1896-1970
Botanist Charles Gardner was the Government Botanist of Western Australia from 1927 to 1962 and also lectured in Botany at the University of Western Australia for almost 40 years (1924-1962). After his retirement in 1962 he became a member of the State Gardens Board (later National Parks Board) and had a role in securing 5 extensive areas as flora reserves.

Charles Gardner was Western Australia’s Government Botanist from 1929 to 1950. He contributed to the definition of the plant regions of the State, especially through his 1942 paper The Vegetation of Western Australia with special reference to climate and soils (J Proc R Soc West Aust 28:11-87). In 1935 he produced a very popular book West Australian Wildflowers (West Australian Newspapers Ltd) which has been revised several times and is still in print as Wildflowers of Western Australia.
I just noticed the dates of the 2 bios don't match. I guess I shouldn't believe everything I see on the internet...
According to 2 sources who actually match, he became the Govt Botanist January 1929 & retired 5 July 1960. He worked as a plant collector from 1920, and made his way up the ladder, so that could be part of the confusion. Sounds like a man obsessed with his plants but a nightmare to work with.
He does sound like that. After reading his bio I discovered he named the endangered plant I work with. He gave it a very boring name

Darwinia masonii - named after his friend Mr Mason. Botanists have no imagination https://florabase.dbca.wa.gov.au/brow...It may be the most ugly, scraggly plant that grows between rocks, but it has very pretty flowers.
More info for enquiring minds: I'm not a scientist, I only grow the plants for revegetation - and read the books about them, or at least enjoy the pictures.
Then I saw he named 200 species, so we probably grow lots of them.
Yeah, its nearly impossible to grow WA plants over here in Sydney, its too humid. I've tried many but very few survive.Notable failures incl E. Macrocarpa, E. Caesia silver princess. Sigh, I was so disappointed at those 2 dying. We no longer try our luck after the many failures. We stick to the east coast plants :)

The movie tie-in book was for the 1960 movie (there have been quite a few movies with that name) written by Alan Le May. Moved to the correct author.

The correct publish dates for paperback & ebook were already there Kylie.
Added missing or corrected page numbers to kindle & ebook.
Will need to refer the kindle to support to switch the isbn 10 to the ebook.
