Claire Michie | 22 comments I read this book in the past two years. There are two brothers, possibly from Italy (?) who end up marrying some sisters from Brooklyn (?) in slightly olden times (early 1900s, late 1800s?) one sister is pretty, the other is ugly (maybe) the part i remember most distinctly is a scene where one of the women is in a village square at a market and an old gypsy woman beckons her over to a cage of rabbits. she cuts a rabbit in half and it magically becomes two and the woman is horrified and the old lady laughs. this somehow comes into play with twins, and the death of one of the brothers (he accidentally falls off the roof of a house the two brothers are building?) has anyone read this book?

The part about the hare is in the history of the main character's grandfather, a sort of story in a story. The grandfather was the immigrant (with his brother, who died), but the book is mainly about the main character and his twin brother who was crazy. Wonderful book.
