Sam McGraw The plot dragged, the main characters were boorish, the main ideas for the novel jumped and skipped as though it were a children's hop-scotch match, and there were too many unimportant details thrown in at you at once.

Patricia Toth I had to read it in school and I wasn't actually fascinated either, still there were some things I liked about it.such as Pip's innocent perspective and the switches in pov,..narratology stuff.. I think it's really well written:)

Sam McGraw Oh as a critic, its a wonderful book, but as a reader, its just not my type....

Buddy I actually liked the book but Ive met just as many people that would agree with you sam...I mostly just loved the writing style.

Sam McGraw Yeah buddy it just depends on what kind of writing style suits you the best...... I personally am a fan of "life of pi" but "Great expectations" just didn't interest me enough to actually enjoy it. Plus, when it's forces reading for an English class that takes some of the fun out of it...

Levente Pánczél That is Charles Dicken's credits how he shows to us this little young vulnerable fellow's change as the time passes on. I know a lots of us, readers, didn't like Pip in the end as he changed a lot and treated people in a bit appropriate way but considering his childhood i think it isn't as bad as it could've turned out to be. I personally, in the beginning i felt so sorry for him as he's being the subject of laughter and everyone were intimidating him ,so i can understand why his behavior turned into a selfish demeanor in the end.
And i don't agree with it, but i can totally understand it.
I think it is genius from Dickens how he put his personality together, keep it in your mind, no one is perfect and neither was Pip.
I loved the end that there wasn't really a happy end. I was thinking as i was reading it that Estella and Pip are going to get together and get married in the end but to my surprise it didn't happen. Well done Dickens, i love surprises! :)

Marren I like reading it. I agree with Levente it is full of surprises, that is one of the reasons I enjoyed the book. I like Pip from the beginning but I must admit it took me a long time to read the first few chapters. However, as soon I got settled in the story, I enjoyed the flow of the plot.

Michael Spring All Dickens' children are overdone, too good for their own boots, and have the kind of moral sense that most people don't get till after 30. Look beyond that and you have to love this book - I am still haunted by Magwitch appearing from behind that gravestone - and while you can't really go with a 'realistic' view of most of the characters, there is something elemental about it all.

//claire I absolutely loved this book! It helps to see the movie first. It helps me follow the story and give the characters a face. My favorite movie adaption was the BBC miniseries with douglas booth in it.

It was very sad to see how Pip changed. I almost cried when he practically disowned Joe and Biddy and left them to become "a gentleman of great expectations." He became arrogant and proud. I liked him much better as the child who helped the man on the marshes, knowing how dangerous he was.

It appears to me that you enjoyed this book. :) Actually, i have read it again :) and noticed a lots of things that didn't realized when i was reading in the first place. At the second time, i stopped-while a was reading-many times 'cos of the way how Dickens described thing. It was amazing. And i loved the end too so much. When i read the first few chapters i was a bit terrified against all of the characters(apart from Joe, of course) 'cos Dickens is really good to make situations, characters, affairs, tenseness so real. And at the end i was absolutely happy when everything (well most of the things) became nice :) Pip was much relaxed even though he got a huge debt that our very loyal Joe paid off. But anyway, Marren, why didn't you rate it with 4 or 5 stars? What do you reckon what was missing from in it that rendered the book average and 'tepid' for you?

The main thing I noticed in Pip is that he became aware of the contrast in society, and of how harsh the world can be. Not so much at the very start, although his parents did die and he was almost killed.

Adding to the pain of that, the Royal Highness Miss Havisham and her "daughter" weren't exactly cordial to Pip, either.

Might I say, Pip becomes revengeful even though initially he doesn't know it.
