Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments Hi Killian, welcome. As it happens I may be what you'd consider an "ultra right wing red neck conservative". I'm not completely sure of you requirements for that title????

That said, I'm also a Browncoat (have the T-shirts, one that says "I survived Serenity Vally). Agree with you on books...music we might only partly agree on LOL. Have you tried Butcher's Dresden books or Jacka's Alex Verus books? You might also like Blood Song.

Think you'll enjoy it here, welcome again.

Feel at ease, I'm a Christian pastor and only discuss sexual orientation when the person involved insists. Gays are welcome in our congregation as well as straights, the overweight, smokers, liars, cheaters, martians, werewolves and pretty much anyone else...though probably not traditional vampires as they tend to burst into flame....

Lol. Glad you clarified. The extreme right wing thing had me scared for a bit.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments I'm one who believes in small government (leave our Rights alone. Build roads and run what needs to be run like the military. Let local people run schools and so on). I believe people OUGHT to help one another without Big Brother trying to run it. Government programs inevitably fail and waste more money than goes for what it's intended.

I suppose I largely what would be called Libertarian.

Charlie (areadingmachine) I read a bunch of books and have recently started a blogging site and using Goodreads. I collect signed and first editions of Fantasy and Science Fictions, write reviews, have links (if I find an awesome price on signed 1st eds of my favourite books) and also run giveaways.

Brandon Sanderson, Brian Stavelely, Luke Scull, Pierce Brown, Brian McClellan, Ernest Cline, Daniel P Wilson - these are a few of my favourite authors.

I am currently running a giveaway on a signed 1st Edition of Red Rising by Pierce Brown which is my favourite book of 2014 so far. If you are interested you can check my page for details.

Benjamin Liska (liskamage) Hey All-

My name is Benn and I've been a lurker over here and thought I should introduce myself. Love all things fantasy, sci-fi, horror, urban fantasy...and really just books in general. Big into tabletop RPGs. I also currently write bad fantasy novels with the aim of making them not bad. Currently reading The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie and Abaddon's Gate.

Look forward to chatting with you all.
Benn

message 3327: by Kyra (last edited Jun 24, 2014 10:37PM) (new)

Kyra Halland (kyrahalland) | 47 comments Hi, I'm Kyra. I've been reading fantasy all my life, starting with the Prydain Chronicles and the Earthsea trilogy more than 40 (!) years ago. Favorite authors at the moment are Carol Berg, Steven Erikson, Brandon Sanderson, Jonathan Moeller, Lindsay Buroker. Favorite series are Flesh and Spirit/Breath and Bone by Carol Berg, Riddlemaster Trilogy by Patricia McKillip, Ghost by Jonathan Moeller, Emperor's Edge by Lindsay Buroker, and right now I'm on Midnight Tides, book 5 of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson and loving every word of it.

I especially like fantasy that gets away from the usual tropes, has adult characters instead of coming-of-age storylines, strong female characters who do *not* show how strong they are by either hating men and/or trying to be just like men, and strong romantic storylines. Looking forward to some good discussions and reading suggestions! (like I need to add any more books to my tbr pile :P)

June (Kallandra) Kaye Hi everyone, my name is June. I really love to read and am obsessed with a good fantasy book. Currently, I'm awaiting the arrival of the newest Brent Weeks book (okay.. impatiently salivating) and I thought this would be a great way to be introduced to authors I have not ventured into reading yet.

message 3336: by Eszter (new)

Eszter (eszterjk) Hey I'm Eszter. I don't really know fantasy. I don't know how, but I guess someone suggested the series to me and I picked up Game of Thrones and loved it, so I decided to try the genre out. I researched around to see where to go to next and am now reading The Way of Kings (which I am in love with). I accidentally found this group and saw a lot of the books aligning to my research of good fantasy books so I thought I'd join to gain some more ideas and people to bounce thoughts off of. Any suggestions would be much appreciated as I am completely clueless in this genre (I currently have The Black Company, Devices and Desire (K.J. Parker), Dune (is this fantasy?), Prince of Thorns and Gardens of the Moon on my bedside table to dig into the genre, when I'll have the time is another question). So hi!

message 3337: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments I think most of us would say Dune is science fiction but I suppose it does walk the line between science fiction and fantasy...I call that science fantasy. Then of course i don't care for the sequels much...just like Dune itself.

