Hi Vanessa, welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.

I'm Linda and guess what...........I love reading fantasy books, fantasy is the only type genre I read, yes I know I am shutting myself off to a whole world of other great books but I like what I like. I did try to broaden my book shelf once but it didn't last long.
I got into Fantasy books when I was about 11ish and I stole my big sisters book titled 'The Ring of Allaire' by Susan Dexter, unfortunately she only had the first 2 books of the trilogy and I was never able to locate the final book (before the days of internet!!!). After exhausting my search of all my local book shops I accepted my fate to never find out how the story ends and moved on.
Fast forward 10 years an amazing thing called the internet has been invented and even better an amazing website called ebay is created. So one day when I had nothing better to do with my time then look through other peoples junk, a memory of my childhood jump into my head, a memory of a book that started my love of fantasy, a trilogy I never got to finish, and so I type the title into the search and hit enter, there on the page is someone selling all three books together. It only took 10 years but I finally got to find out how the story ends and read about the princess getting her prince and they all living happily ever after.

Welcome Linda! That is an incredibly sweet story about what passion for reading fantasy is all about. It transcends time and is able to connect your childhood to your adult days. I found out that there are so many great values and stories in this genre that can help you develop in your teen years and take you to great adventures. And when you read them as an adult, you see the subtext about society or politics and can appreciate them again on other levels as well.
And now I'm going to look out for that Susan Dexter series. :)
Hi Linda, welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.

Can I quote you to my Mum, every time she tells me I spend too much time reading or rapped up in my home life, and I should make more effort to socialise? Even though I'm perfectly happy with my small band true friends!!!
Thank you Charlton, I look forward to getting loads of recommendations, as if my to-read list is not big enough as it is.

Of course! :) And you're socialising about books right now. *waves friendly at Linda's mum across the Atlantic Ocean*

Some of my favorite series are Lord of the Rings, Mistborn, Farseer and Tawny Man. And I'm looking forward to reading old favorites and new ones in the coming new year.
Hi Nienna, welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.

I am pretty new to goodreads too (having a kindle does strange things to me!), living in Germany, in Kassel, the town of the brothers Grimm (with the fairy tales), but wondering about immigrating to Canada together with my Spanish wife, in the hope that it will be a) easier for me to find a job there, and b) easier for my wife to communicate, since her English is perfect, and with German, well, she is still learning.
My list of favorite authors is of course led by the ever present Tolkien (read him about 7 times in German, now am stuck in the English original), the incredible Terry Pratchett, the epic George Martin and some of the new authors (Potter, Eragon, Mistborn, but i also like Trudi Canavan).
My love for fantasy started, as for so many others, with the Hobbit, but i was hooked by a German author, Wolfgang Hohlbein, who seems not to be translated into English (at least I can only find french translations in amazon), and I loved him very much. Oh, and of course, Michael Ende with the neverending story and Momo, two of my child-time favorites.
I read many other fantasy novels too, liked some of them a lot, others much less, for example I was not really thrilled by leGuin, maybe it was because of the translation which does not seem to be great, so it might be different when I read her in English.
Hi Toni, welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.

We are David and Sheila Quinio, collectively going by DSQuinio and we are happy to be a part of this fantasy book club! Just to quickly introduce ourselves, we are published authors but we are here as fanatics... David is an avid RPG gamer and I, Sheila, am a certified epic fantasy bookworm, earning my laurels through consistent trips to the principal's office in my youth for always getting caught snooping on the wrong side of the library (restricted section-- Sci-fi and Fantasy books meant for older kids only! =D). Both of us are fascinated with fantasy, as I'm sure other people are, simply because each of us have an inner child inside--rapturous over the next movie, game or book about a different world, magic, and lore that we can get our (excited and trembling) hands on.
We are looking forward to interacting with each and everyone here!

Hi Ayo and D.S.welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.

