I think sooner or later most writers hit a wall. There are rare the writers that can write for over 20 years and still come up with fresh stuff.

Steph (angel4492) | 32716 comments Short & Sweet review for latest shelf, then back to my midterms. Bleh! Almost done though! WOOHOO!!

City of Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #3) by Stacia Kane
Shelf: Reader's Choice
Read: 03 Apr
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
Review: I wanted to give this one 5★, but there were bits throughout that I really wanted to skim and I hate that! I didn't, but I did moan and groan until I got back to the good stuff. And, boy, oh boy, will Downside fans love the good stuff - 'cuz it's better than good ... it's ahhhh, make-ya-melt great! Oh yeah, and there was a seriously pain in the ass chick workin' with Chess, some seriously freaky munchins, a crazy dude battlin' against the "they're back" crazy group mixed in there too. ;) I jumped right into Sacrificial Magic (Downside Ghosts, #4) by Stacia Kane and LOVED it! I also req'd an ARC of Chasing Magic by Stacia Kane from NetGalley, which I'm sure I won't get, but had to try. Anyway ... LOVE the series! Will continue to read anything Kane creates in Downside b/c it's dark, gritty, and wicked good fun! A must-read series, IMHO!

Josie | 1967 comments Great review, Steph! I'm going to have to re-read CoG before I read Sacrificial Magic because I've completely forgotton what happens. (view spoiler) Good luck getting Chasing Magic!

Steph (angel4492) | 32716 comments I hear ya, DG! :D

Thanks, Josie! LOL! I forget a lot as well. That's actually from book 2; your spoiler. I'd definitely recommend re-reading #3 though, (view spoiler) I got denied by the publisher for the ARC, but kinda expected it. Still, would'a been sweeeet! Oh well. At least it's due this year.

Our next shelf is up! Goodreads-author Almost 4,000 bks listed, so TONS of options. I'll have to see if some of the ones I'm hot on starting right now are listed. I'd like to start Shadow's Fall or maybe A Perfect Blood. I know Dianne's a GR author, but don't think Kim is. I'll let ya know what I choose.

Hope everyone has a great weekend! :D

Title/Author: Seduced by a Spy by Andrea Pickens Seduced by a Spy by Andrea Pickens

Date Finished: April 6, 2012

Read for Shelf: Reader's choice

Rating: 4 stars

Review: Shannon is cooling her heels off, while her superiors decide what punishment she gets for disobeying orders. But what she doesn't know is that she will be getting an mission of her own. While on this mission, Shannon runs into a little friend. Alexandr Orlov is a lone wolf on yet another mission, but this time with a merlin. Shannon and Orlov don't get along, but that's just because the love each other. It takes them a while to figure out that they love each other and in that time they get to go to Ireland and Scotland. I would love to go to those places some day. In that time Shannon and Orlov will find out what it is to rely on someone other then themselves.

I don't know what I'm choosing for this shelf yet, maybe Bloodlines (Bloodlines, #1) by Richelle Mead just because I keep putting it off.

message 411: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments Here are the ones I'm considering for this shelf!

Most likely I'll pick one of the first two because they are print books from the library I just took out and I need to get started sooner rather than later. :)

Fade to Black
Grimspace
My Soul to Take
Daughter of the Forest
The Demon King
Lord of the Fading Lands
Unearthly

The Missing by Lisa McMann (UK version)

Title/Author: The Missing by Lisa McMann
Date finished: 9th April
Rating: ★★★1/2
Review: This is a quick read about a girl living in a small town, Cryer's Cross, where teens start to go missing.
Kendall, the main character, has OCD which was one of my favourite parts of the book actually, I thought it was portrayed really well and reminded me of when I had slight OCD when I was younger.
I like Lisa McMann's writing, it makes a nice change from the usual style I read (i.e. past tense, first person) and really keeps you in the moment.
I'm not sure if I loved the book. I think I liked it well enough. Was it a mystery? Romance? Meant to scare? Show small town life? OCD? It was the strangest mix of things and now finished, I'm not sure how I'm supposed to feel. Maybe I should have read it at night.

Juana "Darkness" Duran | 172 comments I'm finished, here is my review.

Title/Author: Destined by Allison Kraft Destined by Allison Kraft

Date Finished: 4/9/12

Read for Shelf: Goodreads Author

Rating: 5 Stars

Review: I loved this book so much,I wish Allsion Kraft would have made more like this one. I mean who doesn't like vampires and vampire slayers especially if it involves the Titanic. The Characters were amazing. Apolline is kicking but on the battle field and then all of a sudden she is plunged back in time to one of her ancestors bodies. And that is when she meets Alex Walker another vampire hunter like herself. They are both sent after the same vampire: Sasha. They find her and the vampire that has always tried to end Apolline's family in the same place. What better opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. But as they are in the Titanic time is kind of an issue. But Alex doesn't believe that the unsinkable ship is going to sink until it actually happens. And she is back in her own body in the present and she is crushed because Alex is not with her. Soon though Apolline works things out and she learns that opening her heart is not as hard the second time around.

