:) Yay, Team! We're doing great on our stamps, unfortunately we don't seem to have the same luck some other teams have - our stamps aren't forming any kinda BINGO line (yet). LOL! Oh well, maybe Mr. Randomizer will be good to us soon.I think I'll read
for this (demons) shelf. I will probably pick something for my Free Space read this week as well. I'll let ya know which I choose.Happy Reading, Ladies! Hope everyone has a great weekend!
Steph - I recently got that book, also. Looking forward to seeing what you think. I almost picked it for this shelf.
Well, I can't decide whether to read
right now, or wait a few days so I can read
. Maybe I'll read for the free space and wait for my LOTU fix. I think Paris' last name is Campbell, cause he is....mmmm, mmmmm, good! ;P
Wow! You ladies really keep up with your series! I can't say I do as well...I'm always behind. :)I'll be reading either
or
for this shelf. I need to read the Dresden book by the end of February to fit a challenge I'm doing but I was afraid that was the only book I had in the paranormal mystery shelf so I was saving it...then I remembered that I also have the second one in ebook form! (I have SF in audio.)
I luuuuuuuvvvv Jim Butcher! Hope you enjoy him too if you go with The Dresden Files.I've only read the first of the Iron Druid books and really liked it. Was the second as good?
Oh yeah...the second one is even better, IMO. :) I haven't read this one because I was waiting until it was closer to the release day for
(the 4th book in the series.) But I think it's coming out in less than a month so I'm good to go with Hammered!
I really enjoyed the Otherkin series, Dana. Hope you will too. I am SO very excited for Paris' book! Come on, 28th! :D I still haven't started Harry yet. Hubby has read them all and loves the series too. I'd like to start Kevin Hearne's series this year; it just keeps getting trampled and pushed down my TBR list by other books.
I know what you mean about getting pushed down on my TBR list and it seems like it keeps growing every time I sign in. But that is what I love about Goodreads.
I'm so glad to hear that about
because another group I'm reading with is doing 'red covers' this week so that fits perfectly! Yeah for serendipity!!! There always seem to be those series that we just can't quite get to. Psy-Changelings(sp?) have been that for me. Everyone says they are awesome and I still haven't read them. I even signed up for the challenge and haven't started them yet. Of course, that is because my library (the entire district mind you) is out of the first book. All the copies are MIA and they hadn't reordered yet. Sooooo, I brought it to their attention and they have ordered copies of every book in the series. {insert small cheer here} However, that means I get to wait.....and wait.....and wait for my book. Argh! I refuse to buy the first one b/c then I will want to buy them all.
I haven't read Patricia Briggs Alpha and Omega series yet either, but she is touring in my neighborhood soon so that forces me to get a move on. Nothing like a little pressure to motivate, eh? :)
Here's what we have so far for this week. Yippee! (Demon books are kind of one of my favs...like a guilty pleasure. C= )BSB Week 4 (Feb 26 - Mar 3): demons
Completed: 5/5
D.G.: Hammered / Storm Front
Dana: Sins of the Heart
Josie: Chill Factor
Juana: The Darkest Seduction
Steph: Every Other Day

You're so lucky Dana, I'd love to read those 2 series again for the first time.
I'm so jealous (she is touring in my neighborhood soon)! I would love to meet her and some of my other fave authors. Hope you enjoy Otherkin, I thought it was a fun, dark, demon read.
Dana! You must start the Psy-Changeling series! It's one of the few series I'm up to date and the one that made me 'get' the PNR genre. Before that, I read several PNR books which I didn't like and I was wondering what was the deal with the genre. Then I read that one and the rest is history! The same with the Mercy Thompson series. Before that, I would roll my eyes at the covers of the woman in leather with tattoos and knives.
I started Storm Front. I'm still not sure I'll stick with it (I've just listened to a few minutes of the narration) but I'll post again once I'm sure. ;)
LOL! I will second that with a very loud, Here, Here! Psy-Changelings has SO much going on, in addition to the romance, that makes it one of the best PNR series out there. At least that I've read. And, Mercy … please, I love her and Kate Daniels. Two of my oldest and bestest book friends. ;)Finished my demon read. Review to follow tomorrow. Too sleepy to bother with it right now. Nite all.

I have really come to appreciate where I live and I am fortunate in that regard. Many authors tour right here to Portland, and many that don't go to Seattle which is about a 3 hour tour (hehe) from my house. Which makes it pretty shameful how many I haven't gone to see.
I got my mom hooked on Kim Harrison a few years ago and she is coming to town next week so we can go to her book signing. It is my mom's first so we should have a blast!

