Chemicals in the air or something?
I think it was to do with the radioactive materials which hadn't completely been cleaned up after the nuclear accident years before or something along those lines
radioactive nuclear stuff that causes them to mutate? it's not completely clear.
is it ever explained towards the end of the series?
We've gotten ideas but its never been fully explained
wasent it that stuff in the food like you guys are talking about that nuclear stuff that spilled and they ate it

I'm only half way through hunger, but i always thought it had something to do with whatever that thing down the mine is
I think it was little Pete. Little Pete changed the animals and people to fit his imagination.
but then where did little Pete get his powers from?
Little Pete was always a bit different I guess?
Umm the radioactive, maybe born with it, the darkness,little pete, way to many options with this one i hope that he explains in one of the later books
in fear theres this thing thats abriviated and it was a chemical or radioactive thing that was spilled by the military i think
I think by The Darkness coming to Perdido Beach, it released some sort of power accidently or power just radiated off it, that caused the kids to mutate.

NEW UPDATE: I just finished FEAR, the BEST book of the series. I'm not going to spoil anything, but the ending was epic! So excited for LIGHT!
By the way it isn't explained in FEAR. They talk about it but it isn't explained.
well u know when tht guy in the military was talking to connie temple in her hotel room and talked about tht abreviated thing and it was something about a chemical spill and it got in the teens food ...... i think and im only 300 pgs in i already know what happens at the end its on wikipedia hahahahah its a HUGE surprise :)
Spoilers!!so this alein thing crashed into the power plant and in stead of the people going down and cchecking it out they build over the thing. then cause of the nucleare stuff (i can't spell) it grew and became selfaware and became the giaphage or "the Darkness" then he did something and gave the teens powers...oh and huger is about the darkness trying to find more necleare stuff...
