Introductions - tell us a little about yourself

So hi.

Anyway, my name is Darrell and I live down here in Houston, TX. I'm 35 and work in the accounting field. I would say I joined to see the interest of others when it comes to fantasy books and maybe dive into discussions of books I may have read or if the group goes with some that I have intentions on reading. I pretty much read a wide variety when it comes to fiction but fantasy has became my favorite.
Some of my more favorite authors or who at least have a series that is one of my more enjoyable reads would be:
Steven Erikson/Ian Esslemont
Joe Abercombie
JV Jones
George Martin
Brandon Sanderson
Brent Weeks
I have yet to read some of the other favorites like Patrick Rothfuss due to my rule about not diving into unfinished work. But...since I just broke that rule with Daniel Abraham's The Dragon's Path novel I will probably go with Rothfuss next.
Other than reading hobbies are generally writing, gaming (console and mmo's) and working out to relieve the stress my kids can put on my head *smiles*
So hello to all and hope you are all doing well.

I love a stand-alone fantasy when it's done right, but haven't found one in quite some time. Otherwise, like most Fantasy lovers, I have a number of authors whose series I have largely enjoyed:
David Eddings
Robert Jordan (looove what Sanderson has done to WOT to bring it to a close!)
Sanderson
Robin Hobb
Michael Sullivan
(and that's just a few of the favorites)
Hello to everyone and good reading!

I've been reading fantasy since forever, starting with the Mary Poppins books or maybe Enid Blyton's various fairytales :)
Favourite authors:
JRR Tolkien
Ursula Le Guin
Robin Hobb
Julian May
Charles de Lint
Garth Nix
Frank Herbert
JK Rowling
I teach yoga and I'm part of a writer's publishing co-operative but my writing tends towards magical realism rather than fantasy.
I have three kids, two cats and a dog and live in the wild and wet Pennine Hills in the north of England.
I'm always keen to hear of fantasy I haven't read yet - Charles de Lint is a recent addition from recommendations - so I'm hoping to get some new ideas here.

Howdy everyone. My name is Aaron, and I am addicted to Fantasy
(Crowd droans Hello)
I think I first realized that I had a problem when I sent out fake wedding invitations as an April fools joke one year, telling everyone that I was engaged to my favorite character (not telling, so don't ask).
However, instead of everyone reacting how I thought they would by saying "Hehe, that was pretty funny," most of them reacted with concern, thinking that I was serious and that I needed professional help.
That is when I thought, "Hmmm, If I'm giving off a vibe that makes people think I would do something like that seriously, I need to rethink my life a little bit."
I'm much more adjusted now, but I still keep a copy of the wedding invitation in my desk just to remind me not to over share when I meet new people.
Crap, I think I just over shared...

I also like to talk about books, go figure, eh?
Some of my favourite stories have been:
- Ulysses by Bernard Evslin
- A Wizard of Earthsea by LeGuin
- Sword of Truth series book 1 & 2 by Goodkind
- The Mallorean and The Belgariad - all.
- The Giver
- And a bunch of others I've forgotten.
And though I'm hip to the digital age, I really like the smell of a 1950s hardcover.
I'd love to chat more, through here, or on Twitter.

Best Wishes =D

So I joined hoping to find some recommendations.
Things I have read and liked
Lord of the Rings
Memory, Sorrow and Thorn
Book of Words series
Farseer Trilogy
The first three Wheel of Time books
Belgariad & Elenium series (although I have re-read these and they are not as good as I remember)
Things I have read and hated
Everything after book three in the Wheel of Time
Tawny Man Trilogy
Soldier Son Trilogy
Anything By Raymond Feist in the past 15 years
Anything by David Eddings in the past 20 years
If anyone has any suggestions or wants to send me a friend request....go ahead.

Scott, if you are craving a bit more depth, you might take a look at Guy Gavriel Kay - The Lions of al-Rassan is exceptionally good.

Thanks Janny - I flew through the first two books in the Fionavar Tapestry but couldn't finish the third (I've tried on six or seven different occasions)...never tried the Lions of Al-Rassan but I'll buy it tonight and give it a try.

Have you tried any of LE Modesitt's Recluse series? They aren't high fantasy but they are really good stories.

I remember that I read the very first book the Recluse series many years ago...I had totally forgotten about the series...time to give it a try again

I am avid reader and my favorite authors in this category are George R. R. Martin, J.R.R Tolkien and Neil Gaiman.

I don't think I have any favorite author. Or at least there's too many to list.. I like reading fantasy series and I'm currently waiting for:
- Robert Jordan/ Brandon Sanderson: A memory of light.
- Brandon Sanderson: Highprince of war.
- Seanan McGuire: The chimes of midnight.
- Partrick Rothfuss: The doors of stone.
- Elspeth Cooper: The wandering moon.
- Charlaine Harris: Sookie Stackhouse # 11, 12, 13.. (So many books, so little time).
- Ken Follet: The pillars of earth part 3.
And while I'm waiting - Any MUST READ - suggestions?:)

Lindi, have you found Elizabeth Moon's Fantasy? (I'm not as taken with her space opera, but love her fantasy.)
I love her Paksenarrion trilogy (The Deed of Paksenarrion) and the ones that come after it, the 4th of which comes out this year. The Deed of Paksenarrion is a one volume set of her trilogy, it says it's book 3 through 5 but the first 2 are basically prequels and not essential to the story (in other words I didn't like them as much, LOL). But I do suggest her Paks' World books. Paks is a young woman who wants to be a soldier and you follow her life.
Also you didn't mention Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden books. I'd recommend those also.
Enjoy and again, welcome.

Welcome Dave - I actually looked up your book on Amazon and it looks great so...I bought it a little while ago...I'll let you know how I like it.

Mike - I've seen the Paksenarrion trilogy on the shelf of the bookstore - for some reason I've never bought it and I've never known anyone who has read it. Is there another series that it's similar to so I could have a better idea of her writing style (e.g. Robert Jordan writes different than J.V. Jones who writes different than Robin Hobb etc.)

The second book: Divided Allegiance picks up Paks' life as a "free sword" I won't say more than that except it's a very involving book and DON'T FINISH IT WITHOUT THE THIRD ON HAND! The ending chapters are tough.
The third book:Oath of Gold follows Paks to a great fulfillment that I won't go into but for me it's very satisfying.
The one volume trilogy: The Deed of Paksenarrion is how I read it. I read the books that are called "1 and 2" but as I said above they're more like prequels and I don't care for them as much.
In short...is it too late to say that? These are among my all time favorite books. If you'd like to read it here's my review:

Ok you've convinced me...this is going on my "to read" list. thank you

I've read the two first.. Guess I'll have to look into the rest:) And I'll check out Harry Dresden

Obviously David Eddings is one of my favorite series. As someone else said on this thread, you can't read his alone or out of order. Well, 'Redemption of Athalus' you can. (Wow, I hope I spelled that title right.) Melanie Rawn is sort of the same with her Dragon Prince series.
I've read lots of fantasy, but obviously have a lot more to read. Looking forward to some book discussion here with like minded people. Thanks for having me and I promise I will try to behave. :D

Grew up in Spain and then New Zealand, and have had a passion for reading and writing since I read my first book.
To be honest, I only recently started getting into fantasy, and found to my surprise, that I thoroughly enjoy it. Some of my favourite reads would be:
Game of Thrones
The Pendragon series
Eragon (The inheritance cycle)
The Fellowship of the ring
The hobbit
I am on the lookout for other great reads!
Thanks and hope to hear more from you!