I had read all the books a couple times on my own before I listened to Storm Front so I already had ideas in my head which might be why I was so meh about Marsters. He was kind of monotone-ish. You won't have my prejudices though so I hope you enjoy it!
It is hard to let go of your own personal 'version' of characters and listen to them on audio or see them as cast characters in movies, isn't it?

It's like telling someone you have never eaten a cheeseburger or seen a television...people wonder how the climate is in your bubble. :)
Demons are one of my favorites too I can't get enough. Hence the pick for this shelf. Can't wait to start reading
I couldn't wait to get it on my kindle so I just baught it at the store instead.
Dana wrote: "It's like telling someone you have never eaten a cheeseburger or seen a television...people wonder how the climate is in your bubble. :) "LOL! You should have seen people's faces when I told them I've never had a milk shake! (I didn't grow up in the US.)
Yes, I find that when people have read a series already they have more problems getting used to the narration.
So we had this chat about Psy-Changelings and then I go into work and BAM! My co-worker has brought me her copy. YEAH!!!!I think that I will just go right ahead and make that my free space read. Yippee!
Jeesh though, now I have like 4 books to read this week. Hhhmmmmm.......oh well! ;P
Sweet! (Mom & Kim trip and Psy-C book) Enjoy both! I'll be back soon w/my 'demons' review. LOL Juana ~ I've done the same before ... impatience we definitely have in common. Enjoy! Can't wait for your review and my chance to read it as well.
Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn BarnesMy rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
Shelf: Demons
Read: 2/27/12
Review: The first series I read by Jennifer Lynn Barnes was Raised by Wolves. In that series, she impressed me with her strong, young heroine and unique take on a old tale about were packs. In that story the heroine is a human who has been raised among a pack of werewolves.
In Every Other Day, she continues her trend of strong, young heroines who do the best they can to deal with their fate. In this story, that girl is Kali D'Angelo, a teenager who every other day is a somewhat typical teenager who has problems relating to her dad and avoids forming friendships. She avoids friendships because every other day she is a demon hunter. On those days, she is no longer a weak, meek, human girl, but something other, something stronger, without pain or fear. In her world, the paranormal is normal. Creatures such as hellhounds and zombies are not a myth, but reality. She kills them to protect others. She's been doing so since she was 12 years old, but doesn't know exactly what she is. That is only one of the questions she hopes to answer.
The story is full of fast-paced action, wild creatures, conspiracies and mysteries. There are instances when I felt the author could have explained a bit more, but I know she enjoys having the readers guess and figure things out along with the characters in her story. Though I didn't feel an instant connection between Kali and her would-be beau, Zev, I was intrigued by him. The ending of this book left a lot of questions. It felt a bit rushed, but I'm hoping the existence of those questions means there will more books, making this a series, so that we can discover how things progress. (Full Rating: 3.5★)
My full review
Great review, Steph!Enjoy Psy-Changeling, Dana - I'm not a huge fan of PNR but that series is an absolute fave. I also really liked Sins of the Heart so you've got some good books lined up! I completely understand what you're saying about audiobooks, it must be almost like watching a film after reading the book, you've established the characters, what they look like, sound like, act like etc already so it must be weird. Luckily I've never read The Dresden Files so I'm really enjoying listening to the books. I'm only on the second but I love James Marsters narrating it, particularly when he does Bob and Chancey (spelling? I've only heard the name lol).
I've finished my book for demons. Review in next post :)
Title/Author: Chill Factor by Rachel Caine
Date finished: 29th February
Rating: ★★★★
Review: I much prefer this series to the Morganville Vampires. Maybe I'm a nerd but I like all weather-earth-fire stuff, it adds a very cool sci-fi feel to the UF book.
Many players, each as interesting as the next, and of course, each with their own agenda. Furthermore, as expected with Rachel Caine, lots of jaw-dropping moments, and times where you want fly kick people in the face. You really feel Joanne's fustration and then within a page, you change your opinion of said people. I'm always amazed though that she's not dead yet, the amount of damage/abuse she's sustained. Loving this series so I'm really looking forward to the next one.
I'm quite tired so I'll be surprised if any of the review makes sense. As you can probably tell sentences were sacrificed. Hope everyone's having a good reading week though! :)
Thanks, Josie. fly kick people in the face LOL!! Sleep well. :) I haven't started that series yet; glad to see you are enjoying it.
