Question about group newsletters

I haven't been a member for long. Is it customary for this group to send out monthly newsletters directly to members? If it is then I'm afraid I need to leave this group. Don't want my inbox full of unwanted messages. :/

This is Sammy, I am one of the moderators. I am sorry you received the newsletter when you did not want it. Unfortunately at goodreads--(not our policy, but honestly the way the entire site is set up) we cannot select who we send group messages to--so our choices are limited to sending none or sending to the entire membership. Because we are interested in growing the group's membership we decided to begin a monthly newsletter letting everyone know about upcoming events like the author of the month, etc.
So all that info to say, that yes for the foreseeable future we intend to send out monthly newsletters. I sincerely hope that you can simply delete the pm rather than feeling you need to leave the group. Please feel free to pm me privately if you'd like to discuss this more. Thanks!
HI Laura, Sorry you feel that the newsletters are that bad. It's important to let people know what is going on in the group.. otherwise it ceases to be a group..I try to keep the number of emails to the group down to no more than 1 or 2 a month. I know I don't want to waste time writing them if people feel they are a waste of time, but at this point trying to let people know what's happening if they don't have time to read the group everyday is important.
Like Sammy said your welcome to delete the messages with out reading, or alternatively you can leave the group if it's that annoying..

but it's a great way to communicate and I think you do a great job Byron--thank you for doing it!
Every group I'm in does this (some more than once a month) and I appreciate the heads-up (often there's something I've missed.) Once a month seems like the right frequency to me.
I'm not a huge fan of the newsletters, but a long as they're kept to a minimum, I can deal with them. The adult group is really starting to get on my nerves with how often it sends out group messages now.
I think once a month is fine; any more than that, unless it's a special event or time-sensitive information, gets a bit excessive. I can definitely understand a once a month newsletter because otherwise something might be missed.
Personally I love the newsletter, especially this past one. I'm new to the group and hadn't had the time to check out everything yet, and it let me know about the polls and things like that. I probably wouldn't have found them until much later had it not been for the newsletter. Some groups are overbearing with their newsletters, but I think once or twice a month is good if the group has a lot going on.
I have no problem with the newsletters at all. It makes sure I haven't missed anything in my general browing of the different groups I'm on. I don't think any group just sends them out for no reason...it does take time to write them, so no mod of any group would do it 'just because'!
I like receiving newsletters. I figure when I join a group I'll get newsletter an I'm totally ok with that. It ensures I don't miss anything.
Laura To stop receiving emails from Goodreads, you need to change your profile info.
To do so:
> click the arrow beside your avatar on the Goodreads bar above
> click Profile
> click email tab
> scroll to Group Email Preferences
> click the none button
> click the Save email settings button at bottom of page
This action should stop all emails including the newsletter. Let me know at the end of February.

That stops Goodreads from emailing you any private message, doesn't stop groups from flooding your inbox with newsletters.
