Yeah I tried Game of Thrones twice, I really tried, but it made me so depressed I had to stop :(. I've also just failed at The Blade Itself, sigh...I'm an escapist fantasy fan, escape to a better wonderful magical world away from this one.
LoTR is like going back to a kind of real home for me, even watching the films... :)
I hear you on Game if Thrones..... A.Probably won't like The Blade Itself.
Thanks for the heads up.
;)
Don't like GoT...The Blade Itself was okay though. Well let me correct that. It wasn't GoT itself but the way the series went on. Guess what I don't like is A Song of Ice and Fire.
I have been a "lurker" in the group for a while, but have recently posted in a discussion thread or two.I am a Speculative Fiction author myself, with my first two books already out and the third in the painful process of editing.
I am more of an "old-school" reader, and grew up with the classic ground-breakers of fantasy and sci-fi. Lewis, Tolkien, Donaldson, Leiber, Anthony, LeGuin, McCaffery, etc. The old sword and sorcery tales will always be the standard by which all other fantasy works are measured.
Most recently I have gravitated toward faith-based fantasy works. There are some brilliant self-published authors out there, as well as some bigger names like Ted Dekker and Stephen R. Lawhead. I find that these authors manage to keep the awe and effectiveness of the classic works of fantasy without resorting to the base draws of sex and vulgarity to help cover sloppy worldbuilding and shoddy writing.
I am not opposed to works containing these elements, if they are done as an integral part of the story. If they are gratuitous, then it says more about the author's skill, or lack thereof, than anything else. I tend to hold authors to a higher standard of writing itself first and foremost.
My strength as an author is in worldbuilding, and for fantasy that is a key step that generally decides between a "good" read and a "great" read. Too many authors skimp on the up front work of serious worldbuilding, and also character building, and as a result there is a lot of mediocre fantasy out there.
Hopefully via interaction in this group, I can benefit from the feedback of other readers in not only guiding me to the wisest expenditure of time and money for my reading budget, but also it will help me as an author to be more effective in reaching readers with my own work. Happy to be a member of this group!
Blessings,
David G. Johnson
Oh and I thought I was the only one re ASoIaF/GoT. my faith has been restored :). Apologies for my name; A. maybe I can adjust this somehow...
Hey everyone! Well it's safe to say that I'm a fantasy/ science fiction virgin. I've only read GRRM "A Game of Thrones" and I am currently reading Michael J Sullivan's "Theft of Swords: Book 1." I've always liked the idea of the fantasy genre but now I'm kicking myself for having waited so long before picking one up! Well I'm super excited about this group, and cannot wait to immerse myself in all things fantasy! :)
hi my name is samia and i m from pakistan. This is my first contribution on this group. my favourite authors are brandon sanderson, patrick rothfuss and jim buthcher. Favorites series are the stormlight archives, codex alera and the kingkiller chronicle.
Hi all from Italy ! I'm an old reader of Fantasy in many flavours:from J.R.R. Tolkien to Jim Butcher
from Marion Zimmer Bradley to Brandon Sanderson
from Robert Jordan to Steven Erikson.
In the last month I have lurked in the shadow,
but now I'll start the "May adventure " with you.
I'm shy and a bit lazy so, usually, I don't post often; probably I'll be a perfect wall flower.
Well, that's all for now.
Love, Peace and Good Books to everyone.
Hello, I'm Athena. I love love Fantasy/high-fantasy reads. I just finished Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson, it's amazing! Love Dalinar. I'm reading The Black Company by Glen Cook currently. And I will start Mistborn later this week.

I was so swept away by that series.
Hey Athena (Shardbearer) (if I may ask) what is your (Shardbearer) reference? I can place it in a game but I'm having trouble coming up with a book. Just wondered if it was from a novel.Thanks...and if it's none of my business...sorry.
