S.L. Wallace I absolutely love it! I first read it when I was in, oh maybe 6th grade. I remember checking it out from the public library. The sequel, Zia, wasn't as good, in my opinion.

I've since used it as a book group with my upper elementary students, and one year, I read it aloud to a class. I remember, at one point a boy in my class yelled, "This is the best book ever!"

message 52: by Mea (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mea I had to drag my self though this book in 6th grade I refuse to give this book like two stars because as a writer I know that writing book is not easy even when you love to write. I really did not enjoy this book at all but it was written really well although I did hate the plot/storyline sucks.

Feliks Mea wrote: "I had to drag my self though this book in 6th grade I refuse to give this book like two stars because as a writer I know that writing book is not easy even when you love to write. I really did no..."

Is this a sample of your own writing style? This post of yours, I mean?

message 54: by Mea (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mea Feliks - No I would not say Island of the Blue dolphins is a sample of my own writing but I really liked the way the author wrote the story when it comes to language and description.

Samantha Kirby wrote: "well, let me know if it's any good! :)

have any of you guys read any of scott o'dell's other books?"

its amazing

Feliks No, I meant was your *message board post* a sample of your own formal writing as might be found in one of your own novels. You mentioned you were a writer and thus implied that you were giving an opinion from a writer's POV.

Scott O'Dell wrote IoTBD, of course.

Book_Lover101 I read it sixth grade and i didnt enjoy it..... maybe because i didnt have enought time to read it throughly.

message 58: by Mea (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mea Feliks-No my comment was not a sample of my own writing( at least I wouldn't think so). In each of my writing I write differently so to be honest im not all sure my comment would be a sample of my writing style if thats what your implying.

Feliks No offense. I just found what you were saying slightly at odds with the way you were saying it.

message 60: by Mea (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mea Feliks- I could understand why you would think that considering my wording. No offense is taken

Fernanda Bomtempo-Marzo I remember that I loved the book and read several of his other books as well.

Samantha Boyer Another GREAT book by Scott O'Dell is called Sing Down The Moon. I read it 3 times and still can't figure out what the title has to do with it! Lol ot is great and so was IotBD!!!!!

Linda I was given this book when I was about 10 by my book loving Grandmother. I loved it and still have it.

Katherine E-J I loved this book so much! I have read this book probably about three times or more. If you look up this book on Wikipedia you will find that this was based off of real events. I was astonished and intrigued by the articles. If you liked this book, you would love reading about the actual woman.

Samantha Boyer Read the stuff in the back of the book and it tells you all about her and how she was real.

Kirby Here's an interesting article I found a while back, about how they may have found Karana's cave:

http://news.discovery.com/history/arc...

Katherine E-J I know!! I also read one that the New York Times published. That article had a picture of the cave which was pretty awesome!! You should Google it.

Maureen beautiful story, listened to the audio book, wonderful :) one of my son's favorite books also. recommend it to readers of all ages!

Anastasia really like it!

Jenny I read this book as a child and loved it! It stayed with me for years. In fact, at age 50, I still think about it now and then and would love to visit the Aleutian islands (bit impractical for anyone, but especially from Tasmania...!)

I was so inspired by her ability to survive and innovate. As a young girl, it was wonderful to have to have a non - Barbie style role model.

message 71: by Lise (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lise I read it once and have yet to be able to garner the strength to read it again. It was such an emotional and psychological blow for me at the time -- not quite, but almost traumatising because it was so deep and moving.

I love it of course, but I felt everything from the isolation and loneliness to the uncertainty so strongly that it's like I went thru it, so I guess that's why I can't reread it yet ^_^

Anastasia Lise wrote: "I read it once and have yet to be able to garner the strength to read it again. It was such an emotional and psychological blow for me at the time -- not quite, but almost traumatising because it w..."

Maybe I've kind of felt the same way. I haven't been able or wanting to reread this since I read it...

message 73: by Sarah (new) - rated it 1 star

Sarah I realy didn't like it, but I usually don't like survival books.

