Any recommendations for a book with a Character that is mentally or physically handicapped. I have drawn a blank. I also need recommendations for a new author?

message 805: by Jon (new)

Jon Hi Emilee

I did 'The Bell Jar' - Sylvia Plath, for mental illness/handicap - hoping depression counts - lord knows it should, you should see my Mum right now shes in a phychiatric ward because of it.

and the Guernsey potato peel book is a first author

message 806: by Elizabeth (NC) (new)

Elizabeth (NC) | 209 comments Emilee wrote: "Any recommendations for a book with a Character that is mentally or physically handicapped. I have drawn a blank. I also need recommendations for a new author?

Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime should count--the narrator has autism. Also, A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving is really good and should count as a physical handicap. I'm not sure they ever say exactly what Owen Meany has, but his very small stature is central to the book.

message 807: by Amanda A (new)

Amanda A 10 POINT TASK

4. For Valentine’s Day: Read a Book with the Word Love, Romance, Kiss, Valentine, Cupid, Sweetheart or Heart in the Title.

Heartsick by Chelsea Cain

Total: 45 points

message 808: by Darla (new)

Darla (sylvanfox) | 573 comments Jon, I read "The Bell Jar" for the same challenge. Cynthia said early on in the thread that depression and the works would be accepted under the umbrella of 'mental illness. It's a wonderful book if you've never read it before. :)

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments Emilee wrote: "Any recommendations for a book with a Character that is mentally or physically handicapped. I have drawn a blank. I also need recommendations for a new author?

Emilee - Look Me In The Eye by John Elder Robinson would work. He has Asperger's Syndrome. It's on my TBR shelf and has been recommended to me by a couple of people. He's the brother of Augusten Burroughs.

message 810: by Jamie (last edited Dec 28, 2008 04:53PM) (new)

Jamie Emilee - One of my favorite YA books would fit for the "character that is mentally or physically handicapped" challenge - Pictures of Hollis Woods - since one of the main characters has Alzheimer's. It's definitely a quick read, and very moving.

message 811: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Sybil or Girl Interrupted should work Emilee.

message 812: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Or The Notebook, if Alzheimers is permitted.

Mind you ive probably got more than enough books allready!

I have a book on my to-read list about flying. I haven't read it yet so I can't personally vouch for it but it's called Dear American Airlines by Jonathon Miles and I heard it was good. My mom is an flight attendant and her friend wrote a book called A Trace Element and his name is John Ritter. I have already read that and I liked it. Pretty quick and I was kept interested.
I have another one too but can't find it among all these books or I'd mention the title and author of it also. If I come across it I'll definitely let you know. The Jonathon Miles books is pretty well talked about on some other sites I go to.

message 816: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Jon wrote: "Who knows of a book involving someone in the Travel profession? I work for a travel agency."

I had that same problem! Even with recommendations, I probably still won't be able to fit that in, since I am working only with books I already have.

message 817: by Darla (new)

Darla (sylvanfox) | 573 comments What's Eating Gilbert Grape is a good one for the mentally/physically handicapped challenge. Gilbert's brother, Arnie, is Mentally Retarded and his mother is morbidly obese. Both of these characters would be considered main characters.

message 818: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Jon - here are 3 books I found that are about travel agents

Frankly My Dear, I'm Dead BY Livia J. Washburn

Family Baggage: A Novel BY Monica McInerney

Playing in the Light: A Novel BY Zoe Wicomb

message 819: by El (new)

El Cynthia, can you come up with anything for a profession as a medical secretary? Administrative assistant (in a doctor's office) could also pass.

message 820: by Lizzy (new)

Try Maddy Hunter's Passport to Peril Mystery series, the narrator girl is a tour group manager or sth. like that. Can be used for series and mystery challenges too. And all the countries challenges as well.

Thanks Becky and Angela :) the typo is really confusing. And thank you too, Cynthia. :)

message 834: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Ann from SC - it's written by a Danish author but I'm not sure that it actually takes place in Denmark if it does then yes you can use the little mermaid for that task.

Jeane - again YES Girl with a Pearl earring counts and the Donna Leon books count for the mystery task

Katie - there isn't another one on the board but I'll use KT if you like - just be sure to say your KT when you post points so if another Katie joins I can keep it straight.

That's funny because I was just thinking the same thing. I noticed some people asking questions (I'm new here) and was thinking I'll probably have to do the same thing. I was wondering if it was one person who coordinated everything. Wow. LOL
