Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments Cool. Any of my friends here know that it's usually my first recommendation. I'm sure you picks will add to my "to be read" books also.

Tor (tor_roxburgh) I’m Tor Roxburgh and I’m from a small town in regional Victoria in Australia. I work in the visual arts and in a profession that’s largely unmentionable in this forum (i.e. I write books). I’m here as a reader. I love fantasy and I’m very keen on the more socially speculative end of the genre. My current favourites are:
Lean Hearn’s series called Tales of the Otori
China Mieville’s novel The City and the City
Ursula Le Guin's books (my absolute favourite is her science-fiction novel called The Dispossessed)
Robin Hobb’s Liveship Trader trilogy

This year, I’m keen to read lots of recent, good quality young adult fantasy (the more speculative, the better). If anyone has any suggestions, I’d love to hear them.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 1494 comments Welcome Tor. I don't have any recommendations for new young adult fantasy. One of my favorite authors is Robin McKinley.
The Blue Sword my favorite young adult book by her.

It's not unmentionable to tell us you're a writer. Just don't hawk your books and do talk to us about your reading. Thanks.

message 2556: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Hi Tor. I don't know if it's considered YA or not,but if you liked Mieville's work, I would highly recommend some of his other stuff, like the Bas-Lag novels, Perdido Street Station, The Scar, and Iron Council.

I have read a lot of Piers Anthony over the years, while Xanth novels are fun, my favorites would have to be the Tarot Series (3 books).

Emmy Kuipers Hello all. My name is Emmy and I live near Amsterdam in the Netherlands. I work as a BI specialist in IT but I'm also busy realising my dream to become a trainer. I absolutely love fantasy and have read most of the standard series, inlcuding Tolkien, Eddings, Jordan, Herbert, Zelazny etc.

At the moment I'm reading the last of the Black Magician books by Trudi Canavan which I find moderately entertaining. Besides fantasy I am also a great fan of Latin American literature.

Hello everyone. I'm Lauren and I live in the West of Scotland. I'm an avid fantasy reader and have been considering joining some fantasy book groups on the website for a while. I have finally gone for it, despite the fact that I might not get much reading done for the group. I'm currently reading Joe Abercrombie's The Blade Itself and I also have the Night Angel trilogy to finish off which I have been enjoying a lot. Like many, I'm also waiting patiently for the next installment of a Song of Ice And Fire.

Kenn Anderson (kennic64) Kenn Anderson: I am a traveling man, on the road 45 weeks out of the year. I read all the time and listen to audio books every chance I get. I enjoy fantacy books most of all. Favorite authors include: Terry Brooks, Raymond Feist, Terry Goodkind, Robert Jordan, and many others. I am always looking for new "good" recommendations.

message 2567: by Elena (new)

Elena (alostgeek) Hi, I'm Hellen. Other than fantasy, I love to read science fiction and thrillers. I can count on the fingers of one hand the people I know that like fantasy and science fiction novels, so it's great to find online book groups :)

At the moment I'm reading Game of Thrones. I don't know why I had never read it before, but I'm liking it a lot.

message 2568: by J.K. (new)

J.K. II (jkmillerii) Hi! J. K. Miller II here! I love fantasy and sci-fi. VERY different genres. That's primarily what I read and write, but I enjoy a good mystery as well. Not so much into thrillers, though. If you have a good book you've read or written and you want to pass it along, please tell me. Try to keep it primarily fantasy, but I will not deny a great read.

message 2584: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn Hoffman I read a lot of fantasy, though not exclusively. I'm a fan of Carol Berg, Guy Gavriel Kay, Patrick Rothfuss, GRR Martin, to name but a few. I'm always looking for new and good fantasy novels--or old and good fantasy that I might have missed over theyears.

message 2585: by Tasha (new)

Tasha (flyaway) Hey everyone, my name is Tasha, from Indonesia. I love fantasy, but I tend to read YA or general fiction as well.
I LOVE Brandon Sanderson's works. Also Joe Abercrombie, Cinda Williams Chima, Patrick Rothfuss, and some others...

My favorite series would have to be...
The Stormlight Archive,
The Kingkiller chronicles
The Broken Empire,
Raven's Shadow[tentative]

I have difficulty rating my favorites..anyway, I'm always open-minded to new/old books, so long as they're interesting.

Not much fantasy fans (they're not exactly book lovers) around my circles, so I joined this group :D

message 2587: by Sumi (new)

Sumi (scientia) Hello--my name is Sumi. I'm an obsessive reader and compulsive writer. My favorite fantasy-only writers are probably McKinley, Tolkien, LeGuin, and Stewart. I've just finished 2 fantasy novels (in a series) while on a break from medical school; I have 2 years to go. Sadly, the ability to discuss books and reading has been missing from my life for quite a while, both because of a lack of time, and very few fellow fans (say that five times fast), in med school.

message 2591: by Ben (new)

Ben Hi, I'm Ben and I've been a fan of the genre ever since I got my wisdom teeth pulled in high school and was laid up for about a week with nothing to do but read. My favorite authors in the genre are Brandon Sanderson (I have read all of his work in the Cosmere at least five times...the man is a genius), Brent Weeks (I wish he had more out - I really love what I have read thus far), Patrick Rothfuss (anxiously waiting on Doors of Stone) and J.R.R. Tolkien (let's face it: if you like fantasy, it's almost a prerequisite that you have to like Tolkien). I am especially interested in finding similar authors to those I listed above; I have read other popular authors and have been less than enthralled with their writing (don't kill me here, but I'm talking about George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire). So if you know anyone, please pass them along. :)

message 2596: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte (ceeceeroo) Hi I am Ceecee from London, UK. I have been reading fantasy, sci fi and just books in general for a very very long time. Nothing is better than escaping to some other world by sticking my nose in a book!
I love fantasy, sci-fi and thrillers/whodunnits. I also tend to read YA – Paolini – Inheritance series, Harry Potter, Veronica Roth, Kami Garcia, Hunger Games…
I am an obsessive reader, can’t get enough of books which my partner (who doesn’t read) finds insane. In particular I like series where the characters develops. Not so much a fan of one offs but I have been known to be wrong!
My favourites are Patrick Rothfuss, GRR Martin, Tolkien, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, True Blood (just can’t help myself!) as well as dystopia themed books.
I am keen to find new series so thought I would join for some sound advice :)

message 2597: by Ben (new)

Ben Welcome Ceecee! The Alcatraz series by Brandon Sanderson is a fun YA one if you haven't read it yet. His other stuff is pretty good too; Elantris and the Mistborn series are both a bit dystopian, and he's a great storyteller.

message 2599: by Cei (new)

Cei (READreaming_cei) Hello :) I am cei. Thanks for accepting me in this group. My social life is really compromised when I start grabbing a book. Some couldn't understand but what they didn't know is that I'm already acquainting myself with Kings and Queens, meeting wizards and druids, fighting the unseen forces, slaying some dragons and casting some spells and yet I'm still alive. It's not insanity but creativity. I really love fantasy <3

message 2600: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte (ceeceeroo) Thanks Ben & Mike for your welcomes. I already have Elantris on my bookshelf ready to read once I have finished working my way through Philip Pullman's Dark Materials, although finding it difficult to get oulled in.
I will take a look at the Alcatraz series and Mistborn today!