Actually, I think I know what Dana means with Marsters being a bit monotonish. He also does a lot of sighing when the story doesn't ask for it and sometimes he slightly changes the words - I was reading along with the book and I noticed.I don't think I'll be continuing the series in audio.
That's exactly it! It's like he does all his work on this in the first 30 minutes of each day before he gets out of bed. He has that, "Hhmmph? Eh? Good morning, ehm...I'm Harry Dresden and I am a wizard." thing going on. It can be distracting...still good, but distracting. :)
LMAO Josie!I swear, next time someone makes me really mad [insert my internet provider's name here] I am totally going to be visualizing fly kicking them in the face! Too funny. C=
Yeah *blushes* I've been watching a lot of Buffy, can you tell lol?I reckon you'll like them, Steph! ;)
He does sigh loads! He definitely has the whole world weary thing covered lol.
I never really watched Buffy. I was an Angel fan though. ;)Yeah, I've got the series on my TBR list. Just kinda low on there.
Ooh I'm def a Spike fan myself ;) I'm going through them properly, on season 3 so far, loving them!Yeah, I'm with you there, so many books... my TBR list is out of control!
Steph, how could you not watch Buffy??????? I'm definitely a Spike fan too Josie. I've got them all on DVD.
And I was sad the way they ended the Angel spinoff. And WTF did they do to Cordelia & Fred!!!!!!!
Yeah, I'm surprised that you've never watched them Steph, I feel that they're something you'd like. Peer pressure may be heading your way... :PSandra, I didn't ever watch the Angel spinoff and not sure I'd really want to. As good as Buffy do you think?
Oh no! Something happens to Cordy? I love her! It doesn't really surprise me though, we said that we couldn't remember seeing her in the later series (I was under 10 when I watched them so I have an excuse lol which is why I'm going through them all now). And I'm not sure who Fred is yet but I'm looking forward to meeting him :)
Fred is a her. LOL. And both my comments of Cordelia & Fred refer to Angel. Cordy went to LA? & ended up working for Angel, that's why she wasn't in the later Buffy eps.I think it is definitely as good as Buffy, they are both Joss Whedon afterall.
Oh & peer pressure will surely be coming Steph's way. LOL
Never watched Buffy and I don't want to, LOL! But then, I don't watch that much TV.No wonder it took me a while to get into the whole PNR genre! :)
Well, to show my solidarity to my teammate Steph, I will admit that I have not watched any Buffy as well. It was the whole reason I tried the audio Butcher books in the first place. Everyone was gushing about Marsters on these things...I think that might have more to do with Buffy lovers being faithful to him than it does with his performance on the books. (He is a cutie though so I could imagine why. C= ) My hubby loves Buffy though and says it is great. He commented once on how I read all this vamp fiction and then won't watch the TV shows. I think I just like the version of my PNR heroes in my head better than what they could ever come up with on TV. For instance, could anyone ever actually cast Barrons? NOT!!! Barrons in my head is like one of the sexiest men 'alive'! Brad Pitt and Bradley Cooper can just step aside...cause Jericho Barrons is comin' through! ;P
Dana wrote: "Everyone was gushing about Marsters on these things...I think that might have more to do with Buffy lovers being faithful to him than it does with his performance on the books. "I think I agree with you, Dana. Of course, he may have gotten better as the books move along but for this first book, he's average at best. His voices are not distinctive enough (sometimes I can't tell if it's Dresden or somebody else speaking), he has problems pacing his breathing, sometimes he portrays the wrong emotion and he fibs some lines.
LOL! Nope, not gonna do it. I just don't care much for SMG. Although, I have to say that Ringer, her newest show is growing on me. Mainly b/c of all the twists and turns. But, she's the main reason we never watched Buffy. I did love Angel though. I'm typically a fan of everything done by Joss Whedon. Love him! I saw Spike in some Angel eps.
SHELF: Demons
Title/Author: Storm Front by Jim Butcher

Review: I really enjoyed the premise of this book and although Dresden got on my nerves sometimes (he seems to think he's responsible for everything and doesn't give himself some credit), I liked him well enough that I'm giving him a second chance.
I don't think I'm continuing this series in audio though. Maybe James Marsters has gotten better as the books move along but for this first book, he was average at best. His voices are not distinctive enough (sometimes I can't tell if it's Dresden or somebody else speaking), he had problems pacing his breathing, sometimes he portrayed the wrong emotion and he fibbed some lines (I read along with the ebook for parts of the book when I wasn't sure I was going to stick with the audio.)
So although I can't say this one was great, it was good enough that I'm definitely continuing the series.
