I think this is a smart book and went to bed smiling after I finished it. I don't know if anyone else has caught the red herring but the book makes a much more interesting read if you do. Could it be that P.D. James gets to have the last laugh with this book? Certainly her smile on the back cover indicates so. Make the assumption that Colonel Fitzwilliam is the father of Louisa's baby. Go back and read it again. Every thing falls nicely into place and it's far more enjoyable. Thank you P.D. James for getting away with it.
