message 201: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey hello! my name is Lindsey. i hail from a land filled with luscious rolling hills of once green grass. alas, february has rendered the landscape uniformly colorless.

4 years ago i read Onion Girl, by Charles De Lint, and have been hopelessly addicted to his urban fantasies ever since. i also dearly love when Orson Scott Card straddles the line that divides sci-fi and fantasy, like he did in Songmaster.

i'm a sucker for books about dragons, enchantments, certain doom, curses, legends, and magic. i'd rather have my faeries be grown up sized and male with sex appeal and a mischievous streak a mile wide than be miniature, girly wish-granters. not there's a thing wrong with Tinkerbell

*claps hands together

just saying...

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Hi Lindsey! Welcome to the group! :)

message 203: by Leslie Ann (new)

Leslie Ann (leslieann) | 224 comments Hi Lindsey and welcome!

I'm with you! I can't stand little twittery faeries. I like grown-up sized, sexy elven types myself, with grown-up appetites, which is why I chose to write about just such elves in my books. My book,Griffin's Daughter is this month's Reading Selection and contains lots of grown-up elven types. I invite you to check out the discussion threads. The ones with spoilers are clearly marked.

message 204: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) Hi all,
My name is Kathy and I seem to be reading more fantasy these days. My son introduced me to or encouraged me to read some in the fantasy genre about 10 years ago or so when he was a kid (now almost 22). As I was always active in encouraging and fostering his love of reading, I knew I had to start reading more of his favorite genre. He didna steer me wrong (sorry, I'm reading Outlander now and the Scottish conversation is sticking with me). I especially love time travel, so Outlander is great. My favorite time travel book is Doomsday Book by Connie Willis.

message 205: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey thanks for the welcomes, Becky and Leslie! thanks too for the road sign pointing to Griffin's Daughter. i can't wait to check it out

welcome, Kathy. time travel is a blast - god bless your son for exposing you to the joys of fantasy.

message 206: by Gabriela (new)

Gabriela (machetera11) Hi I'm Gabi! I have to say I am pretty much addicted to fantasy books because that's about all that I read. I am writing a book now and I hope to finish by the time I get out of high school. Iposted some of my writing if you'd like to read it! Feel free to criticize!

Andrea Kulman (andreakulman) Hi there. I am Andrea, mom to five, and married to Superman. I have been writing since I can remember. Within a year(5/2008-2/2009) I have had two books published and released. Other than writing- I do enjoy reading all genres. My family volunteers for Operation Care Package of Michigan. My children all have things going on besides school- ie. swimming, dive, cub scouts, marching band, symphony band, concert band. Therefore, my reading and writing is sometimes on hold... unless, homework counts. Welcome to the all the new members & nice to meet all of the ones that have been here.

Robin- I think all your information is GREAT! Thank you for taking the time to inform all of us newbies...

message 213: by meleah (last edited Feb 25, 2009 10:33AM) (new)

meleah (meleahreads) Hey - I'm Meleah and I'm a graphic designer in NC. I've always loved reading and I'm never without a book. I've recently been reading mostly fantasy so this group has provided a lot of great suggestions. Some of my favorite fantasy authors are:

JRR Tolkien
Neil Gaiman
Orson Scott Card
Diana Wynne Jones
Ursula K. LeGuin
Patrick Rothfuss

I have a LOT of new stuff in my to-read stack - including the Wheel of Time series, the Sword of Truth series, the Otherland series, Mistborn ... etc. I also just started The Crown Conspiracy which I'm enjoying a lot.

message 214: by Manal (new)

Manal (manals) Hello everyone. My name is Manal and I recently joined Good Reads! I've always loved to read and have enjoyed a variety of genres and Fantasy is by far has always been one of my favorites. Its so imginative and compelling. I just wish I had the time to read more! I just had my first baby, a little baby boy, and am already trying to convert him :-) Amongst many, I adore George R. R. Martin & his Throne of Ice & Fire series, Robin Hobb & Jacqueline Carey. I just finished Brandon Sanderson's Elantris & had a rolicking good time. On my to-read list (once I finish my currently-reading list that is) one of the writers I want to read is Joe Ambercrombie. I'm also looking for recomendations from people so please feel free to tell me what I should read!

message 215: by Craig (new)

Craig Halloran HELLO!My name is Craig Halloran and I am from charleston WV and I have been ready fantasy since junior high and it is pretty much my reading preference. I like to find stories that are short adventures and not epic and quest riddled. If you have a recommendation let me know. Being that I am picky about fantasy I recently published my own fantasy called, The Darkslayer.

www.xlibris.com\thedarkslayer

Writing a book was long and tough, but I did it and I want to know what people think, but most importantly I like to entertain the reader, on paper as well as in person. I hope to make lots of friends here on goodreads. My friend that first got me into fantasy got me into this. I have him to thank.

message 231: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tawnycat) Chris blushing? Now that's something I'd like to see *winks at him*

Hello everyone. Name's Tanya Tungilik, from The Great White North of Canada :) I love fantasy books. Right this moment I'm listening to The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan. I've read the book once before, but I wanted to revisit it. I'm also reading Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse, it's not bad so far. I also love horror and thrillers, and only love the best of authors from those genres, Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

message 232: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments Welcome, Tanya. Took you long enough to join up. I guess it took my blushing to bring you out....

Seriously though. It's a great group and you'll love it...

message 233: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tawnycat) Thanks Chris, but this was the first group I signed up for when I created my Goodreads account. I think you may be right though, it took your blushing to bring me out to say hello ;)

Hello Robin, *smiles* I look forward to receiving your husband's book.

