message 2457: by Darrell (new)

Darrell (darrellr) Oops. Joined the group a bit ago but never did this. Or maybe I did and I don't remember because my memory works on a 24-hour basis *smiles* After that you got a 50/50 shot.

Anyway, my name is Darrell and I live down here in Houston, TX. I'm 35 and work in the accounting field. I would say I joined to see the interest of others when it comes to fantasy books and maybe dive into discussions of books I may have read or if the group goes with some that I have intentions on reading. I pretty much read a wide variety when it comes to fiction but fantasy has became my favorite.

Some of my more favorite authors or who at least have a series that is one of my more enjoyable reads would be:

Steven Erikson/Ian Esslemont
Joe Abercombie
JV Jones
George Martin
Brandon Sanderson
Brent Weeks

I have yet to read some of the other favorites like Patrick Rothfuss due to my rule about not diving into unfinished work. But...since I just broke that rule with Daniel Abraham's The Dragon's Path novel I will probably go with Rothfuss next.

Other than reading hobbies are generally writing, gaming (console and mmo's) and working out to relieve the stress my kids can put on my head *smiles*

So hello to all and hope you are all doing well.

message 2458: by Greg (new)

Greg Baldwin Hi, my name is Greg and I live in Richmond, Va. I joined this group because fantasy fiction has always been my favorite genre. The Hobbit was the first book I read. I'm a huge fan of Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman for both the Dragonlance and Death's Gate series. Also R. A. Salvatore, C.S. Lewis are also other favorites. Outside of fantasy I'm a huge Robert B. Parker and Louis L'Amour fan.

message 2459: by Angela (new)

Angela (asaciuk) Hi, I'm Angela and I live in Northwestern Ontario, Canada. I'm an avid reader of most genres, but my first love is the Fantasy genre. (I've even been known to read stuff like 50 Shades of Grey when I was lacking in inspiration in the fantasy genre). I joined Goodreads only a few months ago - how did I manage to miss this website?!?! Between Goodreads and my recent introduction to the world of ebooks, I've been finding myself reading at a huge rate, and introduced to new authors such as Michael Sullivan (ooh...such a big new fan!).

I love a stand-alone fantasy when it's done right, but haven't found one in quite some time. Otherwise, like most Fantasy lovers, I have a number of authors whose series I have largely enjoyed:

David Eddings
Robert Jordan (looove what Sanderson has done to WOT to bring it to a close!)
Sanderson
Robin Hobb
Michael Sullivan

(and that's just a few of the favorites)

Hello to everyone and good reading!

message 2462: by Jae (new)

Jae (jae5) Hi I'm Julie from the UK.
I've been reading fantasy since forever, starting with the Mary Poppins books or maybe Enid Blyton's various fairytales :)

Favourite authors:
JRR Tolkien
Ursula Le Guin
Robin Hobb
Julian May
Charles de Lint
Garth Nix
Frank Herbert
JK Rowling

I teach yoga and I'm part of a writer's publishing co-operative but my writing tends towards magical realism rather than fantasy.
I have three kids, two cats and a dog and live in the wild and wet Pennine Hills in the north of England.
I'm always keen to hear of fantasy I haven't read yet - Charles de Lint is a recent addition from recommendations - so I'm hoping to get some new ideas here.

message 2463: by Megan (new)

Megan Donnelly | 7 comments Hello my name is Megan and I'm excited to join this book group. I hail from Salt Lake City, UT, and am studying for degrees in history and library science. Ever since my dad used to read The Hobbit to my sister and I when we were little, I have loved the fantasy genre. I read the Lord of the Rings trilogy every few years, as well as the Dune Chronicles and the Death Gate Cycle. My favorite fantasy authors are Tolkien (that's a given, eh), George R.R. Martin, Stephen King for his Dark Tower series, R.A. Salvatore, Jaqueline Carey, and Jorge Borges.

