My name is Amanda and I'm a reader (and writer, though as of yet unpublished) from Sweden. I have always loved fantasy and fantastical stories.
Some of my favourite writers are Robin Hobb, Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson and Terry Pratchett. Just to mention a few, there really are so many bloody good books out there.
I became a member on Goodreads just a few days ago and I'm quite excited!
Amanda

I love to read ~ Fiction is pretty much all I read, unless you count cookbooks and gardening type books.
I LOVE fantasy ~ I'm mostly into witches and the like, but I'll take a good fantasy any day of the week. I'm currently engrossed in Game of Thrones and pretty much shift from hating George R. R. Martin (for taking SOOOO long between books) and loving him. So, if you have any ideas of what I can read while I wait for him, I'd be grateful!!! ;-D ~ I look forward to meeting everybody!!!

I haven't really read that much yet but it's only been since last year that I found the headspace to get around reading more than just before bedtime!
well... that oughta be all! hope to learn a few new books that I can enjoy! :)

Feist
Eddings
Sanderson
Jordan
The Dark Tower .
......Harry Potter & Lord of The Rings have eluded me so far

My favorite Fantasy author is, of course, Tolkien! And as much as I LOVE The Hobbit and LOTR, I think The Silmarillion is my favorite.
My favorite living author is Brandon Sanderson, and The Mistborn Trilogy is my favorite contemporary book/series. But I love a lot of authors and books, including Urban Fantasy and some YA.
I have a love/hate relationship with Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth Series. Some of his books I LOVE and others -- well, not so much. ;) But he was the first "adult" fantasy I ever read and still think that when he is on his game, his stories -- and especially characters -- captivate me.
I also like George R.R. Martin, but A Song of Ice and Fire, as great as it is, is too depressing for me to take in large doses.
Anyway, there is so much out there I like that it's too much to mention. But generally, I prefer more "traditional" fantasy (Terry Brooks) as opposed to the the so called "grittier" stuff, but then I like Sword of Truth. So I read everything.
One quirk -- I used to read EVERY book I began, but now days don't have the patience to continue a book if I'm not enjoying it.

Anyway, welcome. :)

My name's Josh, I'm from Tropical North Queensland in Australia. My favourite authors are Tolkien, David Eddings, C.J. Cherryh, Feist, Pratchett, Frank Herbert, Lian Hearn, Douglas Adams and Stephen R Donaldson. I've read all the Harry Potter books but I'm not really a big fan of it.
At the moment I'm reading the Wheel of Time series, in the future I'd like to read the Earthsea novels by Ursula K Le Guin, the Xanth novels by Piers Anthony, The Dwarves series by Markus Heitz, The Darktower and The Children of Hurin.
I also read A Shadow In Summer by Daniel Abraham and I'd love to read the rest of the Long Price Quartet. I also considered reading George R R Martin but I watched the series and it just seems like one of those book series that you keep reading because you're pissed off with the outcome and want it to change lol, so I'm a bit nervous about reading it.

Yup! I love Harry Dresden. I'm currently going through that series now (finished book 4, which I thought was a little weak, but will definitely be going for book 5. I also like The Hollows series (by Kim Harrison) and the Kitty Norville series by Carrie Vaughn. That's pretty much the extent of my Urban Fantasy reading, though a few others look worthy of checking out.

LOL about the Game of Thrones comment. Yeah, even loyal fans are pretty ticked off. Martin is an amazing writer, I mean just amazing. BUT the books are incredibly frustrating, though strangely compelling. :)

Yeah I'm an escapist reader hahaha, life is frustrating enough without my books being frustrating too ;)

Started with the hobbit and lotr like a lot of members on here. Than it was endings and brooks then feist.
Looking forward to sharing my thoughts on books and hearing what others say.
Mark.

