I'm really enjoying this series. Sabina heads to NY to meet her sister and to learn about her magic half. Her demon familiar Giguhl is a definite hoot and a favorite character. This book was not quite as action packed as the first and was more of a setup for the next book.

Lis | 4037 comments Yay Dawn!

Vi, put me down for Spellbound Falls (Spellbound Falls #1) by Janet Chapman for my Magic shelf book.

I checked out the first couple of chapters of The Shadow Reader (McKenzie Lewis, #1) by Sandy Williams which was pretty good too. But busy week, I'm a sucker for Janet Chapman romance and its fluffy enough that it will require less thought.

Review: The second installation in the Hex Hall series is pretty good. There are more questions raised than answered. Lots of threads hanging around. We also get to see Sophie's dad who seems a pretty ok guy. Jenna and Sophie were a great pair :) Then came Cal - the betrothed and the obligatory love triangle. Can a YA not have a LT? The ending was mild cliff-hangery that I'm glad I have the next book on hand. I'll be reading it next.

Review: I enjoyed this book, although I will say up front I wish she would go with Dorian. I don't know why but I liked him. Maybe the next book will change my mind. It's about a shaman who finds out she is the daughter of the storm king and part of a prophecy. This prohecy is causing her all types of trouble, and I'm sure it will continue to do so in the next book. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it ;)

Lis | 4037 comments Yay Vi and Jennifer!

Almost there, over half way and the book is fluffy good. Just busy with pre-vacation prep and lack of me time to read.

Review:. Another great Chapman book. This story is about Olivia and her daughter who run and live at a camp that focuses on helping families bond & communicate. She as most of our heroines in this series is a widow who's husband was killed in the war. The small town makes him a hero, but no one knows that he was unfaithful and they were going to divorce when he returned. She lives with her domineering in-laws and has low self esteem but has a hidden passion buried inside just waiting to be unleashed. In comes our magical alpha male and his new son to solve all her problems and sweep her off her feet. This was a sweet family centric storyline that gives you all the warm and fuzzies from the wonderful but corny romance fluff that these books are formulated with. I love her characters, the humor, the heart tugging moments all thru to the sappy ending. Also found out there is another edition coming in June and several fav couples make an appearance.

Vi | 943 comments Wooho!! We're done with another shelf. I've put in the stamp request for the Magic shelf. All we have to do now is wait..

So what books have you all started?

message 514: by Lis (new)

Lis | 4037 comments Been doing more listening than reading... Got thru Fair Game (Alpha & Omega #3) by Patricia Briggs and By a Thread (Elemental Assassin, #6) by Jennifer Estep this week since I've been on the move and no time to sit still and read much. Back to my re-read via listen of Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander, #2) by Diana Gabaldon . Must be going thru my spring highlander man in kilt phase.

message 515: by Vi (new)

Vi | 943 comments Oh man, I need to start DiA. I'm having too many books on going now. The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson (which is depressing) and I still haven't finished I, Robot by Isaac Asimov and starting The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt .

message 516: by Lis (new)

Lis | 4037 comments Saw Gargoyle mentioned in another thread. Is it just fiction, pnr or UF?

message 517: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawn_e) | 185 comments Great job Divas! I started Shoot to Thrill (Passion For Danger, #1) by Nina Bruhns and listening to Conspiracy in Death (In Death, #8) by J.D. Robb . And I want to start the Elemental Assassin series just haven't got to it yet

message 518: by Lis (new)

Lis | 4037 comments I like the Elemental series. It's different and a unique storyline that I haven't come across yet and more UF with a little romance. Only negative is that she feels the need to explain in detail her main characters history, etc. each time and it becomes a little repetitive.

message 519: by Vi (new)

Vi | 943 comments Gargoyle is just fiction. Seems to have garnered so many reviews.

message 520: by Heather (new)

