We meet the neighbors at the visitation for Mark's Mom. Quite a dysfunctional lot, the owner of the creepy house behind Mark's is revealed to be Joseph Kalendar; and he still exerts influence on the neighborhood. That influence or something compels Mark into the house to see what frightens him so much. Creepy!!!
How could the Kalendar house become invisible to so many people over the years, and then suddenly start to reveal itself to Mark and even to some extent, to Jimbo? And why - what caused the rip in the fabric? Perhaps with the audio book I missed a clue as to the catalyst. Certainly Mark's Mother's awareness of the little girl and who she was, and how she had ignored her need for rescue from Kalendar were the beginning of the changes in the Underhill home.
I don't think you missed a distinct catalyst, Ann. It does seem like it started when she saw the little girl.
Can you imagine being related to a serial killer??? That would certainly mess with your mind.

and on top of that to have a husband like Phillip! Debra wrote: "Can you imagine being related to a serial killer??? That would certainly mess with your mind. "
I loved how Jimbo finally rallied to Mark's interest in the house. First he showed no interest at all, then he seemed to offer never ending support.
He didn't seem to have the same obsession of the house as Mark did. Do you think the house swayed him, or was he just being a loyal friend?

Boy, does the house seem creepy, now that I've gotten the first view inside. I can feel the spider webs as I run out the door.
I would be running out the door too, Almeta!Jimbo's friendship was important to Mark, and vice versa; they were obviously close friends, but I didn't expect him to catapult and go into the house with Mark, or participate like he did. Friendship goes far at that age over reason I guess.
Mark was quite was quite good at persuading Jimbo to join in on solving the mystery of the house. I'm with Jimbo, though... I'd have preferred doing my work OUTSIDE that creepy house!
