message 2301: by Shawn (new)

Shawn (Shawniimush) Hi everyone! I'm Shawn and I am from northern Minnesota. I have enjoyed fantasy genre reading since I was but a wee lad. I think I started reading a greek mythology series by an unknown author when I was 10, and then didn't really begin reading again till I was around 13. Then a friend gave me the Margaret Weis/Tracy Hickman book Dragons of Autumn Twilight and I was hooked.
My Favs were...
Weis & Hickman
JRR Tolkein
Robert Jordan
Michael Moorcock
RA Salvatore
and more currently I have come to enjoy...
Jim Butcher
Terry Goodkind
Ann Rice
Robert E Howard
My absolute favorite current series/books at the moment are the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. I agree that his style is more simple than many but I am becoming a fan of the simple over the compex and excessively embellished styles. I'm always looking for new sugestions of books and authors!

message 2303: by Liberty (new)

Liberty (libertysyarn) I'm Liberty, from Seattle. I'm a blogger/Mom/and tryer of things. ;-) My favorite fantasy authors are Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Harry Potter, and (my hubby). But I won't go into that here. I spend most of my time caring for my kids, taking photos, and creating my own little world. =D

message 2310: by JuanMP (new)

JuanMP Hi! Juan here. Spanish/swedish boy (29 years old can still be considered a "boy"?). I love to read and write. Its my passion. But Im new to fantasy. I havent read enought fantasy books and I was afraid that the Fantasy genre was a little... I dont know, boring? childish? Oh men I was wrong. I began reading Game of thrones and now Elantris and I love it. I really love it. I should read more fantasy books, but the problem is that I dont know much about this genre. A good book recomendations from you doesnt hurt ;)

This is such a wonderful story! I always knew reading was important, but this is a great example of why.

I do worry sometimes about the current trend for gritty realism, with protagonists who are unrepentant thieves, assassins, rapists and the like. Not many honourable role-models there.

Welcome to the group Derrik. Hope you enjoy the discussions.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments Hi Dedalo83...just finding fantasy you have all the classics and "standards" still before you. I sort of envy that in a way. Have you read The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy?

Believe me, we'll all have books to recommend, LOL.

Anachronist Hi, I joined today but I am going to be active after my holiday break. Why I joined? Believe it or not but just because I saw PaulineMRoss posting here. She writes a blog with great reviews (no, it is not advertising, it is truth) so I decided to get to know her a bit closer. And I like fantasy. My first love was Tolkien, some years ago; now I read pretty much everything, constantly looking for something new. :)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments Okay...

Have you (and all my friends know what I'll recommend first, LOL) The Deed of Paksenarrion? This edition says it's volumes 3 through 5 but that's misleading. What they call the first 2 are prequels and don't effect this trilogy (they're not quite as good either, though not bad I suppose). The Paksenarrion trilogy is one of my all time favorites.

I like the Dresden books and liked the first one better than you did. Just for info, a lot of people agree that the books get a lot better around book 3 or 4.

The Green Rider series is good to.

Have you read Roger Zelazny's Amber books?

Just a few. I'll check your book shelves and see if I can get an idea what you like. Feel free to look at mine.

Sophie Hey there! I am a PhD student of anthropology from Denmark and an avid fantasy reader. Fantasy is my escape from the real world - something that has come very much in handy when doing fieldwork in Northern Uganda in the last couple of years... :)

Some of my favourite fantasy authors are: George R.R. Martin, C.s. Lewis, Trudi Carnavan, Phillip Pullman, Neil Gaiman, J.K. Rowling, Patrick Rothfuss and of course J.R.R. Tolkien.

I look forward to becoming inspired by this treasure chest of fantasy goodness!

Salvatore and more. I've always dreamed of being a writer but it takes alot of time, patience and discipline. I've attempted to write a few times but have given up to easily now I have a son so my time is very limited.

Alma (nelaboji) Hi. I am 29 and live in Lithuania. I started reading (actually listening more often :)) fantasy while nursing my newborn son. I found it very good for escaping boring and tiresome reality. Before that, i used to watch fantasy and sci-fi movies.
My favorite authors are J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula Le Guin, George Martin, Susanna Clarke, Brandon Sanderson, Neil Gaiman, Andrzej Sapkowski and Lord Dunsany.
I also read alternate history, historical fiction and magical realism.
P.S. Sorry for my terrible English, I'm still learning.

message 2326: by Fai (new)

Fai Hi All,

I just started getting into reading this year. I'm currently increasing my drawing skills and was looking for a way to pound sci-fi and fantasy info into my brain. I came across an Episode of Feng Zhu's Design Cinema where he recommended Perdido Street Station and thought that it was a good place to start...it was EXCELLENT!

Anyhow, I researched and found PSS belongs to a sub genre called the New Weird, found that book list online, and made a commitment to read the most interesting (to me) on that list. I'll have to admit though, I'm getting pretty tired of "decadent urban fantasy".

For now, after being fully entertained by James Barclay's Dawnthief and Adrian Tchaikovsky's Empire in Black and Gold, I think i'm not interested in the New Weird anymore, and just want to read something fast paced and good, that also brings forth new sci fi / fantasy ideas.

