I would think that too, but a couple at my church actually are foster parents and all they take in are children 5 years old and younger. They seem to be doing a great job and they've got to be in their sixties or seventies. So I'd have to say as long as they're in good health it might not be an issue. Plus, if they have that many children (back to the Lakashi-which reminds me of the name of a breakfast cereal) then they may have help. Guess we'll have to wait and see what they're like.

Not sure yet. Something weird is going on with them. With what we know about what Dr. Swenson is like, you have to wonder why these 2 people are helping/protecting/covering for her.
9. The Lakashi women can have children up until death, should women of any age be able to have children? Explain your position.
Honestly, it depends on the situation. I don't want kids now, much less when I'm over 50. If the ladies of this tribe are healthy and energetic and/or have help with the children and they actually want to continue having babies, then more power to them.
10. Make a prediction about what will happen once Marina finds Dr. Swenson.
Swenson will probably be angry that the company sent another annoyance.

I think this couple is probably the exception but I could be wrong. I think a person should be allowed to have children at whatever age if they decide to do so but at the same time I find it improbable.

They seem to treat her as some sort of celebrity - shooing out/hurrying all the other customers in the store when she walked in - just screams preferential treatment. Gotta love large expense accounts. I'm curious just how much money she's spent in that city over the years.
12) Do you think she showed up because the Bovenders approved of Marina or do you think no one knows when they lady truly will show up? Could it be Milton is the real gate keeper and the Bovenders are just the front?
I'm not sure. She's supposed to be impossible to contact, but they had to have gotten a message to her somehow. No telling who it is.
13) I don't know about anyone else, but I find it very odd that Swenson isn't acknowledging knowing Marina from before. Do you think she honestly doesn't remember her or is just hoping her standoffish attitude will scare her off?
You would think that something like one of your underlings accidentally disfiguring a baby would stick in your memory. Even a doctor with as much experience as Swenson seems to have.
14) I was totally shocked by Mr. Fox wanting Marina to stay. Does anyone else question whether or not he really cares about Marina?
I wasn't shocked at all. He is probably under a lot of heat from the company's board members to find out just what Swenson is doing down there. He might care about Marina, but the company will always come first.
15) Do you think Marina should have headed home or do you think she's wise to see what Dr. Swenson is up to?
I knew she wouldn't go home. Curiosity and all, you know. I'm sure she also wants to know exactly what happened to Anders and hopefully retrieve his body.
16) I was surprised that Marina didn't just send all those letters back to Karen.
Maybe she didn't want to trust the mail system, or she just didn't think of it.
17) Do you think this fertility thing could actually be a sort of fountain of youth?
Maybe. There's always some fountain of youth story when you're dealing with the Amazon region.

1. First impressions so far?
A little boring, I didn't read the blurb so I had no idea what it would be about. I hate the sporadic flashbacks; one paragraph we are in the present and the next in the past. Give a gal a chance to process.
2. What do you think the drug is that Dr. Swenson is trying to research? Does it have to do with the fertility of the Amazon tribe that has already been mentioned or is it something else?
I think it has to do with fertility drugs but I also think she is doing something shady. I get that she wants to preserve her research until it's done but why would she keep Vogel in the dark like that? I smell trouble.
3. What are your impressions of Dr. Swenson so far?
At this point we haven't met her yet but based on what has been said I'm getting the evil scientist vibe.
4. What a sad side story! (Marina and her father)
I can't connect to Marina so it didn't really affect me.
5. "... I will pray that the letter carrier sends this to you so that you can feel the full weight of my love. Kiss the boys for me. Kiss the insde of your wrist." AWWWWW! I teared up when I read this part!
Haha, at least one of us did.
6. Do you think Anders is really dead or is Swenson keeping him quiet because he found out too much?
I don't think he's dead because if he was then what would be the point of this book? Plus, I think Dr. Swenson is shady.
7. SHE THREW AWAY HER MALARIA PILLS?!?!? I understand they give you horrid nightmares, but gosh!
Malaria > Horrid Nightmares. She said there are different pills (albeit lighter dosages) so why didn't she replace them with those?

