I do believe it is a poor fit for him, because he is unable to remain dispassionate/unemotional about his cases. I understand that police officers do have feelings regarding cases, but they must supress them and act WITHIN the law. Lester's title and uniform gave him the imagined power to act ABOVE the law.
Again I think we have a case of no sense of self here. Misguided good intentions? Didn't he find the job from a poster about domestic violence? He wanted to help but at what cost? He did so by (again) breaking the law. And it *wasn't* the first time. He had broken the law when he stole the drugs from the other crime scene to plant at that one! He has some sort of super hero complex. And didn't he find out later that he was wrong about the guy???