Heather (heathermb) | 132 comments I just finished Not Quite a Husband by Sherry Thomas which I thought was really good. If I were to try to pinpoint a sub-genre for this HR, I'd say travel-log as 90% of the book is the H/h making their way across India to head back to England. The book was rich in historical details and the landscape they pass over is very vivid. If you're looking for a heart-wrenching but oh-so-sweet HR, I highly recommend this book.

message 521: by Lis (new)

Lis | 4037 comments Sounds interesting Heather, thx. If you like historical fiction with a little romance, have you ever checked out Outlander? Its an older series but still getting a new book every three years. It's one of my all time favs and it has a pretty big fan base with its solely dedicated discussion group on GRs just for that series.

message 522: by Vi (new)

Vi | 943 comments Oh, I love Sherry Thomas. I've liked if not loved all of her books. Good one, Heather!

message 523: by Heather (new)

Heather (heathermb) | 132 comments Yeah, I always see people talking about those books. I'll probably get around to reading them eventually. I'm hesitant though, perhaps because my only foray into historical fiction was reading The Bastard and The Rebels in the Kent Family Chronicles. But by the end of The Rebels the MC's wife is abducted, beaten, and raped repeatedly before trying to overpower her captor, throwing them both overboard to drown. The rule of thumb in that series seemed to be that half the children were a product of rape and each character had to go through several traumas before a final trauma that would kill them before they're fifty.

message 541: by Vi (new)

Vi | 943 comments Oh no!! My TBR is going to increase now.

I've been meaning to get to her. Recommend me your favorite?

message 542: by Midu (new)

Midu Hadi | 1732 comments i enjoyed her books a lot but this was when i was younger. dunno if you'd love em now. I started with the first in the Tortall universe: Alanna The First Adventure (Song of the Lioness, #1) by Tamora Pierce but you should probably start with Trickster's Choice (Daughter of the Lioness, #1) by Tamora Pierce

message 543: by Heather (new)

Heather (heathermb) | 132 comments Drat, my Nook said 275 pages but oh well, I didn't notice the number of pages on the GR page. It was pretty good though Vi. With nine authors each doing a different chapter some parts were better than others but it did make my laugh out loud in a couple of places.

I suppose instead I'll read The Iron Duke (Iron Seas, #1) by Meljean Brook since I've been putting it off.

Review: I enjoyed this new author and world. The Fae war is on and McKenzie is in the middle, she is a rare human that has the "sight" to see fae and also track them as they flash out to the fae realm. The court Fae have used her for years to track rebels but when the rebels kidnap her, she must decide if she is working on the right side. As her world of right and wrong is blurred, so is her love for the Fae swordsman thats been her protector and a love triangle is formed. As fae battles fae, McKenzie battles feelings and tries to determine who's lying to her, who's deceiving her and who truly loves her. Pretty bloody fights and a lot of bodily damage, thank goodness those fae can heal. I will definitely continue with this series.

Review: I'd been meaning to read this book for a while and now that I have... It was pretty good. I enjoyed the action and was pleased that the romance portion developed slowly. Both Rhys and Mina were very interesting and I liked that you got to see a bit of why each is the way they are. If there was an annoyance though, it was the writing style. Brook seems to love the comma, especially in sentences that end with 'yes' or 'though' or 'then'; which is frequently the case. It kept jarring me and that detracted some from my enjoyment. The world-building, story-line and characters where fantastic though, so I'll read more most likely.

I've enjoyed the Warriors of Poseidon series and learning more about Christophe and his history especially as he wasn't my favorite character. Their was great chemistry between Christophe and Fiona and plenty of action. It was a good mix of hotness and funny parts while the plot twists and turns.

Review:Another good addition to the Dresden series. I enjoyed Dresden's narration in the book with snark and smart-ass comments at the right time. The world building as usual is top notch. We don't see Dresden as this super do-it-all guy but rather as a wizard who's still growing. It makes me so excited for the rest of the book. And I have a loooot of books in the series left! ;)
