Rhonda definitely!

Aijah I loved this book!! It would be an amazing movie, definitely better than the Harry Potter movies. I hope they make it into a movie.

Nikki I have mixed feelings about this book being turned into a movie. In my mind it would *have* to be a sweeping epic-like movie, much like Lord of the Rings, so even comparing it to Harry Potter is wrong to me. And I worry about what would be left out and the pace of the movie considering how much of the book is spent traveling and as internal character development. :Shrugs: Just my opinion.

I totally agree with you! But I think that Harry Potter and this book is in a whole league of its own :)

Chris It's about a range of tones, I think. The HP movies, while becoming very dark indeed, began with lots of fun and whimsy, with some of the lighter elements (the Weasley twins for example) re-appearing throughout the series to leaven the serious stuff. Similarly, LOTR began with lots of light stuff (hobbits generally), and Merry and Pippin (and occasionally Gollum) gave us snatches of humour throughout the trilogy.

The Pellinor books, however, have (with the possible exception of Irk) precious little moments of humour, just a few oases of calm to contrast with the unmitigating doom and danger. As a film series the Pellinor sequence would have to jump in at the deep end, and comparing to HP or even LOTR is a little misleading, I think.

Michelle YES IT WOULD!

Jax I have to agree about the mixed feelings....
though to compare HP is a little unfair...
As it would depend entirely on the directors and producers.... Say if Peter Jackson were to get involved... maybe then.... But I don't know if they'd capture it on film as well as my imagination did....

And so far they've been doing a pretty poor job on the book to movie front - LOTR notwithstanding....
HP and Twilight are prime examples of this!!!

I think on this, I'll stick with my imagination.... :-)

EXACTLY!

Chris Jax wrote: "I don't know if they'd capture it on film as well as my imagination did...."

This thing about imagination is really crucial, I think. The author paints pictures with words and imbues characters with personalities through reporting their words. The reader is expected to read every one of those words, consider them and recreate that world almost as a simulacrum (sorry about the pretentious terms here!).

The problem with movies is that writers often interpret the words, edit the speeches, cut out or re-arrange scenes, create new characters or merge others. That's before they re-envision the book, perhaps transplanting it to a different time or place. Then the director and producers come along and add their own visions, actors come along and act, costs come along and dictate their terms.

Unless you are a director like Jackson or a writer like Rowling who can impose your will to create consistency or insist on your original creativity, the result (like 'The Golden Compass') can be a dreadful mishmash.

And so it could be with Pellinor. I have my images of the characters from the British edition of the books which have objects not characters as cover pics. (Actually this is common in British editions of fantasy classics, as with 'His Dark Materials', the Abhorsen series and the adult covers of the HP books.) If you've got an image of your favourite character, an actor who doesn't quite match it can be a terrible disappointment.

And which bits of each book are you happy to have cut out because the book's length won't fit into a feature film? You can see why I'm leery about Pellinor migrating to the screen.

Jax I think you've summed it up pretty well Chris!

Though I will admit that I enjoy a good chat about which actors would possibly be able to portray certain characters! :D
Back before the ruins of HP and Twilight, I had high hopes for a few of my books to make it to the big screen - now... Not so much! lol
Perhaps if they could get the budget - a series... but movies - they'd have to take out too much!

Zachary Loved the book i hope it wont get turned into a movie !!

Zachary jax try not to take offense but in my opinion Harry Potter and Twilight were on borrowed time the moment they were published, I will be spitting mad if in 10 or so years thay are called classics.

Ohh, I'd take offence if I were you, Jax! What's your definition of 'classic' Zachary? (This has the makings of a longer discussion...)

Jax LOL - Depends on what I'm supposed to be offended about...
But I'm gonna have to agree with Chris on this one...
Define your version of a classic...

But to be honest - I'd also be hacked if Twilight (the movie) gets tagged a "classic"...
The book - I could possibly let slide... I recently suffered my way through Jane Austen's Emma - and if that can get labelled a Classic - I honestly cannot find a valid reason why Twilight shouldn't.

The HP series - maybe a children's Classic... but not adult - WAAAYYY too many other awesome novels come before it does! :D

Clare As much as I love this book (and series) I would not go see it, if it was made into a movie.
I have made this world up in my mind about how I think Annar and the Seven Kingdoms would look, even how the different characters would look and I feel a movie woulf just shatter my illusions! I dont even like it when authors release pictures of how the characters are meant to look, cos they always look way different to how I imagined them

Most of the movies I have seen have ruined the books they are based on for me.

Ruby I adored this series, these four books are some of the best that I've ever read. However, I am against making it into a movie, because I believe that they would mess it all up, and everyone wouldn't bother to read the books, which would be definitely better, because they are so big. So PLEASE don't beg for this to be made into a movie, because I know it would stink.

Adrienne Cooley As far as the comparison to HP, I would argue that Pellinor is far better in regard to quality of writing, complexity, imagery, and more. Although one muse keep in mind that they were written for entirely different audiences. As far as a movie, I would say that the HP movies are closer to the books than Pellinor movies would be if they were made. The Pellinor books are amazing and I cannot imagine that a movie could do them justice.

I agree. It feels like it would have to be a more Lord of the Ringish type movie. Which makes it hard to even compare to HP.
