The Black Magician TRILOGY BY Trudi Canavan had me hooked from the first page and I highly recommend it.

message 2603: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca I guess it's my turn! I am Rebecca from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I'm a wife, mom and bartender. I love to read!! I can't even remember how I started reading Fantasy. I have just finished The Shannara series and Mistborn. Some of my favorite authors are Brandon Sanderson, Patrick Rothfuss and Stephen Lawhead. I am hoping to find some great recommendations from this group. I really love stories I can sink my teeth into. I am finishing The Demon Cycle book #3 right now and am looking for recommendations for what to start next.
Thanks for accepting me in this group.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments Hi Rebecca, welcome. Lots of good series out there, you'll probably get overloaded in no time. You didn't Mention Lord of the Rings so that's out there, Elizabeth Moon's Paksenarrion series, The Harry Dresden books by Jim Butcher or the Codex Alera books also by Butcher. Kristen Britain's Green Rider books, Brent Weeks Night Angel books and his current series starting with Black Prism..and a lot more. I'm sure you'll have a "to be read" list you can't possibly complete in one life time in no time. :)

Welcome again.

message 2605: by Ben (new)

Ben Yay Lawhead! I feel like he's one of the more obscure writers in the genre, but I really like most of his stuff. I also second Mike's recommendation of the Dresden Files and Brent Weeks' Lightbringer series and Night Angel series. And Lord of the Rings, obviously. Welcome to the group!

Hello Charlotte! Done with amber spyglass? I haven't read the last book yet but I love Pullman :) But I think the Golden Compass movie isn't fair. :|

Hi. I'm Ron Hummer. Glad to be part of this group. I have watched some science fiction shows like Fringe, the X Files, and Warehouse 13, which is my favorite. If there is a movie or TV show about time travel, then I'll be watching it.
I have not read any science fiction books because I could never find anything that interests me in the bookstore or in a review. I really want to see how this goes. The March reading for Storm Front (The Dresden Files,...
by Jim Butcher looks really good so I'll be joining the discussion. I'll be reading the February book as well. Hope to see other good books as well.

Ron

message 2610: by R.K. (new)

R.K. Troughton (RKTroughton) Hello all. My name is R.K. Troughton, and I'm a fantasy addict. I first recognized my addiction to fantasy at an early age reading Conan comic books. Later I was shocked to discover they had written novels inspired by the comic books. ;)

Typically I have one book on audio for my daily commute and one ebook or deadbook on my shelf for reading at home.

While I like science fiction and fantasy, I think that science fiction is best in the short form. I think that fantasy is best in the long form. (In general)

I enjoy all good writing no mater the genre.

Some of my favorite fantasy authors include:
Robert E. Howard
J.R.R Tolkien
Patricia McKillip
C.S. Lewis
Raymond E. Feist
Lois McMaster Bujold
George R.R. Martin

Currently reading:
Assassin's Apprentice- Robin Hobb (Audio)
Birds of Prey - Wilbur Smith (Paperback)

The C.S,Lewis and Lord of the Rings movies were so good there were books written about them to.... Just like all those Classics Illustrated comic books that inspired books.

I.B.Curious (ibcurious) Hello, I'm Chloe. This is my first group on Goodreads and I am looking foward to seeing how it works. I am an avid fantasy reader, but easily fall in love with Historical Fiction (Da Vinci Code is my favorite in this category.)
My favorite fantasy writers (I say writers because I love almost every one of thier books) are Brandon Sanderson, Patrick Rothfuss, Peter V. Brett, Brent Weeks, Mark Lawerence, and N. K. Jemisin, as well as countless others that I can't think of at the moment!

message 2627: by Trillian (last edited Mar 13, 2013 03:43AM) (new)

Trillian Hello! I signed up on goodreads a few months ago and thought it was time to join your group now :) Naturally my favourite genre is fantasy but I like science fiction too and sometimes I also cant't resist thrillers or historical novels. My favourite fantasy authors are Tad Williams - I'm currently in the middle of his Shadowmarch series -, of course Terry Pratchett and since the end of last year Jim Butcher. I'm going to start with the third book of his Dresden Files series today - I liked the first two parts and now I'm really looking forward to Grave Peril.
You can see that English is not my native language so please ignore my grammatical errors, typos or wrong choices of words :)

Sarah (sarahc123) welcome trillian, just finished The Dirty Streets of Heaven brilliant book reading Chronicles of the Black Company.

message 2630: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments Trillian, you handle English better than many native speakers :). I think you'll find that as good as the first 2 Dresden books were they actually get better. I think Butcher hits his stride about the 4th book. I envy you a bit in reading them for the first time, LOL.

Welcome, and enjoy.

message 2631: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Cardin Hello everyone! My name is Thomas Cardin and I am a new author...but I have been an avid reader since I first saw Spot run over 40 years ago.

Who are the fantasy authors who've made the greatest impression on me?