Leslie Ann (leslieann) | 224 comments Here's me waving hello to all you newbies!! So glad you all decided to join our now-no-longer-so-little group.

And thank you for the welcome :)

message 236: by Todd (last edited Mar 05, 2009 07:32AM) (new)

Todd I'm Todd. I live in Maryland.

I just got interested in sci-fi/fantasy in the last couple of years after reading lots of mysteries and thrillers. I still enjoy them, but after a while, they were all starting to read like the same book over and over.

I've been reading mostly fantasy lately, with a couple mysteries still thrown in from favorite authors:

My favorite fantasy books, so far:
Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
Name of the Wind by Pat Rothfuss
Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher
Codex Alera by Jim Butcher
Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson.

I just finished The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon.

Next up is Lamentation, by Ken Scholes, on recommendation from a couple of the blogs that I read.

I'd love to read A Game of Thrones, but I put it down after 200 pages because it was requiring more of my attention that I could give it at that time. It is a future vacation book now.

message 237: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tawnycat) Welcome Todd! :)

message 238: by Eric (new)

Eric Hall (ehall105) Hello everyone. My name is Eric and I hail from Columbus, Ohio (Hi Robert) and am married to my wonderful wife Angela, who is also an avid reader.

I am a mild mannered Accountant by day (ok, maybe not so mild mannered…lol) and an avid reader the rest of my waking time. I am fairly new to the fantasy genre having only been reading it the last couple of years…so I have a lot of catching up to do. I started off reading stuff like Weis/Hickman’s Dragonlance series and R.A. Salvatore’s stuff involving the Forgotten Realms. Yes…I used to be a big role-player back in the day:-)

Reading those books has re-fueled my interest in the Fantasy genre and I am ready to move on to the “big people books” now. Although I have to say, I do love Drizzt!

I have reserved from my local library The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan and The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I look forwarding to reading them and discussing with everyone my thoughts. I am excited about my journey and I am glad to have all of you as my travel mates.

Cheers,

Eric

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 916 comments Welcome, Todd and Eric.

message 241: by Adrianna (new)

Adrianna (adriannas) Hi Eric. It's a pleasure to meet you. It's always fun to meet a retired role player, lol. I also like R.A. Salvatore, but it has been a while since I have read one of Salvatore's books.

message 242: by James (new)

James (radiationangels) My name is James Daniel Ross. I am an avid reader of fantasy. I began in the fourth grade with the hobbit, and went on to gaming novels and so forth. I got a job in the gaming industry writing Children of the Sun. I started writing my first fantasy and (surprise) it turned into a military science fiction novel! I have written The Radiation Angels: The Chimerium Gambit, co-wrote Snow and Steel, The Radiation Angels: The Key to Damocles (release in April), and a horde of short stories. I'm almost done with my first fantasy novel, and then I'm back to military science fiction for the next.

I usually read whatever is the most different from what I am writing. That means a lot of fantasy as I work on RA books, and a lot of science fiction as I'm writing this fantasy novel.

Good to meet everyone!

James Daniel Ross

message 243: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (tawnycat) Welcome Henry and James!

Henry, I have and still do Roleplay (online), and I enjoy it very much. I have The Crown Conspiracy in the mail, and can't wait to read it. I like to write as well, only Chris Haught can tell you what my writing is like. I like drinking tea too, especially when I'm 'out on the land'.

James, military science fiction? I'd love to read it! I have always wanted to be in the military, and I love fiction.

Maybe one day I will write my own short story or even a novel. I'm not quite there yet though...

message 244: by Adrianna (new)

Adrianna (adriannas) What role plays do you participate in Tanya? I role play too! Just love it. I participate in some groups on IMVU, and I have one on Yahoo.

JG (Introverted Reader) Hello! I'm from the mountains of western North Carolina. I've always read fantasy. I remember wandering through my library and only looking for books that had the purple unicorn sticker on the books that meant they were fantasy. I've branched out a lot since then, but fantasy is still my first love. My very favorite author is Charles deLint. I'll be glad when he starts writing adult books again. I do not enjoy his young adult books. Anyway, I've recently gotten hooked on A Song of Fire and Ice and The Black Jewels trilogy. I loved The Name of the Wind and I'm eagerly waiting for the sequel. What else?... I also love Guy Gavriel Kay, Neil Gaiman (although he can be hit or miss for me), Kushiel's Legacy series, Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series (I somehow have never picked up his Storm Front books, but they are on my list), you get the idea. If it's well-written fantasy, I probably love it. I have very little patience for bad writing or for books where I have to learn a whole new language and/or culture. I think I've seen quite a few of you guys around in other groups, but it's nice to find other people who love fantasy.

ETA: I love how organized you guys are with your discussion threads!

message 246: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) JG, I've read 3-4 books by Charles deLint and absolutely loved them. I think I'm about due to read another one, thanks for the reminder.

Thanks Henry and JG for the "Crown Conspiracy Nod" - and Welcome TNBBC'er JG!

message 249: by Leslie Ann (new)

Leslie Ann (leslieann) | 224 comments Hello to all the new members! I noticed a few people mentioning they are either currently into RP gaming or are retired RP gamers. I'm in the latter category--just not enough time for it these days, but back in my *sigh* youth, I was pretty hard core into AD&D.

My dearest college friends and I all met originally because I went looking for someone to teach me how to play D&D. I found a guy, and along with his roommate, and several other dorm mates, we started a D&D group that stayed together for a single campaign that lasted--I kid you not--10 years. We all got our bachelor's degrees and several of us also got advanced degrees in that time, all the while spending huge chunks of week-end time gaming. What a bunch of geeks we were! I still am-- a geek, that is-- and proud of it!! And yes, I have more than adequate social skills!

message 250: by Heather (new)
