Introductions - tell us a little about yourself

I've been pretty much consumed by Steven Erikson's Malazan books for the last few years, and I'm currently nearing the end of the last book (the thought of which is making me rather sad, actually :( Looking forward to the rereads)
Other authors I enjoy: Guy Gavriel Kay, Jacqueline Carey, China Mieville, Scott Lynch, George R.R. Martin, and Steven Brust.
Also bought a bunch of stuff from Glen Cook that I'm looking forward to starting :)

Welcome again, and please disregard any...ummmm, uhhh...typos, yes that's it, typos.

My name is Mark. I live in California and I am attending San Jose State University. I have loved fantasy since before I could read. I grew up on Prydain, Narnia, and Redwall among others.
A few years ago, after I had read what seemed like every worthwhile fantasy novel around, I went on hiatus and switched to science fiction. Now I am returning to the fantasy genre. If anyone knows of any new fantasy authors (from the last 5 years or so) that are worthwhile, I would appreciate recommendations.
A few of my favorite authors are David Gemmell, Jennifer Roberson, and Raymond E. Feist.

Hi Mark, if you prefer your books quite dark I would recommend Mark Lawrence and Joe Abercrombie.
Others that are not quite as dark, but still great Brent Weeks, John Gwynne, Patrick Rothfuss.
Ones I've heard good things about, but haven't read myself The Crimson CampaignThe Crimson Campaign, The Lies of Locke Lamora, The Red Knight, The Thousand Names. (Pretty much my entire to-read list, couldn't name them all!)
Hope these help :)

I am Jennifer and I have just recently found out how wonderful fantasy fiction is. I am currently reading the Harry Dresden series. Loving it. I hope to find more wonderful selections from all of you. Thanks!!

My name's Amy, I like in the UK, and I'm a lifelong fantasy reader, ever since I first pinched my mum's 1970s special edition of 'The Lord of the Rings' off the bookshelf and started reading it - age 6! I'll admit, I only got about halfway at that age, but Tolkien has been right up there in my 'favourite authors' list ever since.
I'm a big BIG fan of fantasy novels by female authors, some of my recent favourites including N.K. Jemisin, Amanda Downum, Marie Brennan and Elizabeth Bear. I also have a soft spot for a few long-running series, including Shannara and A Song of Ice and Fire - although I'll admit I'm not up to date with either!
I had a look through the recent books you've been reading in the group and the list just looked so brilliant that I couldn't NOT join - so I'm looking forward to joining in a few discussions (and probably expanding my TBR pile until my shelves groan under the weight)!

Have you found Elizabeth Moon's The Deed of Paksenarrion? Moon also wrote some science fiction but I think the Paks books are her best work. They are some of my favorite epic fantasy books.
Anyway, welcome again.

Big time fantasy fan here, glad to find a fantasy focused group!
Mark Lawrence has been on my radar for a bit, too, and I saw you guys/gals had him on your reading list this month, so that gives me motivation too!
My fav fantasy (no particular order other than the last one!):
Glen Cook (the black company kept me up many nights!!)
joe abercrombie
Michael Moorcock
Fritz Leiber
Terry Brooks (mostly his early work)
Steven Erickson
#1 for me is R.E. Howard. I absolutely love his stories and I'm a total geek for his fantasy.
(why did that feel like confession??)
Anyway, looking forward to Prince of Fools!

I tend to read more science fiction/ literary cannon but also enjoy fantasy. It would be hard to pick a favorite, so I'll tell you what I'm reading now that I like: The Guns of Avalon (from Chronicles of Amber), and Cold Magic (from the Spirit Walker series). I finished Prince of Fools when it first came out and it's already on my favorites shelf!

Love...love....love...Roger Zelazny's The Chronicles of Amber.
Welcome to FBC.

Hurray for one more Amber fan ;)

Elric series by Michael Moorcock, original Conan stories by Robert E. Howard come to mind.

Moorcock's Eternal Champion books are also good (though some of Moorcock's works I dislike). Evgeny also mentioned Howard's books. I'd go along with that. Depending on what you like there's a lot of great old fantasy. Feel free to check my shelves and I'm sure others would say the same.

I figure I won't need to live much longer than say 150 years to read the books I already have waiting...
Of course I keep adding books.

My main genre is fantasy, growing up with authors such as R.E Feist, David Eddings, David Gemmell and Terry Brooks to name a few. I also read some sci-fi and horror when I fancy something different.
I am hoping to get back into reading more again using Goodreads and the groups to help give me more ideas of what to read next
I am currently working my way through the WOT series again to read the final book, I know its not everyones favourite but after reading the other books in the series I felt a need to finish it!

Delighted to find this book club. I'm currently in the Uk but have spent most of my life in Ireland/around Europe. I'm an Artist and designer. And actually will give anything creative a try. I love reading/audiobooks. I'm quite picky about the books I choose and have been reading lots of fantasy in recent years, amazed at how long it has taken me to get to some of the books. Robin Hobb books have changed my life- that may sound over dramatic but Tawny Man blew my mind. I also adore Terry Pratchett, Patrick Rothfuss and Scott Lynch. looking forwards to recommendations.

Welcome, Robert.
:)

I basically joined because my daughter belongs and she has good taste and no tolerance for drama. I currently live in Columbus, Ohio however I moved here at the age of 13 from Knoxville,..."
Welcome to the group, Marilyn.
:)

My favourite Author has to be Patrick Rothfuss and I know I'm not alone. I have also just found another great author thanks to Patrick, Catherynne M. Valente, I have only read two of her books so far but her style of writing is so creative and amazing I found myself lost in the book after the first line.
My favourite series, so obviously 'The Kingkiller Chronicle' is at the top but also high on my list is harry potter, fairyland series and His Dark Materials.
I feel like I've waffled on enough now so that's all for now.

:)
If Patrick Rothfuss is your favorite author, then Brandon Sanderson is a must read.
',:)
I've even heard, they sign each other's books.

Hi Peter, I think the Harry Potter series made a bunch of us either discover or re-discover reading. I just recently heard about Pat Rothfuss, and because of his reviews I'm in the middle of The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making. I agree with you that her writing is SO creative and fun. She's got fairy tale logic down pat. I enjoy it a lot I especially like how she kinda *winks* at her adult readers with a well-placed joke here and there, but I'm putting it on hold until the Holidays to read to the nieces and nephews which I'm sure they'll love.

Love Robin Hobb's books. Others have mentioned not liking the names, but I figure they are no different than some of the made up ones we have.
:)
She explains the reason for the names within the first book, Assassin's Apprentice.