Renee E Lise wrote: "I read it once and have yet to be able to garner the strength to read it again. It was such an emotional and psychological blow for me at the time -- not quite, but almost traumatising because it w..."

EXACTLY!

I loved it. I think I read it in the fifth grade, checked it out of the school library, and it hit me so hard that I doubt I'll ever be able to read it again. I did not understand my own situation at the time (caught between a mother and a younger sister who are both malignant NPDs) and the feeling of abandonment and isolation was devastating.

That is how powerful O'Dell's writing is.

Maddie C. HELL NO

Dramapuppy I did not like this book. I found the whole story kind of boring. Not enough happened. It was more thoughts and emotions than actual plot. Plus it was depressing but not in a "Oh, that was well-written. I cared about that character enough that I cried when he died," way. It was more like, "Okay, I didn't really care about that character, but WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT FOR?" It was assigned reading; I don't know what grade. I love survival stories, but this wasn't survival. It was for Realistic Fiction fans who don't mind a lot of filler.

Brooklyn Ann I read this book in the 3rd grade and it haunted my memories for years and I couldn't remember the title so I didn't find it again until I was in my late 20's... and it still held the same magic.

Faith I hated this book.

So many years pass, and year can just apparently go by in a sentence and making a canoe. Super Boring. Wayyy too detailed too. And it's kind of like most stranded stories.
1.) Someone's stranded
2.) Someone dies
3.) Someone gets rescued

Agreed. I actually love survival stories but I found this boring too. Not what I was looking for. Details, details, details.

yeah

Haley i thought it was fine but defiantly not my favorite book

Jennifer Yes, I liked this book. I like it even more, now, because I know it is based on a true story. I want to visit the location as a vacation.

message 85: by Sara (new) - added it

Sara Testarossa It was one of my favorite books as a child. I believe I read it when I was in elementary school. I really liked how she was able to be so independent and survive through her circumstances. Plus, I liked the writing style.

Kaylee I loved reading this book! I thought it was kind of boring when my teacher first assigned; but now I love it! Thanks Teacher!!

I was in either fourth or fifth grade when I read it. I think it was a class read where we all had to read along with the teacher. But I would go home and read onward, and I remember spending time during the summer pretending I was off on an island alone.

It was one of the first stories that I read that I was emotionally connected where I was upset when things happened to the characters. So, yes, really did enjoy it as a kid.

Little Sarah A lot of you people say you LOVED this book.
Well, I think you're all a little crazy.
My Lit teacher made my class read this in sixth grade and I HATED EVRY SECOND of it. I SLOWLY DIED WHILE READING THIS BOOK. Then I came back to life and died again when she made us watch the movie.
But, everyone is different....

Aaron Carson There's a movie? Good grief.

Lolegitmalmeister With all due respect, I really disliked this book! I'm kind of surprised that so many people love it so much! What was the appeal?

Renee E Maybe it resonates more to people who are growing up with, or grew up with a sense of isolation for some reason.

message 94: by Nora (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nora I came to it late. Read as an adult few years back to see what the acclaim was about. Loved it.

That about sums it up

Maire I read this in fifth grade, and I remember seeing it and thinking "Ugh. I don't want to read this book." But I started reading it and I found I really enjoyed it. I think it was the way it was written--if anyone else had written it I might have just given up despite the fact that it was an assignment. I mean the story-line could be very easy to mess-up. Scott O'Dell just kind of wrote it in a way that grabbed my attention and by the end of the book I had added a new book to my mental favorites list. THIS BOOK WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!!!!!!

Dramapuppy Maire, I read this in fourth grade. It sounded like my kind of thing and I wanted to read it. But it disappointed me. It glossed over the actual plot in favor of philosophical themes. This can be done well but in this case I feel like it was not.

YES! I typically enjoy a more YA type book with lots of Action and Romance, which Island of the Blue Dolphin is definitely not, but for some reason I just kept coming back to this book. I have read it maybe 5 times(?) and it just keeps getting better!

Linda Loved the book and loved the movie!

Roberto Martinez I remember getting it in 4th grade at the school book fair. I was surprised this was a children's book and I loved it. I still have that copy!
