Martha is an AMAZING character. I have the advantage of hindsight so I know the men she is courting do extreme things but still....it is amazing that one women saw the "other side" of so many of the men from this era. I find it amazing how much information the author could find about all of this. These people must have kept THOROUGH journals (plus letters and notes and whatever else).
