Introductions - tell us a little about yourself

Thanks for the welcome, Paladin. Do you know how we can post videos so that the whole group can see it?

Hope you like it.

This is such a wonderful story! I always knew reading was important, but this is a great example of why.
I do worry sometimes about the current trend for gritty realism, with protagonists who are unrepentant thieves, assassins, rapists and the like. Not many honourable role-models there.
Welcome to the group Derrik. Hope you enjoy the discussions.

Believe me, we'll all have books to recommend, LOL.

I do hope so! :)

Have you (and all my friends know what I'll recommend first, LOL) The Deed of Paksenarrion? This edition says it's volumes 3 through 5 but that's misleading. What they call the first 2 are prequels and don't effect this trilogy (they're not quite as good either, though not bad I suppose). The Paksenarrion trilogy is one of my all time favorites.
I like the Dresden books and liked the first one better than you did. Just for info, a lot of people agree that the books get a lot better around book 3 or 4.
The Green Rider series is good to.
Have you read Roger Zelazny's Amber books?
Just a few. I'll check your book shelves and see if I can get an idea what you like. Feel free to look at mine.

Hi, Anachronist, welcome aboard. This is what I love about Goodreads - making friends, finding new discussion groups, getting great ideas for books, bumping into Mike and hearing how wonderful The Deed of Paksenarrion is... ;-) (It's on my to-read shelf, honest, Mike!).

I wonder how much money I've helped Elizabeth Moon make?
Oh well.

:D. I like your enthusiasm for this series.

I look forward to becoming inspired by this treasure chest of fantasy goodness!

My favorite authors are Brandon Sanderson, Kate Elliott, Kristen Britain, and the great Robert Jordan.

My favorite authors are J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula Le Guin, George Martin, Susanna Clarke, Brandon Sanderson, Neil Gaiman, Andrzej Sapkowski and Lord Dunsany.
I also read alternate history, historical fiction and magical realism.
P.S. Sorry for my terrible English, I'm still learning.

Welcome! I remember those days . . . did a lot of knitting. :D
And, your English is so much better than . . . . my whatever language you speak in Lithuania? :D

I just started getting into reading this year. I'm currently increasing my drawing skills and was looking for a way to pound sci-fi and fantasy info into my brain. I came across an Episode of Feng Zhu's Design Cinema where he recommended Perdido Street Station and thought that it was a good place to start...it was EXCELLENT!
Anyhow, I researched and found PSS belongs to a sub genre called the New Weird, found that book list online, and made a commitment to read the most interesting (to me) on that list. I'll have to admit though, I'm getting pretty tired of "decadent urban fantasy".
For now, after being fully entertained by James Barclay's Dawnthief and Adrian Tchaikovsky's Empire in Black and Gold, I think i'm not interested in the New Weird anymore, and just want to read something fast paced and good, that also brings forth new sci fi / fantasy ideas.
I have stowed away Viriconium for when I run out of books to read. And have also packed away China Mieville's The Scar, only because Perdido Street was so excellent, i found it made subsequent books i read not seem as good. I don't want that to happen again after reading The Scar. I've seen online reviews that sometimes praise The Scar even higher than Perdido Street Station, so I will save it as my secret weapon for when i really run out of books. I did, though, read Mieville's Iron Council since it didn't get as high reviews as the other 2 books.
I look forward to reading the reviews from this groups memebers, thanks for having me here!

I'm Jess. I'm just getting around to introducing myself as my newborn is six weeks now. I'm looking forward to being a part of the group.

I'm Katie, I’m 17 and from Connecticut! I was just scanning through some fantasy book clubs (as I'm a fantasy junkie) and as soon as I saw you guys were reading Elantris by Brandon Sanderson, I just had to join! He's one of my favorite authors, and I absolutely love this book!
I first got hooked on fantasy when I was very little and the Harry Potter books first came out, but soon after fell in love with J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit, followed by Lord of the Rings ; I was so in love with the depth of the worlds that he had created, I just couldn’t get over it.
While my favorite fantasy genre has to be high fantasy (I’m a sucker for epics and the amount of detail that usually goes into those worlds) I read anything I can get my hands on from dragons to wizards to vampires; I’m not too picky and I love to explore.
My favorite authors include JK Rowling, J.R.R Tolkien, Brandon Sanderson, G.R.R. Martin, Robert Jordan, and Alison Croggan (though I feel like I’m forgetting someone), and my favorite series are Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire, Wheel of Time, Mistborn Trilogy, Books of Pellinor and Lord of the Rings.
Anyway, it’s great to be here and I’m so glad to have an excuse to re-read Elantris!

I'm not really interested in much young adult fiction right now, but I did recently read and enjoy The Hunger Games. In that vein, I'm searching out post-apocalyptic futures, though not necessarily dystopian (in which there is an extreme class difference). I thought this group might be a good place to find interesting points of view.
I'm not very much into arguing the admirable characteristics of any authors -- people like what they like and that's about all there is to say about that. One person's trash is another's treasure, and so on.

Hi Jed and welcome. I have just read Pure by J Baggott which is a post apocalyptic novel. I thought it was different from a lot of the dystopian stuff around at the moment. Just a suggestion :)

Joined a few days go. Am fairly new to reading fantasy, mostly I've read Pratchett, Gaiman, Rowling, Fforde, Tolkein and some Goodkind.
Joined because I want to read more of the genre and honestly it's difficult to know where to start!
Currently reading Fforde's latest 'The Woman Who Died a Lot' and next up is A Song of Fire and Ice: Game of Thrones and, since joining, His Majesty's Dragon.

after ASOIAF, the next thing I would recommend, if you like really challenging reads, is Malazan book of the fallen by Steven Erikson, and the Malazan novels by I.C. Esslemont... Forge of Darkness by Erikson should also be good, although havent gotten to that one yet :) :P

Cheers! Have added Gardens of the Moon to my read list - sounds really interesting.

I like Jasper fforde too! Recently read The Eyre Affair.

He's brilliant isn't he? I've just finished the seventh Thursday Next book so have officially read everything he's had published!
Have you read his Dragonslayer books yet? Well worth a look if not. They're some of the best children's books I've read in a long while.

I stumbled across goodreads only last week and found this group today.
I'm a stay-at-home mum to 3 young children, I'm from Belfast in Northern Ireland and I feel very guilty everytime I buy a book since I'm spending my husbands money :D
I have a serious book addiction which I blame on my aunt who introduced me to David Eddings Belgariad series at the age of 8. I have memories of lurking in the adult sci-fi/fantasy section of my local library when I was 9 or 10 and getting very odd looks from the adults who were there!
Favourite authors include Anne & Todd McCaffrey, David Eddings, Terry Pratchett, Brent Weeks, Brandon Sanderson and Michael J Sullivan plus many more.
Just finished the Riyria Revelations series this week - fantastic! Read Rise of Empire and Heir of Novron in 2 days, just couldn't put them down. My house was a complete shambles due to small children left to run riot and I burnt the dinner but I haven't read something that pulled me into another world so completely in a while.
Looking forward to finding more amazing books to read.

My absolute favorite current series/books at the moment are the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. I agree that his style is more simple than many but I am becoming a fan of the simple over the compex and excessively embellished styles. I'm always looking for new sugestions of books and authors!
