Jed (specklebang) | 109 comments About 15 years ago I read a book that had a very deadly, smart female ship captain (piratish - criminalish)) who could maneuver between universes. I think it was an obscure author. That's all I remember except I want to read it again. Anybody recognize this?

Also, any other suggestions for parallel universe books (not alternate, but parallel). A great example is:Crosstime Traffic

Suggestions appreciated. YA or adult.

Dan Schwent (akagunslinger) Sorry, that was a suggestion. I should have made that clear.

Jed (specklebang) | 109 comments Thanks. That looks very interesting and contemporary. I prefer modern writing to the early classics.

Experiment BL626 | 31 comments Wow, I want to read that book you're asking people to identify. Won't someone please identify it?

For suggestion, try Planesrunner (Everness #1) by Ian McDonald — a bit of steampunk too.

A.R. Davis (drardavis) | 8 comments Since Jed asked ... my second book would qualify, Time Travelers Are Schizophrenic. Info is on my dashboard.

I didn't come here to promote, I was looking for suggestions. But the thread is too new. :-)

Jed (specklebang) | 109 comments If you want to promote your book, that's fine by me but the description on Amazon is pretty uninformative and unexciting and you don't offer samples. Maybe you should consider a more extended description?

message 8: by A.R. (new)

A.R. Davis (drardavis) | 8 comments I'm sorry you didn't like the description. As an author I didn't want to include any "spoilers" in the description. "Unexciting" ... omg! Well, the book is not a space opera. It is more concerned with following the logic of what would be necessary psychologically if a time traveler were to meet himself. Lots of physics involved too, and genealogy.

However, about the samples ... You can read inside the book if you look at the Kindle edition. I didn't realize Amazon required the author to take a number of extra steps to get the samples on the paperback versions. Thanks for pointing that out.

Jed (specklebang) | 109 comments My mistake. The Kindle page indeed offers the sample which I just ordered.

Do you maybe mean the Honor Harrington books? It's been a long time, but she was quite a space captain and I think they traveled by jumping into paralell dimentions or something. Here's the first book:On Basilisk Station

Even if that's not it, now I want to read it again.

Jed (specklebang) | 109 comments You know what - that might be it despite my memory of an obscure female author as opposed to Weber, whose stuff I never read. I just ordered a used copy and I'll find out for sure. Thanks!

Still, I'd like to keep this thread alive for suggestions or possible alternatives.

message 12: by Jed (new)

Jed (specklebang) | 109 comments I just read the Kindle sample and your book seems much more interesting than the description. Just saying....[-)

Ravi Veloo (RaviVeloo) | 8 comments Hi Jed, I've read a lot of sci fi but can't say I can recall that storyline. But since you asked about other books, try Radio Multiverse - First Contact.

Cool. If you think of it, let me know if that was the one you were thinking of. I like to know when my guesses are right. =)

message 15: by Jed (new)

Jed (specklebang) | 109 comments Nope. It's not the Honor Harrington book. Darn it.

Oh well, I sure wish I could find it again. I've learned not to lend books to people because I almost never get them back. Now I keep a database but that came after.

Anybody? Female criminal & parallel universes?

message 16: by Phil (new)

Phil (notacat) | 11 comments I wonder if you're thinking of Skeen's Leap ?

message 17: by Karen (new)

Karen (seaayre) | 12 comments Skeen was great. :) Actually, I loved a lot of Jo Clayton's stuff. RIP, Jo.

message 18: by Jed (new)

Jed (specklebang) | 109 comments That just might be it. I sure hope so. I'm ordering a copy today. Thank you, I almost gave up on this thread.

message 19: by Jed (new)

Jed (specklebang) | 109 comments I've ordered Skeen and the date seems right BUT I remember I had a hardcover and Skeen seems to be in paperback only. So, maybe, maybe not. If Skeen is it, I'll repost to this thread otherwise, please keep thinking.....
