfortable. (More than I would've been anyway.) I don't know why. I've been thinking about it since I saw this thread this morning... B/c the thought of playing dominoes or spades or rummy or poker doesn't bother me.
Mindy, I highly suggest you get to the bottom of that. You're missing out on some fun if you've never played Apples to Apples! Farkle sounds fun! (booze, yay!)
I'm secretly nerding out right now (don't tell anyone) and I wish we were all in a Scattergories chat room right now so we could play together. Shhhhh. Secret.
I LOVE board games! I love Apples to Apples, Moods, Trivial Pursuit (we have several versions), Scrabble, Scene It (we have several versions of that too), Cranium, Clue, Balderdash, Quip It, and many more.Amanda, we find yet another thing in common! I'm nerding out too. I want to invite all my friends over for a game night now!
Dave, that is so very beautiful! Do you play it or just admire it?The blog name reminds me of Balderdash. The boards remind me of Mah Jong.
I stumbled upon this blog yesterday and thought it was pretty cool. It was a nice coincidence that RA posted this topic. BTW did you notice the name of the game in English?
My actual three favorite board games are:Trivial Pursuit (but nobody will play this with me anymore. Sore losers.)
Axis & Allies
Life (I liked the little stock certificates you could get.)
Sarah, ha!!! I just contacted some friends to see if they wanted to come over tonight! :) What's Moods?Dave, ook ook!
Amanda: Moods is a MUST HAVE board game for actors! There are 8 mood cards laid out on the board. You roll a die and look at it secretly, then draw a phrase card, and you have to read the phrase out in the mood you rolled. So you might have to say "The toilet's clogged up" in a sexy voice. Then everyone guesses which mood it is.
Oh, that does sound good. I'll have to pick that up to store in my bag of tricks. Sometimes I work with new actos who have NO IDEA how to express themselves. This will be a great help! And fun!!! :)
MahJong! I forgot about MahJong!I've never actually played it with other people, but I have computer version that I LOVE! (I'm talking the four-player game, not the solitaire thing where you just find matches.) I could play MahJong with other people. I don't think of that as a board game either.
Edit: I did used to like Trivial Pursuit. (Mostly because I always won.)
I hate Trivial Pursuit because I never know the answers and I also don't see the point in memorizing all that trivia. The only place you can use it is for Trivial Pursuit.Let me rephrase, the only place I could use it woudld be for Trivial Pursuit. I suck at trivia.
I'm awful at strategy games like Risk and Chess. In fact, strategy ends up being my downfall at games like Scrabble as well. I'm better at games that are completely subjective.OH! Taboo is another good one. And Catch Phrase! I'm good at guessing-type games.
I wonder if the kind of game a person likes reflects what they're good at or what subjects he/she liked in school. Is your preference an indicator of whether you have a knack for philosophy or science or math or something...? I'm sure it all must be related somehow.
I love Trivial Pursuit, but I can never get anyone to play it with me.I also like Scrabble, Rummikub, Boggle, UNO, and Hearts.
But our family tradition isn't board games. It is to chat and listen to my brother-in-law tell stories about his days working for the Clinton administration, while watching the nieces put on a "show".
This show consists of them dancing around with my two year-old nephew Paulie, wearing their dress up clothes, and posing a lot. It's very entertaining, if a bit loud. :)
Sometimes on holidays my husband, brother-in-laws and their wifes would play board games. We like Balderdash, or Trivial Pursuit. My husband hates board games so it doesn't happen often. As a kid my family would have late night Rummy tournaments during the summer
Jacks, what if I didn't care about your brother in law talk about the Clinton administration? Could I leave the room? The show sounds interesting, though, but I imagine they'll stop doing it as they get older:)And no one wants to play Trivial Pursuit with you because rumor has it you cheat. No offense.:)
Jackie wouldn't cheat. I listened to her entire Christmas mix. Its testimony that her soul is too pure.
Looks like I'm at Jackie's table for Trivial Pursuit, RA.
*hands RA a turkey leg to gnaw*

How I love board games and card games! My favorite board game is Risk - I came to it rather late, 18, and it still blows my mind how all my peace and love friends do a complete 180: I'm gonna wipe you out and RULE THE WORLD!I grew up playing bridge but haven't played it since, that's a very cool card game.
There's a bunch a newer board games (relatively speaking to this old lady) that I got to play with Jake - Enchanted Forest, Labyrinth. I wish I wish I was good a chess but I suck - I'm much too impatient and non-methodical, more impulsive and intuitive, so I take forever to figure out my next move.
Since I am awful at trivia, I hate all those games, sheesh.
The only board game a play these days is Candyland. My opponent has trouble with going in the right direction and doesn't know the meaning of "win" or "lose."
Okay, this is going to sound stupid, but what is Apples to Apples. I have never heard or seen this.
Rummikub & UNO are fun, as are most card games.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/74The premise sounds stupid on paper, but once you get going, the game is unbelievably fun. We often make up new "house rules" when we play. Why? Because we can! TAKE THAT, AMERICA!
My roomie took my Apples to Apples game with her to the school where she teaches, and it got stolen. You wouldn't believe how pissed I got. Shit gets stolen from her school all the time. Why the hell didn't she lock it up? Ugh.
I told her not to. Because every time I play it, I'll just remember how mad I was that she let it get stolen. She said, "That's stupid. It's still a fun game." She has a point, but I'm in mourning!
When I did How to Succeed in Business a couple years ago, the women had very little to do in the second act so we'd play Apples to Apples in the dressing room.
Yup, Mindy, it's totally true. Card games, board games, rocking out to music that has very little to do with cheesy old musicals. I wicked at Egyptian Rat Screw. ... yup, that's a card game too, dirties. :)I like Scrabble, Risk, Trivial Pursuit and Monopoly. My parents have a really old Trivial Pursuit from the eighties with ridiculous questions nobody knows. Those are always fun games. Esp since we generally play it drunk at the holidays, and the adults either a) can't remember or b) when its a song question, they try to sing the song lyrics between them or do the dance that went with it. Yeah, none of them can sing. Or dance. Its slightly horrifying.

But I hate all board games. I can play chess, but it bores the shit out of me. I'm not very good. I can't think of any board game that I'd want to play.
Although I did have a good experience about a decade ago when my wife and I destroyed my brother in law and his wife at Christmas Trivial Pursuit. They are both highly competitive and you could see the steam coming out of their ears. Ha!
What do you think? Are board games worthwhile? Which ones, and why?