The Darkest Seduction (Lords of the Underworld, #9) by Gena Showalter

Title: The Darkest Seduction by Gena Showalter
Read for: PNR-UF
Date: Apr 5th
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★
Review: This was sooooo awesome! I couldn't give it five stars because I felt like the 'big ending' was way to rushed and considering how much changed and happened there, it was a bit thrown together. However, I really loved Sienna in this one. She has jumped into the top three for my fav heroines in this series for sure. This was a surprise for me since she hadn't really been my cuppa in some of the others. Just goes to show how our mistress of LOTU can pull just about anything off.

Now that I have read this I am dying to read about Zacharel!

Review: I don't get to read non-fic that often (cause para is so much better, right?) but this was a great read! This was very likely the best book on budget savings that I have ever read. Easy to make changes and some super 'good sense' stuff. Even after working in the financial sector myself I find that some of these ideas were new to me or at least a fresh perspective. I have already put some into action. She was super funny too. I like a side of wise-ass with my money saving strategies thank you. ;)

Shadow's Fall (Shadow World, #3) by Dianne Sylvan
Shelf: Goodreads Author
Read: 11 Apr
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Review: David and Miranda are prepping for yet another Bastard Parade (as Miranda calls it). They're hosting the Signet Council, which meets every ten years. And, when the Bastards arrive, so does trouble! Miranda's still trying to balance life in the Daylight World w/her music career and the Shadow World, but Hart is over it. Three years have passed since the last book, (view spoiler) Deven and Jonathan, as well as Cora and Jacob are welcome faces. And, as always, Deven plays a big part in the events that occur throughout the Shadow World. When Faith meets Hart's Second, Jeremy, she knows there's more to him than he tells her. In fact, everyone is noticing a feeling that things are ... off.

The book ends with a MASSIVE cliffhanger. So, best hold off if you cannot handle the drop and subsequent waiting period between books. Thankfully, the final sentence in the book does offer some solace, though not much, for those who do decide to read it now and suffer the wait.

Lover Reborn (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #10) by J.R. Ward

Title: Lover Reborn by J.R. Ward
Read for: Goodreads author
Date: Apr 13th
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ½
Review: Oh thank you J.R. for this redeeming book! I was so mad at the mistress of BDB after her last book that I had made snide remarks to the cover of Lover Reborn and basically told it that it had some serious apologizing to do for its predecessor. Well. That was an awesome 'I'm Sorry'. I loved this story for many reasons. So many that I can't list them all. One that must be mentioned though is that in what must be her longest BDB book yet, she only uses the phrase shitkickers like twice. Whoot! This had lots of different stories going on and did a wonderful job of moving the overall series plot line along. I was really glad that she spent time on the big differences between Xhex and JM because they were destined for some rough roads and I'm glad that aspect wasn't ignored. The new developments with Assail and the progression with the B.o.B. is looking good as well. I'm definitely looking forward to what she puts out next. :)

Fade to Black (Black CATs, #1) by Leslie Parrish

Title/Author: Fade to Black by Leslie Parrish
Read for shelf: goodreads-author
Date finished: April 12
Rating: ★★★
Review:

This book had a lot of things going that I liked: a hero and heroine that acted like adults instead of whiny teenagers and real life law enforcement agents and were not clones from Dragnet. Then why didn’t I enjoy this book more?

I should first note that I’m not crazy about serial killer plots but Ms. Parrish handled some of those aspects were very well so this story wasn’t trite and preposterous: the killer never knew the FBI was in his trail and understood he would eventually be caught (there wasn’t a cackle of mad laughter at the FBI’s expense when they didn’t catch up to his evil genius.) However, the book still managed to be slow and plodding, which is the antithesis of what romantic suspense is supposed to be.

As I already mentioned, I really liked this couple. The hero was instantly attracted to the heroine but not only the physical...by her actions, he immediately learned a lot about her. I found it refreshing that he was attracted to her personality more than anything. The heroine on the other hand, was one of the best female law enforcement professionals I’ve seen in romance. She knew she was good and she wasn’t threatened by the FBI or anybody else. She was professional, smart, capable, level headed and confident in her abilities.

I can’t remember the last time I read about such a mature couple and it was really refreshing.

Overall, this book had some really good parts but others were somewhat sloppy. I’m not sure if I’ll continue the series because I like more intense suspense plots in my romantic suspense but if you are not interested in the mystery, then you may enjoy it more than I.

Isn't that the truth? Sometimes it feels like I am reading YA because the H/h are being such twits! Then of course I remember that most of my fav YA characters are more mature than that though and I'm just depressed. ;)

I ❤ vamps and shifters the mostest. So, I'll rummage through my books to see what I find. I'm reading a vamp book now, so may pick a shifter for the shelf. We'll see.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!
