I think there's equal suffering everywhere. I mean, even Katniss' mom lost pretty much everything. Her husband died, her youngest daughter gets reaped and is replaced by her oldest daughter. She then has to watch her daughter almost die. Then has to see it all over again. Also has to watch her daughter "in love with a boy" on live television with no warning whatsoever. [what's a mom to think?] Loses her daughters to the cause. & then has to leave because she just couldn't take it anymore. But who could? SO much suffering for EVERYONE....this would make a good essay topic for an english class lol

Definitely Peeta. Fisrst struggling with the realization that he may never earn the girls heart that he loved. Then going through pain and losing his leg in the first hunger games. And then in the secnd book, taken away and getting his mind messed up and filled with hatred for Katniss that would have never een there, making hi dillusional. How much pain he would have gonethrough and hw hard it was to over come those things, all made possible by his love for Katniss.
Would someone please remind me when Peta got raped? Oh he didn't? I mean that's what I thought, but still. Peta, Katniss, and Gale all got off easy. They didn't get RAPED. Finnick did. For years. If you say anyone other than Finnick suffered the most, you clearly don't comprehend what rape is. He spent years in the sex trade. I'd rather have my family die than be stuck in the sex trade. If you argue otherwise, you're probably an awful person. Good luck in life.
Peeta was hijacked and soooo sad, so Annie or Peeta or Johanna not Katniss she caused some/most of it
Midwestocean wrote: "Gale because he lost the love of his life."He was so over her and all into the cause by the end of the book... in the begining yeah I would say he suffered but by the end he had let it consume who he was..
i think peeta did. though everyone obviously suffered i think he suffered a tiny bit more. peeta had a sweet sense of faith in the good in people i think. in people's strength against adversity and in his own strength. i reckon through his experience that was shaken and that would be enough to screw anyone over. that and he would've had this whole internal struggle and that would be crap. Plus he totally lost everyone he loved except katniss of course but his entire family and his home and stuff.
Katniss for me, of course :(Prim was the only reason she made those whole things on three books, in the end it was nothing. The only positive result is just there is no Hunger Games anymore. I was realy shocked when I knew Prim died :(
Peeta and Katniss. Peeta because he was tortured into thinking that he needs to kill Katniss, the girl he loves. But Katniss, lost her whole family, her best friend, and even Peeta for a while. Plus, she was thrown into this whole rebellion thing, and all she wanted to do was protect Prim. And in the Hunger Games, she lost Rue and all of the other tributes, apart from Peeta, even if she didn't like all of them. I know Peeta lost his family as well, and the tributes, but his name was chosen, and Katniss didn't have to participate. :(But everyone suffered.
I think that katniss suffered the mist because she was put in the hunger games she lost everything she was pit through so much and in the end she still lost. In the end no matter what she did she couldn't have it all. And that's why in my opinion she lost so the most because she just wanted to save her sister from the world she was cursed 2 live in. But in the end she lost what shee was trying 2 save. And more.
i think that Annie suffered the most because she already mad, pregnant, and then Finnick dies... i feel really bad for her. :(
i think that apsoulutly everyone suffered in many different ways..you can't really single out one person
i think prim for one then also finnick. he was in a way a sex slave and then dies by geting riped apart. also he did alot for katniss agreeing to die just for the facted that she would live.
Samuel wrote: "Me."I totally agree, possibly one of the most depressing endings ever. It's right up their with the Nightshade series book Bloodrose.
These books were very based on the idea of what would happen to you if you disobeyed the Capitol. So I think that the Avox's should have a shout out here. The we're tortured and put to work as slaves of all kinds. That would have you welcoming death. Katniss let's remind everyone that she herself suffered from mental illness in the first book then rue died, the peeta found out that she didn't love him the snow made her wear her fake wedding dress then her home and everything she loved in distr. 12 was destroyed then peeta the very peraon that loved her unconditionally wanted to kill her then prim dies. That really sucks. Don't even get me started on Johanna with the water electrocution. Then there's peeta with everything he love being ripped away from him all at once. Finnick a sex slave for the Capitol with the only one he loved being tortured. And everyone else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!but the books were great !
I think Gale suffered the most because in the end Katniss just kinda forgot about him. I also think that Katniss slightly suffered because she just kind of had to forget about what had happened with the Hunger Games and just keep living and it seemed like it never really worked for her. It was just too distracting for her. I feel bad for her because she wants to tell her kids what happened in the past or anyone really but it's just too hard for her.
They all got broken life at the end. The twisted politics from all end, sacrifice as many life’s as need for the "greater good". How common.
What make this book so strong , that at the end all the characters you get to know and love were lost or suffer so much, that even the big change at the end didn’t matter anymore, you feel for the characters and all their lost.
Tough to point out just one person... Who didn't suffer terribly. Sitting on the fence here, I really can't decide but Gale seemed to be left to the war effort where Peeta and Katniss seemed to move on to some extent
Eve wrote: "I have to say: everyone. This book was told through the eyes of one character (who suffered greatly and saw so many suffer too) but in the end --- every single person suffered. It was a book that mmade me reflect that our actions today could impact our future generations in ways we irresponsibly avoid seeing. That is what I took from this book: to be less selfish, to be more aware of my world, and to put my grain in so that those who live after me can have a better life."Totally agreed!
Annie- the man she loves died with a baby on the way, Finnick- risked his life, never even saw his child and would never see the one he loves, his body was being sold by the president, Johanna- Lost everything and was tortured and
Peeta- lost everything as well, tortured for a long time, mind controlled

