Hi Nissa, Zackery and welcome. Lots geeks or possibly nerds here. I've never settled on whether I'm a geek or a nerd, I always thought I was a nerd..."
I could be geek or nerd, people decided! :DDD

I'm Nicole and I'm from a little town near Melbourne, Australia. I've always read fantasy novels over most other genres. Since I grew up in a regional town, the most books they had at the library were the classic fantasy (Tolkien/Eddings) and Australian authors: Ian Irvine, Isobelle Carmody, Kate Forsyth, Garth Nix and Alison Croggon. I still love all these guys and get all their new books when I can. Since I've joined the site and the group I've found so many new books to read I have to stop myself clicking on all the recommendations.... but you know, curiosity always wins out.
New friends are welcomed, since I'm fairly new on the site as well and looking forward to having a look at next months read (since I have already read Graceling before).

sigh

Hi Jim
yes I agree the ipad is great for finding books and reading on. I've always passed my books onto my family as my cousins read fantasy / sci fi as well , so they are a bit sad now,lol !!
I've found so many indie authors to read and really out of the 40 or so books i've read since christmas only 1 or 2 had really bad editing & or storyline issues, and money wise you can almost get 3 or 4 for the price of 1 paperback, it's hard to pass on really.
Hope your still enjoying the ipad cheers sharon

Some of my favorite fantasy/fiction authors are Robin Hobb, Lynn Flewelling, Roger Zelazny, Tamora Pierce, John Green, JK Rowling, Scott Lynch, and a great deal more. I'm always looking for new books in the fantasy genre. Glad to be here! :)

For years, when asked (which was seldom) I said that John Crowley's Little Big was my favorite book and that Tim Powers was the author whose books I most anticipated. I'm not sure the first is true anymore--I don't think I have one truly favorite book--but the second still is. I find Christopher Moore hilarious and Terry Pratchett considerably less so. I have opinions about everything and much to the dismay of my family, I'm happy to share them.
I look forward to reading and posting in this forum and I look forward to meeting you all.

Hi Charlie, great post...you sound most interesting! Welcome to the group.

But I have enjoyed all other sorts of fantasy literature, particularly in series - I have liked all the books in the Song of Ice and Fire yes, ALL, even the last ones.
I have recently read Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and The Night Circus. Both great, but I think I enjoyed the former more, despite the delightful writing in The Night Circus.
I just started The Wheel of Time, after resisting the temptation for a long time... half-way through the first book, I am loving it. I hear the series loses steam down the road, but I will enjoy the ride while it lasts.

I'm an avid fantasy reader & writer. I signed my first contract last week for an anthology. Check out my stories. Let's connect!

I have always been a big fantasy fan (tho' you wouldn't guess from my TBR list at the moment :S). I've just started reading Game Of Thrones and am really loving it, just wish I could sit at work and read it instead of having to actually do work ;) At some point this year I am going to reread The Name Of The Wind as I kept getting distracted 1st tiem round so didn't take it all in :(

I have been reading fantasy since I was a kid, and have read literally thousands. My favorites include early Wolfe, Whittemore, Zelazny, Kay,G.R.R. Martin, Mièville, Constantine and lately some new indie authors which include D. T. Conklin, D.P. Prior and Scott Rhine. These are 5 star boys and they need to be noticed. Glad I could join the group.

My name is Kris. After lurking here for a while i finally gathered the courage to post something.
I joined because i like to have a group of people with similar views so we can feed each others passion:) And to find ideas for new reads.
I like epic and dark fantasy,(also like horror). Typical books that i adore are not easy reads. Off course there are some
exceptions and every now and then i read a trashy book.
I'm a fairly new reader, so i don't have a endless list of books that i love. Really love Brent's Night Angel trilogy, Ravenloft books, Vampire chronicles...

I joined this group because I have a true passion for reading fantasy books. Recently I read "Snow White, Blood Red" and enjoyed it very much. I also enjoy fantasy reads from J.R.R. Tolkien and Brian Froud. My all time favorite book is "Photographing Fairies" by Steven G. Szilagyi.
I enjoy dark fantasy books entwined with horror and a psychological twist. Things that would be eerie and uncomfortable for most people are what I enjoy reading the most. The more frightening the better. I typically do not enjoy quick or easy reads, however they are always appreciated it I do happen to pick one up.

Got to be honest, I never thought I'd join a group like this. As a kid, though I loved to read, I hated fantasy. Now, well, not only is it what I like to read the most, it's also what I write. There's a story to that, but it's long and most of you would find it boring.
Anyway, I'm a middle school teacher, author, and lover of great books and quit beaches. I look forward to getting some great advice and excellent recommendations here!