8. What do you think of the Bovenders strange alliance to Dr. Swenson?
It's creepy, why does this woman hold such reverence over them? Their protectiveness towards her conflicts with their bohemian lifestyle.
9. The Lakashi women can have children up until death, should women of any age be able to have children? Explain your position.
No. Just because science allows it, doesn't mean it should be done. Think of all the problems we have now: overpopulation, orphans, homeless children, etc...Now imagine a world where a woman's biological clock is nonexistent. These problems would be doubled, tripled, especially in 3rd world countries where the use contraception isn't abundant.
10. Make a prediction about what will happen once Marina finds Dr. Swenson.
I think Marina will want to know where Dr. Eckman is buried so a trip to the jungle may ensue.

#8: If it was only about money don't you think the Bovenders would sell Dr. Swenson out to the highest bidder? From what has been said a lot of people are interested in her research. Whoever develops this drugs can earn pharmaceutical companies billions of dollars so I'm pretty sure they would be willing to dish out a few millions for some information. I think their loyalty goes way beyond money.
#9: Yes, but think of the problems. I think the good of this drug is eclipsed by the bad. I think we as a culture as are so obsessed with anti-aging. I would take menopause any day. It's so funny that not one word about side affects have been mentioned. One can only imagine...

#9: I don't think a 60 year old has enough energy to take care of toddlers as a 30 year old would. And when they're 10, you'd be 70 so I agree with you in that respect. I just can't see the benefit on having children when you have so little years left. It's kind of selfish IMO. And lets not even begin to talk about the health risks some elderly people face (Alzheimer's, Dementia, Parkinson's).

8. What do you think of the Bovenders strange alliance to Dr. Swenson?
I think it's super weird. They are totally rearranging their lives around Dr. Swenson. I am definitely wondering how Dr. Swenson has such a hold on them.
9. The Lakashi women can have children up until death, should women of any age be able to have children? Explain your position.
I think there should be a point where a woman is too old to have children. And maybe it would be different for each women depending on their health.
10. Make a prediction about what will happen once Marina finds Dr. Swenson.
I think Dr. Swenson is going to be upset.

Maybe they're infertile. Only explanation I can think of.

11) What did you think about Dr. Swenson and the way people reacted to her?
I think they act that way for two reasons. One, it seems like the Bovenders are a little scared of her. The way they acted in the Opera house seems to make me lean in that direction. Two, she also seems to have a lot of power if the indication of how the customers leave and scurry out of Rodrigo's shop is any indication. Either way my opinion of her is even lower due to her attitude and treatment of other people. Who cares if she is a brilliant doctor, that is no reason to act like a donkey.
12) Do you think she showed up because the Bovenders approved of Marina or do you think no one knows when they lady truly will show up? Could it be Milton is the real gate keeper and the Bovenders are just the front?
I think that she somehow knew that someone was going to show up after Eckerman died, but I don't think anyone notified her. Or at least not the Bovenders. If they had notified her I don't think they would have seemed so shocked when she showed up at the Opera.
13) I don't know about anyone else, but I find it very odd that Swenson isn't acknowledging knowing Marina from before. Do you think she honestly doesn't remember her or is just hoping her standoffish attitude will scare her off?
I find this odd as well. It seems like she would remember her vaguely at least. At the same time she seems so self absorbed and worried about her own business that maybe she truly doesn't remember.
14) I was totally shocked by Mr. Fox wanting Marina to stay. Does anyone else question whether or not he really cares about Marina?
I wasn't shocked that he wanted her to stay. I think he is concerned with how much money they are throwing out to this woman and then they aren't seeing any results back. I think his business is more important to him, at least that is the impression that I get from him or he wouldn't have asked her to go in the first place.
15) Do you think Marina should have headed home or do you think she's wise to see what Dr. Swenson is up to?
I think Marina wanted to go home, but she can't due to her companies wishes. At this point I began to wonder why they don't send more people down to the Amazon to force Dr. Swenson's hand. Then they wouldn't have to worry about what Dr. Swenson is up to.
16) I was surprised that Marina didn't just send all those letters back to Karen.
I think she knew that the letters would just put Karen in more pain, so she is trying to help by keeping them away from her.
17) Do you think this fertility thing could actually be a sort of fountain of youth?
I am not sure exactly what it is but there is definitely more to the story.

I felt exactly the same way for the majority of the book. I'll be interested to see if you finish the book feeling the same.