Currently, I work with toddlers as a teacher in a daycare. It's not exactly my dream job, or the best use of my degree, but it works for now. I am going back to school in August to work towards a degree in education so that I can become a third grade teacher. I also plan on doing another major in either microbiology or anthropology. I do enjoy some aspects of my job such as being able to teach my children and the joy that I receive when they finally catch on to what I've taught them. I also enjoy the smiles, hugs, and kisses that I get from my kids when I come to work in the mornings.
I am an avid reader and have been since I was a child. I generally read anything except westerns, romance, and inspirational/Christian books. I quite enjoy horror, fantasy, historical fiction, and mysteries. I have also gotten into the Quirk classics recently. Right now, I am reading Android Karenina. Classic literature is another favorite of mine with Edgar Allan Poe, Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, HP Lovecraft, Victor Hugo, and Gaston LeRoux being among my favorites.
I look forward to making new friends and taking part in book discussions.
-Elizabeth

My favorite books series so far has to be either Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta or The Queens Thief series. I cant wait to make new friends on here and look forward to having some fun in this group.

Welcome, Chris. I like reading in many different genres. I am currently reading two urban fantasy novels By A Thread by Jennifer Estep, To Walk the Night by E.S. Moore, a super hero novel, Breakout by Alisa Kwitney and a mainstream novel, The Ingredients of Love, by Nicolas Barreau.

My favorite series so far are:
A Wizard of Earthsea (Ursula K. LeGuin),
Discworld (Terry Pratchett),
Hobbit & Lord of the Rings (J.R.R. Tolkien),
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (Douglas Adams),
Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan),
Thursday Next (Jasper Fforde),
The Dark is Rising (Susan Cooper),
His Dark Materials (Phillip Pullman) and
graphic novel The Sandman (Neil Gaiman).

Nigel here. Brit born, but living in Arizona now. Love Pratchett beyond words. I snort way too much when I'm reading him. used to read LOTR every 5 years, but it's been 10 since the last one. I love McCaffrey's Pern novels and am currently trying to finish my first novel which sort of tips a hat towards her.
Currently reading the Imager by Modessit Jr. As always the detail in there is what gets me. I don't read near as much fiction as I used to, but then, I'm busier than I was.
OOps, forgot to give Elizabeth Moon a nod!

Anyway hi and welcome.

I'm a carpenter from B.C., in Canada. I'm a D&D nut; I've been playing since the '90s, and I've been running my own campaign for the past 6 years. I have a wonderful wife(who is also a big reader; I'm trying to get her to sign up with Goodreads!) and an equally wonderful five-month old baby girl named Arya. I'm also a major metalhead, and I've been singing in a heavy metal band called Tribune for the past 8 years, with whom I've toured Canada and the U.S.
As for books, I read pretty much exclusively fiction, these days. My favorite genre is Fantasy, but I also love reading classics of any genre(I've found that most classics are classics for a reason). Some of my favorite Fantasy books/series are A Song Of Ice And Fire by George R.R. Martin, anything by Robin Hobb, the Bas-Lag books by China Mieville, The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, the Fafhrd and Grey Mouser stuff by Fritz Leiber, and the Dying Earth series by Jack Vance. Oh, and this guy named Tolkien.
I look forward to talking books with everyone here!

I grew up on Tolkien and Lewis, so they will always be my favorites.

In real life I'm a technician in the pacific northwest. Prior to my work here in Oregon I was in the navy for many years. The service is where a lot of my reading took place in particular during some of the long deployments.
The books that really grab me are the character driven books. The protagonist for me has to be a character that I can respect and admire. I know a lot of the younger readers think that the white knight is unattainable but he's the guy I would like to be or at least like to know.
My favorite reads have been The Magicians Apprentice, the farseer novels by Robin Hobbs, almost anything from Brandon Sanderson and the Malazan books by Erickson to name a few.
Thats a little bit about myself and I'm looking forward to the discussions. :-)

Welcome.
I agree about the type of protagonist David (and before everyone here warns you what I'll recommend,LOL) Have you read The Deed of Paksenarrion?
