The Best of Me
question
Amanda`s self blame and pity

This book disappointed me, I was very excited reading this but I felt that the author did`nt capture the essence of his previous novels. Did anyone feel sorry for Amanda? I fail to see her sympathetic, she was basically having an affair, and tried to use her husband drunken ways as an excuse to revive her days with Dawson. I just thought that she should have worked on her relationship with Frank, and stop trying to hang on to both men.
Am I the only one that did not relate to her character?

I agree that Frank's drunkenness is no excuse for the affair and she was wrong for having one. But remember it takes two to make a marriage work. Frank was no longer there for her emotionally, and because of the drunkenness I doubt that he was there for her mentally and physically. From what I could tell she made a honest attempt to make the marriage work and kept encouraging Frank to get help. If it wasn't for the near death of his b/c of his drunkenness he would still be drinking. What she should have done was tell Dawson that before they do anything that she has to get divorced & wait until its finalized and they could rekindle the flame.
I agree in a sense that I didn't really like Amanda all that much throughout the book. However, it was for a different reason. I just felt that she was settling for Frank instead of going after what she really wanted...Dawson! She didn't seem to have much backbone and standing up for what SHE wants. First with her parents and then with Frank. Especially with Frank. I get that their child died, but Frank didn't want to put his life back together and move forward one step at a time like Amanda did. Amanda just let him go on like that for several years and let herself be miserable for no good reason. I don't care if you have children. Unless the judge declares otherwise your kids can still see their dad even if you two are divorced. Even when Frank was drunk, Amanda still seemed like she was settling for second best even though she was unhappy. Sorry if this seemed like a rant, just my two cents.