11) What did you think about Dr. Swenson and the way people reacted to her?
I think people were nervous around her like they were afraid of disappointing her.
12) Do you think she showed up because the Bovenders approved of Marina or do you think no one knows when they lady truly will show up? Could it be Milton is the real gate keeper and the Bovenders are just the front?
I agree with Laura. The Bovenders seemed too surprised to be the ones that could have tipped off Dr. Swenson. I think she truly just showed up and just expects everyone to cater to her every need.
13) I don't know about anyone else, but I find it very odd that Swenson isn't acknowledging knowing Marina from before. Do you think she honestly doesn't remember her or is just hoping her standoffish attitude will scare her off?
I think she really doesn't remember Marina, because she is so self absorbed.
14) I was totally shocked by Mr. Fox wanting Marina to stay. Does anyone else question whether or not he really cares about Marina?
I wasn't shocked at this point. I was more surprised when he asked her to go in the first place.
15) Do you think Marina should have headed home or do you think she's wise to see what Dr. Swenson is up to?
I think she should have headed home. I think the company should have sent two people to check out the project instead of only sending one.
16) I was surprised that Marina didn't just send all those letters back to Karen.
It would have been hard for Karen to know that she had written all those letters and Anders didn't get to read any of them so I think Marina was just trying to spare Karen some pain.
17) Do you think this fertility thing could actually be a sort of fountain of youth?
I think it's a definite possibility.

Questions for Chapter 3
8. What do you think of the Bovenders strange alliance to Dr. Swenson?
Weird a little bit. Seems like they do not have a purpose in life, so they feel like they are serving to a greater good if they are helping some 'great scientist'...
9. The Lakashi women can have children up until death, should women of any age be able to have children? Explain your position.
Well I think that it is not something that is only connected to menopause. They say that pregnancy is more risky the older you get. I know a friend whose mother got pregnant when she was 50 and she almost died. So I don't know if pills that stop menopause will really help so much...
Anyway, I think that every women has a right to choose when she will have her baby. But I would not like to have a child when I am too old. The point is not to give birth to a baby, but to guide it trough life. It's bigger chances that you will live until your child grows up if you have the baby while you are younger.
10. Make a prediction about what will happen once Marina finds Dr. Swenson.
Maybe dr. Swenson is dead and Bovanders and Milton are just living easy. LOL Just a wild guess, I really don't know. :D

I felt exactly the same way for the majority of the book. I'll be interested to see if you finish the book feeling the same."
I also still can not connect to Marina. I think I am a lost cause, but we will see. Maybe it will happen later.

When they started describing the 'Teatros Amazonas' I imagined that it is similar to our old theater at Belgrade (capital of Serbia), I always feel like I stepped into a fairy-tale when I go there.

They do have similar Russian influence in architecture.

That's no problem, Kim, I don't mind waiting. Thanks for volunteering.

When they started describing the 'Teatros Amazonas' I imagined that it is similar to our old theater at Belgrade (capital of Serbia), I always feel like I step..."
That is a beautiful building. What did you see in it -- play, concert, dance?

When they started describing the 'Teatros Amazonas' I imagined that it is similar to our old theater at Belgrade (capital of Serbia), I always feel like I step..."
It is such a beautiful building. I don't think I have ever been in something as grand, even when I went to Japan, I didn't see this kind of grandeur.

I did! I was surprised by the pictures. It wasn't how I pictured it in my mind.

Yup, when I saw the pictures I asked myself why she disliked it so much. She acts like she is in the most uncivilized part of the world.

I was in Tokyo for two days and then we wen to Okinawa for the remainder of our two week stay. Don't get me wrong I saw a castle there and it was beautiful but a very different kind of beautiful.

I am a very visual person, so early on I googled Manaus and all of the birds too. I did find it very odd that she acted that way about the city but I have friends that have been in the Amazon and they describe it much like Pachett does. I hope to go this summer to visit the Mahuna tribe of Peru.

Questions for Chapter 6-7
1.)Wow! I didn't know Dr. Swenson was that old! Marina says she is in her 70s!
2.) I really love Easter. What do you think of him?
3.) The admiration and excitement that the Lakashi showed Dr. Swenson upon her return and the curiosity they showed Marina was interesting to me. Did you think so?
4.) Why do you think Anders was so attached to Easter? After all he requested for the next person to get him back to America. Does he see Easter's potential?
5.) What in the world happened to Marina's clothes at the end of chapter 7?