I'm from Wales (UK, in case anyone doesn't know), and new to goodreads. I'm a lifelong reader of fantasy (and scifi and horror) books, as well as a few other things (including history and politics) although I'll admit I'm a little out of touch with some of the more modern stuff, so I'm hoping to get some interesting discussion and recommendations. In my youth I was an rpg'er and LARPer, but that was all a very long time ago now - I guess that's what started my on the fantasy trail, though.
Favourite fantasy authors include the likes of Terry Pratchett, Roger Zelazny and David Eddings, and I do like a bit of clever wordiness (or even well-placed long-windedness!).
Oh, I'm also a former moderator at one of the largest political discussion forums on the web, so I know about sticking to the rules (he says, looking at the big notice next to me as I type my first post!)! I'll be a good boy, honest!

Thanks, lol. And welcome!
Hi T.welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.

My favourite authors are Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind, Terry Pratchett, Brent Weeks and Jacqueline Carey. Joe Abercrombie left me a bit cold, and I'm ambivalent about GRRM.
Hi Ciara, welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.

I remember I got started in fantasy with Dragons of Autumn Twilight back when I was about eight years old, and I've never stopped.
My favorites of the genre?
The Song of Fire and Ice - George R.R. Martin
The Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan
Dragon Prince & Dragon Star trilogies - Melanie Rawn
Black Company - Glenn Cook
First Law Trilogy - Joe Abercrombie
I guess I generally tend to like the new flavor of gritty, dark fantasy to the more formulaic high fantasy.
Anyway, I notice I've already read your december reading, but some of the choices for January look interesting, so I may participate in the discussion!
Hi Doug, welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.

Yeah, I had the atlas, every dragonlance book, the roleplaying games, etc.
Never did get into the Forgotten Realms or any of the other TSR series.
I went back and tried to read Chronicles again a few years ago... it is one of those things that just didn't age with me I guess. lol

Being from Bellingham, WA I didn't know where and how to learn more about the genre so I decided to join this group hoping this is the official fantasy group of all fantasies.:)
Thanks

Well, hardly that, but we do have avid readers and many good discussions.
Hi Ryan, welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.
You can always try some David Eddings or Raymund E. Feist.

Hi P.M.F.,welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.

Hi Maggie, welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.

Hi Rever, welcome to the Fantasy Book Club.

I grew up in BC and was homeschooled for part of upbringing. My mother read a lot to us which fueled my passion for reading.
I have since collected close to 400 hardcover books, over 250 of which are Fantasy and Science Fiction novels. A winter project of mine is to create a spreadsheet of these and import them into GR.
Favorite authors of mine are: Terry Goodkind, Melanie Rawn, Robert Jordan, Tad Williams, Raymond E. Feist, Alandra CL, George R. R. Martin, Brent Weeks, Timothy Zahn, Brandon Sanderson, David Drake, Robin Hobb, Margaret Weiss, David Eddings, etc.
I am NOT a fan of Young Adult Fantasy

I feel you here, Alex. I get bored easily with YA. Some are just YA by name, like some of Sanderson´s work. Those are good.
On the other hand, there is a trend of calling fantasy books to things that are just porn with sparks flying. Nothing against sex, but I prefer books with a plot.

message boards aren't really my thing, and although it is one of my goals to do one of the monthly group reads, one day, mostly i don't have time and can't keep up so i never do them. lol. but i do pop in every once in a while to check the titles ^_-
anyhoo, my favorite genre is fantasy, but right now, most of my friends on here read only YA, and i get tired because when i start reading too much YA, i get really angry with all the shallowness and bad writitng. lol. so i'd like to get some fantasy-loving friends who can be reading similar things as me and give me some suggestions!!
my fave fantasy books are The Wheel of Time series, anything Brian Sanderson, the Kingkiller Chronicles, Harry Potter, anything Anne Rice, the Kushiel series... basically epic fantasy and romance... sometimes a bit of dark-horrory stuff.
so drop me a line if you want to!
