Anyone interested in discussing hosting a reading group? We could select the line-up for 2012 -- and host panel discussions? With the author participating for partial conversations or Q&A. Thoughts?

Kristine Cayne (kristinecayne) | 10 comments Sounds like a fantastic idea!

Gregory Carrico (gramico) | 11 comments Count me in!
I am brand new here, so I haven't built up a friends list yet, but I'd love to participate!

message 4: by Darlene (new)

Darlene Craviotto (darsbooks) | 8 comments I'm in the same boat as Greg---but I'm willing to give it a go.

message 5: by Diana (new)

Diana Layne (dianalaynebooks) | 4 comments Sounds fun, but I'm clueless too. I think I only have a couple of friends, have not had time to figure out how this works!

Thanks so much for fine tuning the description, Tracie. And for starting this discussion. I'll post this thread to the loop to get some more of the others to come over here. Me can definitely make this happen. :)

message 7: by Meredith (new)

Meredith Bond (merrybond) | 2 comments I love it. I've never done anything like it before, like Greg and Darlene, but I'm up for just about anything.

Karysa Faire (karysafaire) | 17 comments I think it's a great idea! I'd be happy to help coordinate/moderate/participate/whatever. :-)

Julie Day | 2 comments Yes, good idea. Count me in. Although I have dozens of books already to read but maybe can fit in one or two now and then.

message 12: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Seabrook Sounds like fun. :)

Christy Hayes (christyhayes) | 1 comments I'm in!

message 14: by Karysa (new)

Karysa Faire (karysafaire) | 17 comments A practical question here--how are we going to read fellow indie authors' books and comment on them without 'hurting feelings'? I know we want to support each other AND we are readers so we're bound to not love everything we read.

Maybe we should read indie authors who are not members of this group?

Or read three books over a given time and then vote for the best?

Or maybe read two books, vote for the best, then read another book to compare to the 'winner' of the first, and so on?

Or am I making this too complicated? :-)

message 15: by Darlene (new)

Darlene Craviotto (darsbooks) | 8 comments Sounds rather complicated to me, but I say that not in a negative way. ;) I think it's wonderful of you, Karysa to be protective of everyone's feelings. Perhaps we can set some ground rules about the kind of criticism we can offer. I think part of the fun of being in this reading group is to read each other's books. There are certain genres of books I wouldn't normally read but I'm willing to give them a read because the authors are part of this group.

message 16: by Julie (new)

Julie Day | 2 comments Yes, let's set some rules. Don't review anyone in this group, and don't review anyone who uses the same designers or editors or companies. I know someone who reviews a lot and she doesn't review anyone's books of authors she knows and authors who are published by the same publishers as her. Good rule that.

message 17: by Darlene (new)

Darlene Craviotto (darsbooks) | 8 comments I think all independent books should be considered and that we simply vote to see which title we want to read. I second the recommendations that Tamara made (message #18).

message 18: by Kristine (new)

Kristine Cayne (kristinecayne) | 10 comments I agree. Not much point to this group if we don't read each other's books.I like Tamara's suggestions.

I think the nomination process Tamara suggested is great. But I am confused about whether or not to allow our own books. We don't want to earn anyone's disrespect by seeming self-serving. And I know we are all trying to find more readers, but maybe we can do that by attracting more to the club and just getting to know them as fellow readers. If any of you know of ground rules that work for other groups please share them. I know in some clubs the author cannot take part just for the month when their own book is being discussed. Tracy also had some opinions on this, but I think she said she'd be unavailable for a few days.

message 20: by Gregory (new)

Gregory Carrico (gramico) | 11 comments Since we are among friends, may I speak plainly?

I think that most, if not all of us have a book published. I would not be opposed to simply putting all of our most recent books (or the first of a series) into a digital hat, assign them to a reading order, or vote on a reading order, and dig in. I wouldn't mind a bit if we discussed each others books exclusively.

Being very new to this sort of thing, however, I don't know if this creates a sense of impropriety or not. I think if we publicly establish that we are a group of authors discussing each others work, and that we welcome and cherish the participation of all who wish to join, then the expectations of new members have been managed.

To be fair, if any member does not have a book they wish to discuss, then they could include whatever book they choose in the list, if they were so inclined. If Stephen King, Orson Scott Card, George Martin, and a dozen other authors allowed me to participate their open discussion of each others books, I'd be thrilled to join.

On open discussion:
I think that if we opt in with our own titles, we should also be prepared to accept each others critiques and comments in a spirit of friendship and professional camaraderie.

We should each be obliged to respectfully present our honest opinions and interpretations of what we read. We have a unique opportunity to share our work with our fellow authors, and learn from each other in ways that we cannot with our friends and family. It would be a shame to waste that opportunity, in my humble opinion.

Having said this, I am very happy to go along with whatever we decide to do. I'm easy :)

With Warm Regards,
Greg

Maybe we could incorporate what Greg said about authors reading each other's work into the group description so it's right there up front. And if we do a mix of member and non-member authors and make it both of a "sharing and exploring" type thing as Tamara described. Then we just need ground rules. And do we want to call it a reading challenge and name it with a title we could hashtag?