1.)Wow! I didn't know Dr. Swenson was that old! Marina says she is in her 70s!
This part just really shocked me. I mean I guess I should have known that since Marina was a middle aged woman, but still.
2.) I really love Easter. What do you think of him?
He's a really cool kid. He seems to want to please and I wish Dr. Swenson treated him better. She seems so mean to me.
3.) The admiration and excitement that the Lakashi showed Dr. Swenson upon her return and the curiosity they showed Marina was interesting to me. Did you think so?
Even having traveled to other Central/South American countries, I found their reaction a little shocking. Most people don't even act this excited to see someone that they have known for a long time. And in today's world, I have yet to see someone be so curious towards another. Then again, I haven't been in the heart of the Amazon either!
4.) Why do you think Anders was so attached to Easter? After all he requested for the next person to get him back to America. Does he see Easter's potential?
I think he reminded him of his boys back home and yes, he could see how smart the kid was.
5.) What in the world happened to Marina's clothes at the end of chapter 7?
I found this part of the story so odd! I couldn't decide if they didn't give them back because they were wet, they truly didn't understand what she was asking for, or because they wanted her to fit in with everyone else.

1.)Wow! I didn't know Dr. Swenson was that old! Marina says she is in her 70s!
I figured she'd be over 60. 70 seems a bit old to still be out traipsing through a dangerous jungle.
2.) I really love Easter. What do you think of him?
He seems really sweet and smart. I hope nothing bad happens to him.
3.) The admiration and excitement that the Lakashi showed Dr. Swenson upon her return and the curiosity they showed Marina was interesting to me. Did you think so?
It makes me wonder what Swenson does for these people. Do they consider her part of the tribe? The curiosity for Marina seemed to be normal - she's a new person. I'd be curious about her as well.
4.) Why do you think Anders was so attached to Easter? After all he requested for the next person to get him back to America. Does he see Easter's potential?
I'm sure it was because he missed his boys. He probably loved him as if he were his own - wanted the best for him. And he maybe he thought Swenson wouldn't take him with her if/when she finally left.
5.) What in the world happened to Marina's clothes at the end of chapter 7?
Maybe they saw it as a trade - her wet clothes for their dry ones. Or they'll give the clothes back after laundry day. I'd offer to wash someone's clothes if my child peed on them.

I think I assumed she was a bit older, but her being in her 70s caught me by surprise. I can't really imagine someone of that age functioning very well in the circumstances in which she lives - which just goes to show my own (perhaps unrealistic) bias.
2.) I really love Easter. What do you think of him?
I wanted to take him home with me too.
3.) The admiration and excitement that the Lakashi showed Dr. Swenson upon her return and the curiosity they showed Marina was interesting to me. Did you think so?
I chalked that up to the long history she has with them and the effort she clearly has made to integrate with the tribe (in her own way). I suspect that, after all these years, they see her as part of the tribe. I found myself thinking (projecting?) that the way she made herself part of the tribe, combined with how scrupulously she avoided trying to make them be like her, probably endeared her to them. The curiosity about Marina might have been that Marina didn't look either like them nor like Dr. Swenson, and that they had liked the last newcomer who showed up (so maybe this one would be likable too)... Or maybe just the fact that she was a newcomer.
4.) Why do you think Anders was so attached to Easter? After all he requested for the next person to get him back to America. Does he see Easter's potential?
Homesick for his own sons, I assume, coupled with the fact that Easter was so obviously a sweet and affectionate boy.
5.) What in the world happened to Marina's clothes at the end of chapter 7?
I got the fairly strong impression that they initially took the clothes she was wearing in order to be helpful and clean them after she got urine all over them, but then kept them and her other clothes just because they wanted them. Maybe it was a status symbol (remember all the Western t-shirts?), or maybe the attitude of the tribe is "share and share alike" - I can't imagine there's much of a culture of possessiveness.

