I too loved Water for Elephants. Read it before the DVD came from Netflix. As usual, I enjoyed the book more.

message 259: by Tash (new)

Tash Dahling (misstash) Hi all, group newbie here. Have just started reading Barbara Kingsolvers newest - Flight Behaviour, but so far I'm not loving it, so I think I'll start "I am Legend" which I've been wanting to read for forever!

message 260: by Melinda (new)

Melinda (cerise01) | 1 comments I'm reading Looking for Alaska now. Really enjoy it so far.

message 261: by David (new)

David W. | 9 comments I just finished reading:
"The House at Riverton" by Kate Morton. I recommend it. The story is well framed as told by a woman in her nineties who served as a maid during the WWI era. I was raised by my grandparents who lived through the late Victorian period and the story seems quite authentic and it is very well written.
"14" by Peter Cline. It is an intriguing book if you like a mixture between quasi-thriller and sci-fi. The characters are a motley bunch and the situation is tense at times. Cline maintains a high level of suspense throughout most of the story.
"A Salty Piece of Land" by Jimmy Buffet. Buffet mixes his usual cast of off-beat characters into a fast-moving set of circumstances that prove all we're looking for is a tiny slice of the good life for a little while.
"Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn. In spite of the rave reviews, I found this book a little tedious and became so tired of Amy's games that I was ready to hunt her down and kill her myself.

Hi... I am so glad to hear that somebody else didn't like Gone Girl! I didn't like a single character in that book. I don't understand how this book got the reviews and hype that it did. Your description of 14 sounds interesting. I will look for that book. I just finished, THE DINNER by Herman Koch. I don't know how to describe whether I liked this book or not but I can't stop thinking about it.

message 264: by Pam (new)

Pam Happy to hear there are a few others that did not enjoy Gone Girl! What a waste of two lives.

message 265: by Stephanie (new)

That book was next in line for my "want to read"...So it's not all that it's cracked up to be?

message 267: by David (new)

David W. | 9 comments Just finished "The Shadow Woman" by Linda Howard. It has an excellent plot premise (woman has memory erased to hide big secret), some good plot points and some good action scenes. The extended and juvenile sex scenes slow the book down in stretches. (Too often for my taste) However, it is an overall good read that starts really well, but ends somewhat lamely. About three and a quarter stars in my opinion.

message 268: by David (new)

David W. | 9 comments Hi Heather

I liked Shadow of the Wind by Zafon and have recommended it to two of my friends, who also enjoyed it. I will be interested in your opinion.

David W. | 9 comments I am reading blue highways by William Least Half-Moon. The author is a master of description and has the courage to go into many offbeat places to find unusual people and events in remote areas of America. It's an excellent read that you can skip around within or read for some time, put it down and come back. I would recommend it to anyone interested in backwoods Americana.

message 276: by May (new)

message 286: by Mercie (new)

Mercie (acatcalledmartha) I'm about half-way through My Ántonia. I like it so far but I understand now what I had heard about a 'lack of plot.'

message 287: by Monique (new)

Monique Durant-taxprof | 1 comments Mercedes, I read My Antonia years ago and remember it fondly as an uplifting story. The plot is not strong, but I saw it as a relatable story similar to A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith or Christie by Catherine Marshall. Each was inspirational in its own way and made great summer reading for me as a young woman. For a novel with 'no plot' you might try "Mrs. Dalloway" - the only book I ever lost patience with and tossed across a room - good thing it was a paperback!

message 288: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (goodgurrl) | 12 comments I'm reading Gilead. I like the parts where he talks about his son the best, since I have a seven year old also.

Its good so far you get both perspectives - the sons and the mothers.

message 300: by Sangita (new)

Sangita Mazumder (sangitamazumder) | 3 comments Reading The Unicorn by Iris Murdoch. It's kind of compelling, keeps you bound to read until the end, a bit gothic and dark. Almost like a dark version of Sleeping Beauty.