I spent my childhood reading Edgar Rice Burroughs and J.R.R. Tolkien.

In highschool I fell in love with Stephen R. Donaldson, Fritz Leiber, Michael Moorcock, and Anne McCaffrey (though she declared her work to be sci-fi)

Then along came Julian May, Elizabeth Moon, and a new favorite Dennis L. McKiernan

There have been a host of others, but these are the ones who have definitely been the cornerstones of fantasy for me.

Friend me and let's compare reading lists! I love to discuss fantasy and I would love to get feedback on who you think the best new voices of fantasy are.

message 2633: by Trillian (new)

Trillian @Sarah
I have this book on my wishlist since I knew about it :) I didn't have the time to start it so far, but it sounds really interesting - especially since it seems to be completely different than his other books I know.

@Sandra
Thank you :)

@Mike
I did like the first book of the Dresden Files, but Fool Moon is even better - the story is more interesting and it has the better villains. I heard that the books get better around the 3rd part, but now I'm really looking forward to the 4th book ;) btw. I'm about 20% done with Grave Peril and it's already better than its predecessors. Can't wait to start reading tonight!

message 2634: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments I burned through the Dresden books that were out when I found them and have snapped up each one since.

message 2635: by Julia (new)

Julia I'm Julia. I am a full time student in my final semester. I love paranormal, Historical and N/A books. I believe my fav author for fantasy author is Terry Goodkind.

message 2636: by Camilla (new)

Camilla Hansen (malazanshadowdancer) I'm Camilla, DK, just joined right about... Now.
I've been on Goodreads for a while now, led here by another bookclub, but I hoped to find more groups to expand my horizon of books!
I mean, one club = 1 book a month, sometimes 2. Not nearly enough for me to add to my to-read list ;)

I've found myself drawn more to epic fantasy than any other subgenre, but I try to read as much different as possible. Kind of, anyway. Still reading Malazan Book of the Fallen series, which I'm in love with.

And if you notice I haven't read any of the "must read" books, then they're probably on my list somewhere... But do feel free to recommend me something! :D

bwahahaha.....

message 2639: by Joe (new)

Joe (Roomsmoke) Hello, I'm Joe! Real life didn't allow me much time for reading fiction during the last decade. However, I decided to make reading-for-fun a priority this year. I'd heard about Goodreads, so I decided to give it a try to see if it might suggest any books to me. Yeah. Apparently so!

I'm a mid-30s academic and a longtime fantasy fan. However, I was never very widely read in the genre. I'd like to remedy that, so here I am!

message 2640: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments Well...oh welcome by the way, don't know what you've read or what you like. Have you read the iconic books like Lord of the Rings? do you like a specific sub-genre of fantasy? Or do you know, LOL.

message 2641: by Femmy (new)

Femmy | 166 comments Hi everyone. I'm Femmy from Indonesia. Got hooked on fantasy when I was an exchange student in the States. It was hard to find fantasy novels in the small imported books stores when I returned home, but I did get my hands on the Wheel of Time series (only book 2 and book 4) and some Weis-Hickman trilogies. Fortunately, not long after that, the Internet arrived and I could order books online to my heart's content.

message 2642: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments Cool, happy for you. I was going to ask how difficult it would be to order books. Welcome I hope you have fun here.

message 2643: by Graham (new)

Graham (crimegods) Hey y'all hey! My name is Graham and I have been reading fantasy since my cool aunt gave me lord of the rings in my freshman year of high school, and set me on my current path. I like big epics, and wild imaginative worlds. Some of my favorites are the Malazan Book of the Fallen, the Farseer trilogy, and the Coldfire trilogy as well... Trilogies really are excellent. I am looking forward to Sanderson's sequel to the way of kings that is due this year. My first goodreads group, so if you have any recommendations... I think next on my list is the lies of Locke Lemora!

Haha - I've read SOME in the genre (Tolkien, Lewis, Brooks, Hobb, Martin), but not much beyond the "big" names. Just read Sullivan's first Riyria book and Abercrombie's Blade Itself. Both were great. I'm excited to discover more new authors! Thanks for the welcome.

message 2645: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments Try Jim Butcher, he's great. Elizabeth Moon's Paksenarrion trilogy is one of my favorite "books" (I think of the trilogy as one book). You'll find lots of people here who will be eager to suggest books.

message 2646: by Graham (new)

Graham (crimegods) I couldn't finish the first Dresden book, but I heard the author really gets wind beneath his wings in the second book, maybe I will have to revisit. The funny thing is I was getting a physical and my doctor was laughing at a funny tattoo I had on my leg, while I was naked from the waist down, and that's when he recommended I try reading the Dresden books because of my sense of humor.

message 2647: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments If you're talking the Dresden books I like them all but he really hits his stride about the third book or fourth book. He also has an Epic fantasy series called the Codex Alera. it's pretty good to.

message 2648: by Rob (new)