As for other books...I'm sure we all have our favorites. If you haven't read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings I'd definitely suggest those. Some of my own favorites???? Well everyone here knows I'll recommend The Deed of Paksenarrion. It's one of my all time favorites. Among recent reads I've put on my favorites shelf there are the Powder Mage books, Promise of Blood and The Crimson Campaign. Even better than those is Blood Song which I read last year. The second in the series is due out tomorrow.

Feel free to browse my book shelves (on my profile). I figure most here would say the same thing.

Welcome again.

message 3341: by June (Kallandra) (new)

June (Kallandra) Kaye I'm looking for something to read that's along the lines of Patrick Rothfuss, Brent Weeks and Maria V. Snyder.. any suggestions?

I really like epic tales, with a dash of romance, lots of thrills and a gorgeous fantasy setting. I'm not so thrilled about long series, due to my mistakenly reading several in the middle of them (many weren't numbered) and getting lost and/or too ahead of myself. Only series that I've done this to, and gone back to read most of what I missed is Kevin Hearne's. I hope that sort of helps in stating what I do and don't like.

message 3343: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (regendanser) Hello, I am Jessica and not very comfortable yet with the whole internet forum/group thing, but I was very excited about all the recommendations and discussions here that I decided I should just go ahead and jump.
I'm from the Netherlands an have been into fantasy ever since I long ago got a copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for my birthday, and have scarcely touched a not-fantasy book ever since.
Currently, my favourite author is Brent Weeks, but I also enjoyed the Inheritance series, the Sword of Truth series, The Lies of Locke Lahmora, Sarah Ash's works and way more titles that always seem to elude me when I'm trying to list them.
Although my to-read list is already a mile long, I'm looking forward to discovering great books with you guys!

message 3347: by Tom (new)

Tom Hi everyone! My name is Tom. I have lived in many different parts of the US, enjoyed living in Sendai, Japan(hit by the 2011 earthquake/tsunami)for 10 years where I taught English at Tohoku Gakuin University, and currently live in Indiana where I work as a reference librarian at the local public library.

I bought my first fantasy/adventure book when I was 10 years old. "Tarzan at the Earth's Core", by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Shortly thereafter I read through all 24 Tarzan books and then started on his Mars, Venus, and Pellucidar series, the last being one of my all-time favorites.

Fast forward to high school and I was introduced to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I wondered who in the world would be interested in reading about elves and wizards? Once in college I decided to give it a try since I was seeing many other friends pick it up. Needless to say it opened up a fantastic world to me, one that I haven't spent much time exploring until just recently, however.

I did read and enjoyed some of the Belgariad (Eddings) and Shannara (Brooks) books over the years, but it was a very different kind of book that would transport me much deeper into the fantasy universe.

One day an older gentleman came into the library and struck up a conversation with me. He held up a book with one of the strangest covers I had ever seen, and told me that it was one of the best books he had ever read. Well I thought he must be a little odd to think that, judging by the cover. The short of it, I read it about 2 years ago and was BLOWN AWAY! The book was "Hyperion", by Dan Simmons.

Just recently I have started a fantasy book club at my library and we will be discussing some of the more popular titles on many of the "best" lists. During my research I came across this site, and here I am!

Currently reading The Wise Man's Fear (Rothfuss), and have just finished these others which have all been awesome:

Blood Song - Anthony Ryan
The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss
Game of Thrones (through book 4) - G.R.R.Martin
The Way of Kings - Brandon Sanderson
Words of Radiance - Brandon Sanderson

Looking forward to chatting with others here!

Tarzan was one of my favorites, once upon a time, then fantasy started getting more ....intricate....! Every now and then, I revisit.

message 3349: by Tom (new)

Tom Thanks Brenda! Burroughs was great for my early teenage years. Loved the imagination and action. I recently reread the Gods of Mars and it was harder to read, the dated language, repetitive action scenes, and far-farfetchedness (word?) left me a bit bored and glad to reach the end. Funny how at that young age I thought the stories and writing were awesome. Have you found that to be true?

Tom

message 3350: by Nadia (new)

Nadia Nader (NadiaNader) Hello,

I'm Nadia. I came across the link to this group in a forum. I decided to join because Fantasy's my favorite genre & I haven't read anything that blew me away in ages. I could use some recommendations. This looked like the perfect place for it.

This is the second Book Club I've joined in the past couple of weeks. The first hasn't started discussing the book yet, so I'm looking forward to a busy book club experience by the end of July!
