Lianne (eclecticreading) Hi everyone! I was just thinking the other day: does anyone know of any authors who were contemporary to Jane Austen and were also publishing at the same time as she was? For example, we know that Charlotte Bronte, Elizabeth Gaskell and Charles Dickens were more or less writing around the same time as each other. I was just wondering who was writing around the same time as Jane Austen; I'd be curious to check out their works =)

Ann Radcliffe (whom Austen allegedly didn't care for) and Fanny Burney and Maria Edgeworth (whose work she did like). Mary Wollstonecraft was also a contemporary.

Lianne (eclecticreading) Thanks! lol, it looks like I did get around to Radcliffe's works a bit after it was mentioned in Northanger Abbey but I've only heard of Fanny Burney in passing.

Bill (bill_bee) | 81 comments Fanny Burney has a very interesting history. She was born before Jane and outlived her. She survived breast cancer by having one of her breasts removed without anesthesia. She wrote quite a few books. Evalina is most famous I think. - Bill.