Blake wrote: "I'd rather have my family die than be stuck in the sex trade. If you argue otherwise, you're probably an awful person. Good luck in life."that's a terrible thing to say. different people have different priorities. that's perfectly fine that these are yours, but I think that a large portion of people would rather suffer every imaginable indignity and trauma than lose their loved ones (you know, sorta the premise of the hunger games)...and some perhaps would even say that "if you argue otherwise, you're probably an awful person."
To be honest... most of the characters suffered a lot in their own ways. I can't decide who suffered the most because each and every one of them is different.

I think that everyone would agree the readers suffered the most :)! I mean, forget about Katniss.
I think Annie definitely suffered a lot, after seeing Finnick in the games, then going into the games, then join insane because of the games, seeing Finnick go into the games again, Mags volunteering for her, then int he end when she finally gets Finnick bad, she loses him forever! BUt everybody suffered a great amount.
No one character suffered more than another. All of the characters we meet in the story (more or less) suffer in some way. It is a matter of how that suffering affects and changes them that determines whether or not they are likeable characters. For instance, I see a lot of people who say that Katniss's mom suffers the most. Because she did not grow and change as a result of her circumstances, (at least not for the better), I feel NOTHING for Katniss's mom.
On the other hand, Haymitch, Katniss, Peeta, and Gale all make changes and grow as a result of their ordeals.
This is kind of an unfair question in my opinion. Anyone who had to take part in the hunger games; whether it was watching them, being in them, or any other assistance in them, anyone who lived in the impoverished districts, anyone who was affected by the war between the Capitol and the rebels; everyone in these books suffered more than anyone ever deserves to. This being said, the things that Haymitch and Finnick were put through stood out to me. Also I think I suffered a great deal because I had to sit through so many wonderful people's lives being ripped apart; so helpless.
Victoria wrote: "This is kind of an unfair question in my opinion. Anyone who had to take part in the hunger games; whether it was watching them, being in them, or any other assistance in them, anyone who lived in ..."I agree !
Victoria wrote: "This is kind of an unfair question in my opinion. Anyone who had to take part in the hunger games; whether it was watching them, being in them, or any other assistance in them, any..."So true.
Katniss suffered because she lost Peeta and Prim, Gale suffered because he lost Katniss, and Peeta suffered because he lost his mind. Haymitch lost his family. Watching the Games was awful for the families and friends of the kids. And even winning the Games you were scarred forever. Everyone suffered.
The first name that came up on my mind was "Gale" ... But I'm gonna say Katniss, Peeta, Annie... everyone.
They all suffered a crazy amount, except for maybe people in the Capitol, but still even they kind of suffered because of their lifestyle and what they didn't know. Everyone has trials, everyone suffered, really. Katniss. Peeta. Gale. Prim. And Prim's mother, she is a hero. Even Cato. Look at him. He was trained to kill. He could have had such a great life. But his whole life he was told, "Take this weapon, and someday you can kill people on live national television." They all suffered a ton.
Annie suffered the most through out her whole life (being in the games, losing her family, going crazy, and losing Finnik).Katniss suffered the most if you add together everything that happened in the books (going into the games, losing Gale then prim) PLUS her fathers death and mother reaction to the death.
But in the series itself I think Peeta suffered the most (going into the games, loving a girl who didnt love him back, being hijacked, losing him family). but he also experianced the most joy and was the only person who was consistently happy through out the series, other than when he has hijacked.
Then there is Johanna, Prim, Finnick, Haymich, Cinna, the Prep team, Mrs everdean, Gale, Rue, and just about every one else in the whole series! including President Snow (yes, he did suffer even if every one hates to much to see it).
so anyways, I think it all depends on the perspective.
I think that Peeta suffered the most. Peeta almost died in the first arena, and then was wounded by Katniss when he found out she was just acting for the cameras. In the second book, he's thrown back in the arena and does everything to keep Katniss safe, but ends up losing her again. And who could forget the amount of torment he suffered in the third book. He was tortured and hijacked and when he was rescued, he didn't know who he was or who he loved. He was shut out by Katniss and left in a haze. But Prim, Katniss, and Haymitch suffered a lot too.
Christina wrote: "After thinking about it, besides all the character mentioned, think about Haymitch, he basically buried all his grief in drinking, never slept at night so he wouldn't re-live his memories, in the g..."I would never have said Haymitch but after reading this argument I agree. The character saw nothing but death and loss in the cruelest ways; years before Katiss or Peeta were even involved.
Yep, good shout with that one.