I have stowed away Viriconium for when I run out of books to read. And have also packed away China Mieville's The Scar, only because Perdido Street was so excellent, i found it made subsequent books i read not seem as good. I don't want that to happen again after reading The Scar. I've seen online reviews that sometimes praise The Scar even higher than Perdido Street Station, so I will save it as my secret weapon for when i really run out of books. I did, though, read Mieville's Iron Council since it didn't get as high reviews as the other 2 books.

I look forward to reading the reviews from this groups memebers, thanks for having me here!

message 2331: by Tz (new)

Tz Hi, I'm a college student from westchester, New York. My first experience with fantasy was having the hobbit read to me by my father when I was maybe 7. I read through narnia and LotR. In middle school I truly became an avid fan, first with ender's game and the following books, and then with game of thrones. Since then it's been almost nonstop fantasy reading. My favorite authors are Martin, Rothfuss, Sullivan, Cook, and Abercrombie

Sean (stessmer) I'm new to the group as well. Living in ND, so there isn't much to do besides play video games. Like a lot of people my age (graduated from college about a year ago) I got into fantasy via Harry Potter. After that series, I devoured all of the Shannara books (though I'm a couple of books behind now),Terry Goodkind's series (I made it to Chainfire and couldn't take it anymore), and TA Barron's Merlin books. Now I've been reading The Dresden Files, Weeks' Night Angel Trilogy, and now I'm starting the Iron Druid Chronicles.

message 2339: by Katie (last edited Aug 19, 2012 08:23PM) (new)

Katie (amortentia773) Hi everybody!

I'm Katie, I’m 17 and from Connecticut! I was just scanning through some fantasy book clubs (as I'm a fantasy junkie) and as soon as I saw you guys were reading Elantris by Brandon Sanderson, I just had to join! He's one of my favorite authors, and I absolutely love this book!

I first got hooked on fantasy when I was very little and the Harry Potter books first came out, but soon after fell in love with J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit, followed by Lord of the Rings ; I was so in love with the depth of the worlds that he had created, I just couldn’t get over it.

While my favorite fantasy genre has to be high fantasy (I’m a sucker for epics and the amount of detail that usually goes into those worlds) I read anything I can get my hands on from dragons to wizards to vampires; I’m not too picky and I love to explore.

My favorite authors include JK Rowling, J.R.R Tolkien, Brandon Sanderson, G.R.R. Martin, Robert Jordan, and Alison Croggan (though I feel like I’m forgetting someone), and my favorite series are Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire, Wheel of Time, Mistborn Trilogy, Books of Pellinor and Lord of the Rings.

Anyway, it’s great to be here and I’m so glad to have an excuse to re-read Elantris!

Jed (lughead) Hiya, I'm Jed, mid-30s, and living on the west coast of the united states. I'm a life-long fantasy reader, starting with D&D books (Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance), then quickly moving into Tolkien and haven't stopped in the past 25 years... pretty much.

I'm not really interested in much young adult fiction right now, but I did recently read and enjoy The Hunger Games. In that vein, I'm searching out post-apocalyptic futures, though not necessarily dystopian (in which there is an extreme class difference). I thought this group might be a good place to find interesting points of view.

I'm not very much into arguing the admirable characteristics of any authors -- people like what they like and that's about all there is to say about that. One person's trash is another's treasure, and so on.

Joined a few days go. Am fairly new to reading fantasy, mostly I've read Pratchett, Gaiman, Rowling, Fforde, Tolkein and some Goodkind.

Currently reading Fforde's latest 'The Woman Who Died a Lot' and next up is A Song of Fire and Ice: Game of Thrones and, since joining, His Majesty's Dragon.

after ASOIAF, the next thing I would recommend, if you like really challenging reads, is Malazan book of the fallen by Steven Erikson, and the Malazan novels by I.C. Esslemont... Forge of Darkness by Erikson should also be good, although havent gotten to that one yet :) :P

Have you read his Dragonslayer books yet? Well worth a look if not. They're some of the best children's books I've read in a long while.

message 2350: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Hello!
I stumbled across goodreads only last week and found this group today.

I'm a stay-at-home mum to 3 young children, I'm from Belfast in Northern Ireland and I feel very guilty everytime I buy a book since I'm spending my husbands money :D

I have a serious book addiction which I blame on my aunt who introduced me to David Eddings Belgariad series at the age of 8. I have memories of lurking in the adult sci-fi/fantasy section of my local library when I was 9 or 10 and getting very odd looks from the adults who were there!

Favourite authors include Anne & Todd McCaffrey, David Eddings, Terry Pratchett, Brent Weeks, Brandon Sanderson and Michael J Sullivan plus many more.

Just finished the Riyria Revelations series this week - fantastic! Read Rise of Empire and Heir of Novron in 2 days, just couldn't put them down. My house was a complete shambles due to small children left to run riot and I burnt the dinner but I haven't read something that pulled me into another world so completely in a while.

Looking forward to finding more amazing books to read.
Debs