Welcome, Lauren. I'd love to read your story. How people come to fantasy is never boring. If you are shy to talk about it to everyone, we can become friends and you can send me a personal message with your story.

Oh, I'm not shy, just long-winded. The short version is when I was an education major I thought if I were going to be a "good" teacher I had to read what the kids were reading, which was Harry Potter. I soon became obsessed and it was only a matter of time before I began reading more adult fantasy/paranormal romance. Finally, two years ago, I put aside the realistic fiction novel I was writing and put all that fantasy reading to good use: I wrote my own!
Thanks for asking for the details!

I am a fantasy author, and I found this page while exploring the Goodreads website. It is certainly a pleasure to meet fellow readers and writers with a similar penchant.
As far as my favorite fantasy authors, I quite enjoy Tad Williams, David Eddings, Terry Brooks, and JRR Tolkien. But I am open to nearly every genre.
Glad to be here!
Rachel~

I'm Kim and live in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada, happily married with 2 children at home and 2 older kids with homes and families of their own.
My love for real fantasy really started about a year ago when I picked up the first of GRRM's Ice and Fire series! Love at first read and within a couple of months finished that series them moved onto the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind which I loved too although not quite as much as GRRM :-). I am now reading Patrick Rothfuss Kingkiller chronicle (read the first and just started the second) and love this author too. I think next on my list is either Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn?) or Robin Hobb (Farseer?).
I am happy to find this group and look forward to joining in on the discussions, figuring out who to read next and making new friends!

Cheers, Rachel... Excellent to see another fantasy author around here. Within which sub-genres do you tend to stray?

While I don't often poke my head into this thread (we have a couple of members who are very good at making folks feel welcome) it has come to my notice that we have many new members who write fantasy as well as read it. While you are all welcome, I'd like to remind you that it's the policy of this group that authors keep their comments about writing to the folders specified for them.

This is, after all, a group for readers, not for writers. There are many groups on Goodreads specifically for Authors and I would encourage you to look for them to discuss your writing.
Thanks. And once again, welcome.

you MUST read FARSEER! Great series...then read Codex Alera, That series gets better and better with each book!

My name is György. I was born, raised and still live in Germany. A programmer by day I split my nights between my wife, online role playing and reading or should i rather say devouring books. I think my addiction to mystery and fantasy started with the greek sagas and other ancient mythologies. My current favorites are books by Kevin Hearne, Simon R. Green, Jim Butcher, Patricia Briggs, Trudy Canavan and lots of others. When I die I want to be reborn either as Oberon (Atticus' dog) or being trapped in my skull like Bob. And maybe joining this group and getting to know other authors will give me other choices.

I'm Linda, an avid fantasy reader. I'm a college lecturer in childcare and have two bookcases groaning under the weight of all my books, but they are now both heaving sighs of relief since I bought my Kindle.
Nice to meet you all...

I'm Conrad, a Canadian who lives and works in Japan. I work at the local uni as a lecturer. When school is out I do freelance translation J<>E and some graphic design work.
I am a voracious reader of fantasy and dip occasionally into SF. And have been since high school. Sadly most of my books are still on the parent's farm as I can't easily bring them over.
Currently I am enjoying the Black Library's catalogue and their grim outlook on reality. I also enjoy Glen Cook, J.V Jones, Mark Lawrence, Stan Nicholls, Karen Miller,Michael Moorcock, kevin Hearne, Joe Ambercrombie, Andrzej Sapkowski, Steven Burst, James Barclay, David Dalglish, Brent Weeks, Karl Edward Wagner, Markus Heitz and a couple dozen more.
After reading I enjoy practicing Naginata, both old and new styles.
A close third is traveling around on my Kawasaki.
In the near future I would like to start a magazine devoted to Fantasy like Asimov's Science Fiction. If it's allowed I'd like to ask the readers here their opinion on this idea once I've got things sorted out.
Anyway, that's about it for me. Looking forward to reading along with everyone.
Thanks for reading and have a great week.
Sincerely,
Conrad

Hayley - The Name of the Wind KICKS butt! Awesome read - my fav so far this year.
Melinda - thanks for listing those '5 star boys'. I'm definitely going to check them out!
Kris43 - HUGE fan of Brent Weeks, too!
Kim - Rothfuss & Goodkind!!! Woo Hoo! (Goodkind is by far my all-time fav.)
To everyone else - thanks for the warm welcome. I'd have stopped back in sooner, but I'm NOT getting notifications from this group...?
Anyhoo, I'm a fantasy writer & reader. Terry Goodkind, Robert Jordan, Brent Weeks are probably my top 3 favs. I'm always wanting to know which books others love - I'm willing to read just about any sub-genre of fantasy as long as I'm transported out of this world & into another.
