Al "Tank" (alkalar) | 114 comments We've started this Discussion Topic for people who love, kinda like, hate, or are interested in eBooks and the technology involved.

My name is Al Kalar and I'm an employee of an eBook publisher, so I know a little about the subject, but certainly not everything. And, no, I won't be hawking our wares here. That's still something that authors and publishers should be doing in the Authors Corner.

I can't be here all the time (my life is very busy and my boss actually wants me to work at my job occasionally), but I'll peek in when I can and will certainly read everything that comes through GR's daily emailing.

So, join in. Start a discussion thread. Have fun. And share your questions, passions, and your knowledge.

Kelly (kshelley83) | 17 comments Well I used to hate e-books and have come into the the kinda like territory recently. There are still some things that a screen can't do for me but for travel I think e-books are going to be my best friends.

After my tax returns I am considering a Kindle Fire. I was a true anti eReader for the longest time but it may be time to turn to the next page in literary evolution and slide my finger across the screen to read a classic.

Just a thought, maybe I can get an older book maybe a classic and do a cut out like people used to, to hide guns or money and put my kindle in it. Then it will look like a book smell like a book and if I am in public I wont look like a pretentious show off. "Ooo look at my shiny new technology." I am not anti technology, but I am anti bluetooth device in my ear talking to myself in public or sitting at dinner with my date and having a blue light flashing in my ear letting her know I may get an important call more important than sitting with her. But I digress. I like to read in public places, beach, coffee shop, etc. I don't like to commercialize my experience though.

Kelly (kshelley83) | 17 comments I do have a reason to prefer paper this morning...no one ever leaves money in a ebook they're giving away. Found a $20 this morning in a free book.

message 7: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kshelley83) | 17 comments I know too many people that have them where I live to feel like a show off. When it was new tech I wouldn't have dreamt of getting an ereader. Recently, I got the most basic. For $78 I'm not too worried, especially with my content (97% free 3% 0.99 books, being available anyway).

When I owned a used bookstore I went to an auction and bought 2 cases of books for $2 total. Got home and as I was looking through them I found a $50 torn in half used as a bookmark. I taped it up and took it to the bank. $Cha Ching$

Amanda (porterak) @Wes I was anti ereaders too. But I broke down and asked for one this past Christmas. But I was trying to be specific and not get the Kindle fire. All I wanted was just the Kindle Touch cause I was a afraid I would put all these other apps and things on it. Well I got the fire and well I have to say I love it. For example a reason why. I just finished The Hunger Games on the fire and well I didn't want to run out and wait to get the next two books and I was able to just purchase them right there on the fire. No mess no trouble and they were cheaper than the actual paper back book. They function great. Simple use. Easy. And I have not put really anything on it but books. Although I do have the goodreads app on there so to update my status on the book I am reading. Plus I still read real books because well they really aren't going anywhere fast. So don't wait to long to jump on the band wagon of ereaders because you will be glad you did.

My daughter has a Kindle Fire and the cover I got for her looks like an old book.It comes in tan and red.The red is not bright ,it is a muted red.

Amanda (porterak) I found a downside to my Kindle Fire. I can't read it in sunlight and oh that so upsets me. I knew there was a reason to want a specific thing. Oh well I still enjoy reading on it.

A color tablet is neat, but it's backlit just like a computer screen. I heard that color digital ink has been invented, but as far as I know it hasn't been used for anything yet.

For sunlight, there's still only black & white (grey scale) digital ink.

Soad (jumping_crickets) color digital ink would be nice sometimes it does bum me out seeing black and white its like that movie... i cant remember the name .. pleasantville i think i hope they use it soon it would sell.

Of course, you have to bear in mind that the inside of most books are black and white. The only "bummer" is the lack of color for the covers (often fine works of art).

Of course, picture books (children's illustrated books and "coffee table" picture collections) just can't be viewed in B&W, unless you're an old fart like me who grew up in a B&W world.

message 17: by Soad (new)

Soad (jumping_crickets) ha ha ur not that old, u just watch too much B&W like me.

First TV in the house when I was in my teens. B&W (only thing available). Photography nut, shot B&W film so I could soup my own and do my own printing in the H.S. (and then college) labs. Even mixed my own chemicals. Most people of that era could tell colors from the shades of black on the TV screen.

My great grandkids refer to that as "the dark ages, before dirt was invented".

haaa nah i love B&W photography its just has more shades then color does. does that make sense?!? i would love to have learned how to mix chemicals and make my own photography but what can i say the days are too short.

Now that digital photography is common, I don't miss working in the darkroom at all. I can do most things easier and faster with a simple graphics program on my computer (except dodging which is an art -- and even that can probably be handled by Photo$hop).

message 21: by Soad (new)

Soad (jumping_crickets) i dont know i've always seen that as the highlight of doing ur own work, but i guess its a patience thing i think i would prefer a darkroom its seems more satisfying.

Madilynn i have a NOOK

message 23: by Nina (new)

Nina (marshnina) | 6 comments I was at first anti ereaders but then started looking at them and the books. I researched between a Kindle and a NOOK. I did an informal survey and found that most people that I talked to had or really wanted to switch to the NOOK. That is the one I was leaning towards and was the one I puchased. I LOVE my NOOK!!!!!

message 24: by Billy-jean (new)

Billy-jean | 3 comments I have a nook and I really love it. But the only thing I really do not understand is that ebooks cost more or just as much as a regular book. Why? I love B&N site but it just does not give as much free ebooks as amazon does for kindle. With that being said I will not get a kindle.

eBooks that cost as much as paper are usually the product of publishers who are still, foolishly, trying to hold the line on the old technology. Most eBooks cost less than their mass market paperback counterparts. In fact, many very fine eBooks are being published exclusively in electronic format, often by top name authors who've jumped ship with their original publisher and gone independent.

Of course, there is a lot of cheap trash out there, but the ability to preview up to 20% of a book before you buy, plus the reviews of other readers, can help you to make intelligent shopping decisions, often at prices below $5 USD.