Questions for Chapters 4 - 5
11) What did you think about Dr. Swenson and the way people reacted to her?
Weird. I cannot think of an explanation why are they behaving like that around her. For example, in the shop...
12) Do you think she showed up because the Bovenders approved of Marina or do you think no one knows when they lady truly will show up? Could it be Milton is the real gate keeper and the Bovenders are just the front?
Well Bovanders seemed surprised that she is here, Milton expected her... I think that her best gatekeeper is the jungle. Even if Bovanders were not there, how would people find here when she is miles deep in forest...
13) I don't know about anyone else, but I find it very odd that Swenson isn't acknowledging knowing Marina from before. Do you think she honestly doesn't remember her or is just hoping her standoffish attitude will scare her off?
I think it is not that weird. All of the teachers from my elementary & high school classes still recognize me when I meet them and stop to talk and ask me how I am etc. Most of my college teachers do not recognize me, all I get is a blank stare or automatic greeting.
14) I was totally shocked by Mr. Fox wanting Marina to stay. Does anyone else question whether or not he really cares about Marina?
I was surprised too. He seemed to be very worried for her, sent her pills and another telephone and now he is forcing her to stay there more. I think he cares about her, but he cares about company more. :/
15) Do you think Marina should have headed home or do you think she's wise to see what Dr. Swenson is up to?
I think she is not prepared for the jungle. She only has two pairs of flip-flops to wear for god sake. I would not go there without something like this:
(view spoiler)
16) I was surprised that Marina didn't just send all those letters back to Karen.
I did not think of that. Maybe she wants to tell her whole story in person....
17) Do you think this fertility thing could actually be a sort of fountain of youth?
Maybe. Vogel seems to be spending a lot of money on this drug...["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

I guess I have never really thought about it until this discussion but I knew that the different cultures had very different architecture. Japan was a once in a lifetime experience. I don't have a desire to go back but I am glad that I went.

1.)Wow! I didn't know Dr. Swenson was that old! Marina says she is in her 70s!
I was surprised at first, then I got to thinking that Marina said she was 42 not to mention if Dr. Swenson was any younger she would have been a doctor at the age of 10. I agree with everyone else, I am surprised that she is flitting along in the jungle at her age.
2.) I really love Easter. What do you think of him?
I love Easter too! He is so sweet and such a curious little boy. I hope that Marina takes him with her when she leaves.
3.) The admiration and excitement that the Lakashi showed Dr. Swenson upon her return and the curiosity they showed Marina was interesting to me. Did you think so?
I did find it a bit odd. Its almost like they revere her. Maybe because she is a doctor and has done much to help out the tribe in that regard? Or maybe its like everyone else said and they just have accepted her into the tribe due to the length of her stay and the way she has lived among them.
4.) Why do you think Anders was so attached to Easter? After all he requested for the next person to get him back to America. Does he see Easter's potential?
I think he sees how the tribe acts differently towards him. The author mentions that their welcoming slaps were a lot harder on Easter than on the others. I also think it had to do with the fact that he was missing his young children as well.
5.) What in the world happened to Marina's clothes at the end of chapter 7?
I think they wanted them because they are so fascinated with westernized clothing.

1.)Wow! I didn't know Dr. Swenson was that old! Marina says she is in her 70s!
I didn't realize it either, but of course it makes sense. I don't know how anyone in their 70's could get around the jungle like that!!!
2.) I really love Easter. What do you think of him?
I loved him too. He was sweet.
3.) The admiration and excitement that the Lakashi showed Dr. Swenson upon her return and the curiosity they showed Marina was interesting to me. Did you think so?
Yeah, it was. And they didn't even know when she would return! So they were going to keep doing that each night until she returned.
4.) Why do you think Anders was so attached to Easter? After all he requested for the next person to get him back to America. Does he see Easter's potential?
I think he was missing his own boys. Whenever I see a child who needs help, I always think what if that were one of my kids and it makes me want to help.
5.) What in the world happened to Marina's clothes at the end of chapter 7?
I read this late last night so I was half asleep at this part, LOL! I was like, wait, what happened to her clothes, LOL!

8. What do you think of the Bovenders strange alliance to Dr. Swenson?
I think that there is something strange going on with them. I noticed that the company pays their bills as well, which I find interesting. I don't know what to think of them other than that right now.
9. The Lakashi women can have children up until death, should women of any age be able to have children? Explain your position.
I think that health wise if you didn't go through menopause and could handle it then fine. However, raising a child comes with a lot of resposibilities and energy. I find it hard to believe that someone in their sixties or seventies would have enough of that energy to make it through a day with a young child. I guess if the older children did all the raising that would be different.
10. Make a prediction about what will happen once Marina finds Dr. Swenson.
I am not sure but I am guessing that it is not going to be a joyous reunion. I am sure that there is going to be some sort of conflict.
