Mockingjay
question
Pardon me, while I go into a deep depression. *BIG TIME SPOILERS*

WOW. I had something to look forward to in the first two books, and even though I heard that Mockingjay was bad, I still had a little bit of hope.
Ugh! I mean the ending was some what happy, but really? Gale just up and leaves, and no, I don't hate him now, but seriously? Finnick just dies, and she doesn't even touch up on Annie besides she has a baby, which is just heartbreaking, nothing about Haymitch, Johanna, or anyone, and my all time favorite character, Madge, died! : ( I felt SO bad for Peeta, and Katniss' character just fell apart! And WHAT THE HECK WITH PRIM!!!!!! So sad! And her mother just left her.
Suzanne Collins, you managed to create possibly the best book ever written in my opinion, and everything just went downhill from there.
Sorry, about my ranting, but pardon me, while I go into a deep depression.

@Erika,
Exactly.
Seriously, not everything in life is about romance. And kudos to Suzanne Collins for letting her characters stay in character and react the way they would. She didn't force them into a happy ending. She gave them real conflict, and left them with real consequences to live with. Thank god she didn't take the easy path and give everyone a happy ending. It gives the last book some real depth, and resolves the series in a fitting way.

I was devastated by the ending as well, but for a different reason. I LOVED the ending. I mean, there's not much positive in it, but it was real.
I was more devastated by the directness with which Collins highlighted the nature of Evil in human civilization. Good won, but not without significant scarring. Katniss was the centerpiece for the entire movement, she had been used and pushed and broken. I thought it was awesome of Collins to let Katniss react the way she did.
Would Katniss have done half the things she did in these books if she wasn't pushed or just at the right place at the right time? She didn't HUNGER for change, she just reacted strongly to injustice when it was shoved in front of her. She was masterful at reacting with power and grace, which is why she was the perfect figurehead. She was NOT by any means a political figure on her own right. At least that was my thought. She was human, and wanted to protect those close to her.
Thinking about these books makes me think of war and genocide and government cruelty. I think Collins meant for these things to be brought to the surface. There can be happiness AFTER these happen, but they cannot END happily.

I know I so agree. The first two books were so good and then she just kills it in the end. I mean Katniss is all pink and scared and Peeta still has problems from his time at the capital. It really saddens me. So yeah, let me join you in DEEP DEPRESSION!

I felt like it was so much information in book 3. Speeding up and slowing down and then the ending was odd.
How they had a meeting, you think she is going to assassinate one yet she kills another. All this time you know what she is thinking but then she is falling apart. I didn't like how she just sat in the room and was so depressed. Pages about her going weird...
Even the writing was hurried to me, describing things and getting everything out so fast, I almost didn't catch who was behind what and who was what and why...
Then she ends up with Peeta. I felt it was because she felt bad for him and couldn't leave him more than "love". Then there were loose ends with others, etc.
After all the build up I finished and thought, that's it? You almost wish there was more but more of what!?

TOTALLY!! When I finished the book I just sat there and kept asking "why did I waste my life away reading that last book?"lol The end was just like BAM BAM BAM everything happened with Katniss, Gale, Peeta, Prim:( everyone, it was just blah. Buuutttt....I do kinda just a little bit like that it was not the fairytale ending like I am use to. The biggest plus side was she ended up with Peeta<3 ahhh I love Peeta!!!
I think it was disappointing because the ending was so underdeveloped. All of the depressing things you mentioned happened in like ten pages. She had done such a good job creating characters and then bam, everyone's gone in about ten pages. It almost felt like a cheap way out to me.
I loved Finnick. I loved Peeta even more.
So WHY did Suzanne Collins choose to do what she did?!?!?!?!?!
I will now go and read The Underwear Scene to cheer myself up.

Am I the only one who either missed or forgot about the Katniss' addiction to morphine? lol
i agree, Christina. it was a total disservice to katniss' character. she was an admirable person, and she just checked out and went into depression. i understand ptsd, but still! it wasn't the katniss i knew before. plus the whole gale-made-the-bomb made me soo mad. sheeeeesh. choose a different way to kick him out of the love triangle!
couldn't agree with you more. it's like she just wanted to be done with the series and publish it. i think it was such a let down to have katniss 'black out' during the big fight. yes, it would have made the book longer, but it would have made the ending so much better if she actually used her as the 'main' character to get the story from her eyes, instead of her being told after the fact.
i hated that she ended up with peeta, or the shell that was peeta. i would have much rather her been in a different district with gale then back at her home with someone who she really couldn't even have a future with. very disappointing. i could rant about the ending of this book for a while. lol.

Yeah Suzanne Collins tends to write the worst possible endings...... Has anyone read her Gregor : the over lander series? WORST ENDING EVER and then with mockingjay!!!! Ugh... Anyway, that's MY ranting...
I think Suzanne Collins did that on purpose. I mean, this book was not a fairytale with the happily ever after. If nobody died, then it would be too predictable. Personally, I did not go into a deep depression because of all the deaths (although I bawled over Prim), I went into a deep depression because of Gale! I loved him! And then BAM! Katniss chooses the guy who she barely knows (compared to Gale). I wished, every time I put my book down, that Katniss would choose Gale! I started crying and was miserable for the rest of the day when she didn't. I know, I know, total drama queen, but that's what happens when you are in love with a book, and have your expectations set high! *sigh*
I liked the ending, i don't know why you guys are sad or even mad about it. It's like if everyone was just looking for a happily ever after story with the team peeta and team gale.
It wasn't just about the romance thing, it's about war and its consequences, How did you want it to end?