Aaron Yeager (Stands Up)
Howdy everyone. My name is Aaron, and I am addicted to Fantasy

(Crowd droans Hello)

I think I first realized that I had a problem when I sent out fake wedding invitations as an April fools joke one year, telling everyone that I was engaged to my favorite character (not telling, so don't ask).

However, instead of everyone reacting how I thought they would by saying "Hehe, that was pretty funny," most of them reacted with concern, thinking that I was serious and that I needed professional help.

That is when I thought, "Hmmm, If I'm giving off a vibe that makes people think I would do something like that seriously, I need to rethink my life a little bit."

I'm much more adjusted now, but I still keep a copy of the wedding invitation in my desk just to remind me not to over share when I meet new people.

Crap, I think I just over shared...

message 2466: by K.R. (new)

K.R. Cox (krcox) Hey there. I'm K. R. Cox, and thought I would introduce myself. I'm a fantasy/scifi fiction author and love hearing from my readers( That was probably less than five seconds? LOL! j/k.

I also like to talk about books, go figure, eh?

Some of my favourite stories have been:
- Ulysses by Bernard Evslin
- A Wizard of Earthsea by LeGuin
- Sword of Truth series book 1 & 2 by Goodkind
- The Mallorean and The Belgariad - all.
- The Giver
- And a bunch of others I've forgotten.

And though I'm hip to the digital age, I really like the smell of a 1950s hardcover.

I'd love to chat more, through here, or on Twitter.
You can find me at: http://twitter.com/OrrykDain

I look forward to chatting with you!

Best Wishes =D

message 2470: by Scott (new)

Scott (dodger1379) I'm Scott from Upstate New York (between Buffalo & Rochester). I read most genre's but my oldest love will always be fantasy. I joined this group because I don't read that much fantasy anymore...not because I don't want to but because I can't find any that I like.

I like high fantasy, epic fantasy.
I don't like vampires or werewolves or witches.
So I joined hoping to find some recommendations.

Things I have read and liked
Lord of the Rings
Memory, Sorrow and Thorn
Book of Words series
Farseer Trilogy
The first three Wheel of Time books
Belgariad & Elenium series (although I have re-read these and they are not as good as I remember)

Things I have read and hated
Everything after book three in the Wheel of Time
Tawny Man Trilogy
Soldier Son Trilogy
Anything By Raymond Feist in the past 15 years
Anything by David Eddings in the past 20 years

If anyone has any suggestions or wants to send me a friend request....go ahead.

Scott, if you are craving a bit more depth, you might take a look at Guy Gavriel Kay - The Lions of al-Rassan is exceptionally good.

Thanks Janny - I flew through the first two books in the Fionavar Tapestry but couldn't finish the third (I've tried on six or seven different occasions)...never tried the Lions of Al-Rassan but I'll buy it tonight and give it a try.

Have you tried any of LE Modesitt's Recluse series? They aren't high fantasy but they are really good stories.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments I always considered them High Fantasy there is a good deal of magic, though of a different kind. I read through most of them on a "Recluse" kick some years ago.

David Holley Hello everyone! My name is David Holley and I live in Philadelphia, PA. I worked as a creative director in advertising for twenty years but recently decided to reinvent myself and became a writer. My first novel was self published in November of this year, entitled EDEN. It's the first book in a series I am currently writing.

I am avid reader and my favorite authors in this category are George R. R. Martin, J.R.R Tolkien and Neil Gaiman.

Lindi Aagedal | 14 comments Hi. My name is Lindi and I'm from Norway. I've been reading books (almost) forever, and as soon as I learned english, I started reading everything I could get my hands on in the fantasy genre (Norwegians prefer writing crime and sappy stories).

