Alessandra | 108 comments The other day I started a list, http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/16... . I noticed that someone put their own book on it, and I realized that I hadn't said anything about not doing that, mainly because it hadn't occurred to me that people would (I think I was naive about that).

I notice there is a link on the edit the list page which says "remove particular books."

Would it be acceptable for me to delete that book and add a note in the description asking people not to add books they are responsible for to the list?

Alessandra | 108 comments Actually I've been wondering. Is it unfair to ask people not to put their own books on the list?

Kim (catmommie) | 82 comments Not sure, since Listopia is public, it does say "anyone can add a book."

Jennifer (jennifermstoner) | 12 comments If you want to create a list you have complete control over, perhaps you want to use the bookshelf feature.

Because lists are publicly editable, the ability to remove books is probably best used to take books off that are clearly not appropriate. For example, if the list was "Wordless Books," remove any Harry Potter books that make their way onto it, but not a wordless book you didn't like.

That said, I would love a way for list creators to be able to have such limiting control over their lists, like a public versus private option when you create them. Am I missing something?

Alessandra | 108 comments (Responding to comment #3) Well, sure, but I have seen lists where people put restrictions on what can be listed, things like "this is for histories, not historical fiction." Anyone may add a book, but they can't add just any book.

I'm just wondering, is it acceptable to ask that people not put their own books up, or is it needlessly hard-nosed?

Jennifer (jennifermstoner) | 12 comments I think the way you have done it is good, and then step back from active "curation". Some people will ignore your request, but hopefully those titles that don't deserve to be there will, with more votes, sift down to the bottom of the list.

Great idea for a list, by the way!

Alessandra | 108 comments Okay, I will let it be. Thanks for the advice.

And thanks. I'm an artist, and I appreciate well-done design work.

Kim (catmommie) | 82 comments You can revise the name to say , "Alessandra's..." to discourage additions. Not sure how much it will help, but it's a thought.

Alessandra | 108 comments Oh, but I don't want to discourage additions. The more the more interesting. I just didn't want to encourage self-promotion on this list.

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments I think it is acceptable to state that in the description may not stop people but.....
