Did Charlie Annoy Anyone Else In This Book?

Haidi I think it was hard for him to not be some what pleased that Jacob had kissed Bella, and this showed. I think it was just another one of his subtle(not sure if "subtle" is the right word!) ways of indicating to Edward and Bella that he prefered Jacob.

It didn't bother me and I still love Charlie as a character.

Mikaela No Charlie isn't annoying! The being 'amused' at Bella punching Jacob and being kissed by Jacob is who Charlie is, it isn't a secret that Charlie prefers Jacob over Edward. Charlie is one of those characters that adds a light side to a situation. So i will so it again, Charlie ain't annoying :)

I agree with you, Jaye. No matter his preference of Jacob over Edward, I don't understand how, as a father, he could condone that and even be amused by it! It really annoyed and surprised me.

Cynthia I do love the series and Charlie. I think on the whole Stephanie Meyers has done an excellent job. I was disappointed and annoyed with Charlie's choice to ground Bella or to treat her gift of cooking and cleaning as punishment. I am against punishment in loving relationships, so that upset me. I am especially against turning housework or chores into punishment rather than a gift of service. I believe in encouraging children and teens to help, but by empowerment not punishment. I found that the grounding thread went on for too long. I realize the author was trying to show Charlie's disapproval of Edward, but it shouldn't be done through a parental power play. The parenting hat is not a trumph card for the parent's feelings. I found that the grounding element to the Eclipse book detracted from the strength of the story. So, yes, I was annoyed by Charlie in Eclipse. I am still a fan and impressed with the series, but as a writer, editor, feminist and non punitive teacher, I crossed quite a few lines out of my personal copy of Eclipse so they wouldn't keep annoying me and I think the next edition of Eclipse should cut some of those lines out too. Good observations about Charlie's reaction to Jacob's kiss.

Jenn I love Charlie! He was the comedic relief throught all the movies, my bf watches these movies with me but just likes the fight scenes and he enjoys Charlies dry wit!

L.M. DeWalt I love Charlie and the fact that sometimes he doesn't know when to act like an immature teenager or a grown man who is a father just endears him more. Regardless of how he behaves, we all know, as he has made it very clear to us and everyone else, that he loves his daughter and will do anything for her.

Samirah lol I agree

Ariadne I felt the exact same way. If someone just forced themselves onto him he wouldn't even hesitate to arrest them. But since he prefers Jacob he just shrugged it off. I was severely disappointed in him in that part of the book.

Nicole D. Charlie should have been more upset that Jacob kept kissing Bella when she wanted him to stop.I was also disappointed in him and I also didn't like Jacob in Eclipse.

I hated Jacob in eclipse. He was and will always be obnoxious because how he acted in it.

Mikaela Ripley Woah dude ive never met anyone who spells it like that! nice name :)

when i first read the title of the discussion, i thought i was gonna write "i loved charlie, he is one of the few characters i adored in the sequel. why would anyone ask that?"
but then i read your comment, and yeah, you got a point. i agree.

Yasmeen but i still like him anyway :)

I completely agree with you. That seemed very wrong the way he reacted to (view spoiler)

Amy I think Charlie did what a lot of parents have done in anger and fear - thrown down a punishment that is way too harsh and then not want to retract it which would show that he gave in. As for not reacting "right" to Jacob? He has watched Jacob grow up and is more like a second father or uncle to him, so he knew Jacob wasn't going to go too far with Bella. He trusted Jacob. Jacob healed Bella when Edward dumped her into a severe depression. I can clearly see why he likes and trusts Jacob more.

Danielle The Book Huntress I don't think it should matter how close Charlie is to Jacob. If he kissed Bella and she didn't want it, and she ended up breaking her hand because she was trying to make him stop, that should have made Charlie upset because Jacob wasn't respecting Bella.

That's exactly my point. It should never matter how much he "prefers" Jacob. Something upset Bella and by someone she thought she could trust to never make her uncomfortable in anyway. And Charlie didn't seem the least bit fazed by the news.

Yasmeen Sara :) wrote: "I like Charlie he seems like a really nice guy. I felt so bad for him when in Twilight when Bella told him she needed to get out of town and couldn't stay in Forks and that she couldn't stay there..."

i did too, more in the movie than the book as i remember..

thanks nice name yerself

Kirby Amy wrote: "I think Charlie did what a lot of parents have done in anger and fear - thrown down a punishment that is way too harsh and then not want to retract it which would show that he gave in. As for not r..."

I agree. also, charlie probably shared jacob's opinion that bella needed to actually face up to her true feelings for jacob (as she eventually did- prompted by a kiss), so that could be why he didn't feel like jacob had violated his daughter.

and, he DID make sure that bella knew how to throw a punch for future reference...it's not like he was completely callous about the whole thing.

Honestly, I disagree. How would you like it if someone forced themselves upon you all the while claiming you had supposed feelings for them? I bet you wouldn't like it very much. Bella may have been in denial throughout the whole book but all Jacob had to go on was speculation that Bella loved him. Even if she had said it early on in the book, it still does NOT give him the right to force himself onto her if she does not want him to. And Charlie should have respected that instead of taking Jacob's side and on top of that cheering him on.

Well said

Charlie should have been outraged on Bella's behalf, the kiss was clearly unwelcome, would a rape have been ok because he prefer Jacob, no, then why a kiss? Jacob assulted her, and he had reason enough to suspect it, the kiss, wouldn't be welcome, so what he did was sexually assault her because he had a point to prove.

message 26: by C.C. (new) - rated it 3 stars

C.C. Well it was totally obvious that he liked Jacob better but yeah, I was annoyed, Bella obviously didn't like what Jacob did and she made it clear. He should be outraged because Jacob took advantage of Bella

♥ Alexia -Team Malec ♥ I just felt he wasn't very interesting-That's all :)

Simplyminali i dont really mind charlie. hes just there to support bella's character