I don't think I have any favorite author. Or at least there's too many to list.. I like reading fantasy series and I'm currently waiting for:
- Robert Jordan/ Brandon Sanderson: A memory of light.
- Brandon Sanderson: Highprince of war.
- Seanan McGuire: The chimes of midnight.
- Partrick Rothfuss: The doors of stone.
- Elspeth Cooper: The wandering moon.
- Charlaine Harris: Sookie Stackhouse # 11, 12, 13.. (So many books, so little time).
- Ken Follet: The pillars of earth part 3.

And while I'm waiting - Any MUST READ - suggestions?:)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments Hi, welcome.

Lindi, have you found Elizabeth Moon's Fantasy? (I'm not as taken with her space opera, but love her fantasy.)

I love her Paksenarrion trilogy (The Deed of Paksenarrion) and the ones that come after it, the 4th of which comes out this year. The Deed of Paksenarrion is a one volume set of her trilogy, it says it's book 3 through 5 but the first 2 are basically prequels and not essential to the story (in other words I didn't like them as much, LOL). But I do suggest her Paks' World books. Paks is a young woman who wants to be a soldier and you follow her life.

Also you didn't mention Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden books. I'd recommend those also.

Enjoy and again, welcome.

Mike - I've seen the Paksenarrion trilogy on the shelf of the bookstore - for some reason I've never bought it and I've never known anyone who has read it. Is there another series that it's similar to so I could have a better idea of her writing style (e.g. Robert Jordan writes different than J.V. Jones who writes different than Robin Hobb etc.)

message 2486: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments Scott, I liked her/like her better. I like Jones but she didn't draw me in as much. If you've seen my reviews of Jordan you'll know that I like the first 5 or 6 volumes of the Wheel of Time but then think it crashed and burned as a long drawn out soap opera. The Paksenarrion (Paks) books don't (in my opinion of course) do that. To avoid spoilers...the first book about Paks Sheepfarmer's Daughter covers Paks leaving home and her training as a soldier. It covers about 4 years in her life and what she goes through from her first training and experiences fighting as a mercenary to the experiences she has in a war to destroy an "evil overlord" (not sure if the guy read the "list" of not, LOL).

The second book: Divided Allegiance picks up Paks' life as a "free sword" I won't say more than that except it's a very involving book and DON'T FINISH IT WITHOUT THE THIRD ON HAND! The ending chapters are tough.

The third book:Oath of Gold follows Paks to a great fulfillment that I won't go into but for me it's very satisfying.

The one volume trilogy: The Deed of Paksenarrion is how I read it. I read the books that are called "1 and 2" but as I said above they're more like prequels and I don't care for them as much.

In short...is it too late to say that? These are among my all time favorite books. If you'd like to read it here's my review:

M.L. Chesley (melchesley) | 10 comments Hi everyone. I'm new to the group. I live in Alaska. (Hopefully moving to Washington soon.) I'm an avid reader and have loved fantasy for many, many moons. Some of my favorites are Raymond E. Feist, David Eddings, J. R. R. Tolkien, Melanie Rawn, K. C. May, George R. R. Martin. He's a new favorite! I finally got to read 'Game of Thrones' and loved it. Sadly, I have to wait for the next books. I'll buy them with my allowance. ;)
Obviously David Eddings is one of my favorite series. As someone else said on this thread, you can't read his alone or out of order. Well, 'Redemption of Athalus' you can. (Wow, I hope I spelled that title right.) Melanie Rawn is sort of the same with her Dragon Prince series.
I've read lots of fantasy, but obviously have a lot more to read. Looking forward to some book discussion here with like minded people. Thanks for having me and I promise I will try to behave. :D

Alex Just Hi everyone,

Grew up in Spain and then New Zealand, and have had a passion for reading and writing since I read my first book.

To be honest, I only recently started getting into fantasy, and found to my surprise, that I thoroughly enjoy it. Some of my favourite reads would be:

Game of Thrones
The Pendragon series
Eragon (The inheritance cycle)
The Fellowship of the ring
The hobbit

I am on the lookout for other great reads!

Thanks and hope to hear more from you!
